Remember 93-94 lads nearly getting into fisty cuffs at mart rings, didn't end well.

Make the most of it while the sun shines, it is great to see and it should be like this normally.

Of the people who buy on line here. What's the best option. Phone,T.V , iPad or laptop.

I find the iPad the hardest to see clearly. I usually use my phone odd time the laptop.

I watched Elphin today for a half hour while I was having some grub before work, the bullocks looked to be a phenomenal trade at least the one's I watched. There's always some super cattle about it but the general run of store bullocks from 500-600kg seemed to be north of €4kg and €4.30-50kg was common place. Up to €5kg for a super looking bullock 530kg @ €2660.

I only watched 1 heavy bullock selling, 780kg @ €3300. I'm not a beef man but surely that's well above factory price even taking off €50 for mart commission. Some very rough calculations on my part leaves him at over €7kg dead weight even allowing for 60% kill out.

The issue now is factories have instructed their feedlots and contractor feedlots to buy everything in sight and they will see they don't loose out in a few months. Johnny farmer has no business bidding against this crew. The theory will be hold up the kill in May to kill these and drop the price to Johnny. Thing is there's a good chance it will backfire because there's a shortage in the UK and Europe.

Yup and they have been far better in the Marts than what the Factories are paying since xmas… especially good contenintal cattle.

Phone here always. Internet is poor so always just the phone. It’s not ideal as it’s so small but has to do.

I’ve at least 10 steers between 570 to 630kgs what’s the best option hold and kill in June or hit the mart in the next three weeks.

Crystal Ball question, not much of an answer. It's impossible to predict.

The practical answer is striking when the irons hot.

Always great stock in Elphin. That bullock was a suckler bred Angus from a CHX dam, probably an R+ or better. There’s €7/kg available from the factory for that kind of animal so at 60% KO from mart weight, which that type of animal would easily do, he made his factory price or maybe €20-€40 above it. I saw 2 come in together, a Simmental and a CHX, 970kgs, €4,000, serious animals.

I watched Mohill yesterday massive monaghan day heifer sale great quality cattle and excellent prices

I only watched the 1 beef bullock go through and the rest of that seller's cattle were all around the 500-600kg mark. Perhaps there's €7 available for certain types of stock but I struggle to see how it would be got for a 1 off beast like the above case.

All of this should be prefaced with the information that I come from a suckler/store background and don't finish cattle although it's something I'm getting more interested in. For someone with small number's I think the likes of yesterday's trade would be atleast comparable if not ahead of what they'd get in the factory. Granted you've to factor in mart commission and converting mart live weight into the equivalent dead weight.

Have a bunch going to the mart next Week, there are 2aax heifers, 340kgs, looking well apart from a right dose of ringworm, which is now healing up but a a lot of grey to be seen, good condition bar that and a sheen on the coat

Would it come against them much in the mart, twould be a pain in the hole taking another morning off to send those 2 in a few weeks time, tempting to let them off with the rest as long as it wouldn't knock the price too much.

probably less of an issue now then in a couple of months time when farmers are more active around the ring. Feed lot lads wouldn’t care

Anyone here with good lsl auction access.

Lot 153 & lot 303 in gortatlea today

Fr but v handy money for them

Older Fr cows were making 2 - 2.2/kg

    153 was incalf.

    303 was very lame

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 21,167 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

Both were lame 303 more obviously as she was walking fairlyok with the limp, both were not in calf according to the mart report detail. 153 was skin and bone and was very dirty behind and hardly able to move, she loked like she could collapse before she gets in the trailer. Either very bad fluke or if a few years ago I would've taught BVD possibly. Could be.Johnes Disease

Unusual that either were kept.if not in calf. 303 may have calved and dried up

Sorry u wer right. John's disease definitely. I must have looked up the wrong one first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 21,167 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

Happens partly guessed you looked at one wrong cow. On 303 a second cow was on the video while the bidding finished and she was incalf. A young black Fr cow
