That McGuire fella is a big unit, great clear out at the end that Soroka celebrated. Frawley just isn't a 10. Cooney looks lively.

Agree re Frawley. Thought Osbourne was good first half poor second and thought McGrath had a decent game.
Haven’t seen much of Cooney before, looks quick and a decent prospect.

Agreed with that one, and he almost regathered, but as Schmidt would say "good players catch those". he also had at least 3 other soft enough ones.

Well; that was a tough game to watch for the eyeballs pov.

I thought that last minute penalty given to Ospreys would have sealed a win for them. However the mess of their penalty given to them from the ref in the dying seconds cost them the match in the end.

I'm so relieved that Leinster won by 3 pts though. But it's a lucky victory for them that feels less deserved than previously thought. If Leinster had continued to have issues with keeping control of their passing from throughout the game if the last minute penalty went to a lineout & eventual possible try & conversion for Ospreys at the death; it would have been curtains for Leinster in maintaining their own winning streak in this tournament.

And I'm not denying that there were some great scores from key players in the match. The passing of the ball between the Leinster players didn't feel like they had the belief from me to win it. They felt sloppy & derivative at key points throughout the whole game when there wasn't enough cohesion at times from within the squad. I thought Leinster were going to throw the game away from them as soon that gave away the penalty to Ospreys at the final few seconds of the match. I'm glad Leinster didn't do that though which makes me glad they got the win.

Glad the winning streak continues but that was a drudge to watch. The atmosphere in the stadium seemed as dreary as this evenings weather here for the most part. The handling errors were atrocious. Didn’t feel like Leinster had any consistent sense of leadership and their sense of cohesion was way below par.

Yep, March 2021, back in the covid days, Osprays brought an end Leinster’s 10 match winning streak. Started Nov 2019 with a win against Benetton.

    Some positives:

Boyle was pretty dominant in the scrum. Both the O’Briens did well with limited ball. Tector looking the part at 12.

    Some negatives:

Frawley, Deegan, all of our decision making

More positives, younger quota, Boyle, Gunne, Cooney, Culhane , Tector looked mighty impressive

I never thought Leinster's scrum would become so dominant. Porter has always been targeted as a scrummager that could give away penalties, but he has been rock solid for Ireland and Leinster this season. The addition of Slimani is obviously one factor to our improved scrummaging, but Jack Boyle and Tom Clarkson have quickly become very capable in their own right.

Boyle was winning scrum penalties for fun last night and Clarkson is holding his side steady for Ireland in the Six Nations. Paddy McCarthy and Rory McGuire looked solid too and they're not as experienced as the others yet either.

It's not solely down to the props either. Mangan and Deeny are just as important to making that scrum look powerful. Same with Ryan, McCarthy and Snyman.

Sharks beating the Bulls by 10 points with 10 minutes remaining. Would be a huge result for Leinster if they win.

SHarks 29-17 ahead v bulls now. Last few minutes. Big boost for Leinster.

29-12 now, not even a LBP....

They must have scored as I posted that..29-19..

Would like to see Frawley at 12 with Osborne at 13. They've both played well together in the past. He just isn't a 10, and it's doing him a mischief to keep putting him there. Getting the Paddy Wallace run around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,972 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

    Sharks win 19-29.

Leinster are 17 points ahead ahead of the Bulls in third place, albeit they have a game in hand. If we beat Cardiff in two weeks time there's no way Bulls can overtake us even if we lose both games on the South Africa tour.

Big result for Leinster, gives us a lot more leeway in South Africa alright. I still hope they take the tour more seriously than they have done in the past, but we can actually afford to get zero from it now.

Deegan has been named captain for Ireland A. Harry Byrne is in the squad too. It's probably the end of the road for him at Leinster but he's good enough to play for a province if he wants to.

Really hope Tommy O'Brien doesn't pick up an injury before this one. He's good enough to get into the senior squad if he remains fit.

Diarmuid Mangan named in the Ireland senior squad is a big surprise. He's played well this season as a lock/blindside hybrid and has taken part in bigger games than I'd expected him to. Was really good against Connacht before Christmas.

I guess he's in there as a training panelist so the coaches can get a better look at him. Hopefully he impresses.

There is 69 players selected across two teams for this week.

    Henderson is injured
Mccarthy is just back from injury

They need bodies to train, to do lineout and scrum practice. With Doris out Conan is likely to start at 8 so Baird is possibly backrow cover on the bench

So they need 4 fit locks

Seems much more like this yeah.

Good for Mangan as it can only be a good thing for him.

But if they were naming "development players" like they did at the start of the campaign I imagine the asterisk would be beside his name.

Wasn't in contention for the A panel and the seniors needed bodies for training.

Which is a stupidly large number of players. Seems a bizarre scattergun approach this week really after a fairly tight squad for the first 2 games.

More noticeable who isn't there such as Connors.

It’s roughly 43% of all Irish eligible players called into either the A or full squad. I think a bunch of the lads in the full squad are in there just to hold the tackle bags as I’m guessing some of the players in the full squad will play in the A game.

A number of people saying that Frawley isn't a 10. If he isn't a 10 what is he? Full Back? Centre?

HHe's Probably in the role of utility back now. 10/12/15. But not preferred choice at any of those positions. Handy to have around because he can do the job but never the first choice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,018 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

Leisnter officially classify him as a fly half and a full back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,065 ✭✭✭arsebiscuits1

He has a versatile enough skillset and a large enough body of work for people to make a valid case based on evidence they choose to weight more over others.

Personally I think his best position is 12. I think J Barrett is a person Frawley should be looking to copy. Yes he gives up a few kgs and a few cms on Barrett.

But Barrett has made a remarkably successful career out of being versatile but doing his primary job well enough that the versatility on the pitch is icing on the cake rather than sacrificing core aspects of the role to get those versatile elements (goal kicking, fielding the ball, play making etc)

Given his 6'3" frame I don't see any reason he can't and wont get to ~98-100kgs. Henshaw is a similar height and has been carrying in and around that the majority of his career.

Frawley is more physical than he is given credit for, but lacks the physicality to be a top, top level 12 at present.

If he nails down the fundamentals of a 12, then the ball handling skills, the kicking game, the distributing vision all add to it and make him a serious contender there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 712 ✭✭✭jonok28

I agree with everything you said but Frawley knows the big bucks are to be made at fly half and having tasted success against the Springboks and for a split second being considered a viable starting option at fly half for Ireland, I struggle to see him being satisfied with playing the utility role unless Leinster make it very clear that he is a massive part of their future and will get ample minutes at 10. Otherwise Ulster could use him, Connacht could use him and Munster would love to have him back up Crowley.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,065 ✭✭✭arsebiscuits1

I don't suggest he plays the utility role though.

I suggest he nails down the 12 role and the versatility that he brings adds to it.

Barrett spent the first few years of his career flitting around the backline until he found his groove at 12. Frawley is only 7 months younger than him amazingly but I think there is scope there.

His biggest issue with this plan comes in the shape of Jamie Osborne who offers a lot of what Frawley does but bags more physicality.

he’s just off form which drives a narrative , likely due to repeated questionable performances and the loss of confidence that goes with that. But every player goes through that, Crowley just out of a bout which has cost him, but these events are ones which can be used as a springboard to reach the next level. Sexton and all the greats, O’Driscoll & O’Connell included, have spoken of these period. What defines and distinguishes the exceptional from the great is how they react to it . Let us see time will reveal all.
