I just use the map. With location on, it's no issue finding the charger and tapping on it. You can dry run this yourself at home. Except don't swipe to start the charge. 🤣

Make sure you are logged into the app and you have credit. In case of issues telephone ESB ecars helpline phone number. You should ring this anyway and order a new card and disable the old one. The cards seem more reliable than the app and the two link together and you can see the time you have been charging in the app etc.

no options to charge at all now in Dublin Port: should be fines for this sort of carry on.

But, but app says all green, powered on ready to go. I suspect ESB ecars will be kicked out of the site shortly and whole petrol station was closed for presumably big power changes.

The notification was The ESB EV Chargers will be out of use from 9am Thursday 16th January to 10am 27th January, so unless picture was taken after 10am today they may be back available.

I actually saw those signs on the way into the port saying the whole station would be closed for a period. Assumed they were doing a very quick renovation but then the store isn’t that old in terms of fit out so maybe it was to put in a sub station or something for their own chargers. I’ll take another look at the weekend!

the Merc PHEV is plugged into the AC.

The Leaf is parked in the middle space but (rightfully) using the cheaper 50kW unit that the Merc PHEV is also using.

The BZ4X is lucky that the regular spaces next to the last charging space are free so they can park perpendicular to the charger.

Anyone navigating to this site will see on the app that 1 side of the 150kW unit (CCS/CHAdeMO) is available to use… they’d then arrive to this sh1tshow…

This site is only about a year old…

ESB eCars in a nutshell folks…

Similar thing happened to me in Kinnegad where the chargers were in use on their RHS as you face them. Luckily parking space next to the 1st one was free allowing me to parallel park to the kerb and use it. If you could drive in front in on the LHS of the charger and keep going past the kerb some distance then the cable could reach.

Sligo, chargers in place, not yet powered on

This is positive and I expect it will be a very busy location once live - it's badly needed on the N4 between Carrick on Shannon and Donegal town (110km drive). Services are already well established - before I ever drove an EV I would have routinely stopped there for a break.

The 50kW ESB unit in Union place in Sligo town is currently treated like an oasis in the desert by some along this N4 route where there are queues at the weekend. Sligo Junction should take some pressure off it.

Another option is Applegreen in Carraroe although it isn't live just yet.

The N4 is included in the latest ZEVI grant scheme so expect a big improvement in charging facilities by year end.

Union Place is really high demand. When in Sligo, I go early morning if I'm up. You'd be lucky to get it free any other time.

I live close to Sligo and you're right- anyone travelling through up to Donegal has had very limited options up to now. An acquaintance handed back his MG4 as he found it too difficult to travel from South Sligo to his work in Letterkenny on 4 days a week. Things improved a bit en route since with the new chargers installed in Donegal Town- could do with a lot more chargers in fairness for the NW. Also on Sligo there are 2 Weev chargers on Connaughton Road close to the centre - don't know what the deal is on how they operate.

You can use a debit card on them, but I think they put a €60 charge on it and then credit back what you don't use of that later. Or you can use the MyWeev app and PAYG afaik.

These SuperValu "hubs" are shít shows

Kimmage this morning. A leaf driver blocking 2 spaces and can't get her car to charge. Numerous EV's going round in circles because they are waiting to charge.

Another leaf driver comes in and parks near the charger with their hazard lights on and blocks half the car park.

A Kia parked in the CCS spot but with a cable running from the AC charger so that's another space blocked.

A few taxis pulled in and then drove off.

    It's not getting any better.

It's about balance, Ecars need to balance out the decent sites with awful ones otherwise everyone would expect good chargers all the time

This is the national strategy - community DC hubs instead of a proliferation of AC charge points. I’m not a fan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,305 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

I'd be interested in finding out how and why people use these chargers. I only use one rarely when travelling out of range of a home charger.

I'm assuming few people are on a long trip and pushing kimmage. So are these people without home chargers, or just a lot of people needing a faster charge than home charging.

As for taxis not sure what the long term plan is for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,182 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

they could be apartment dwellers, and public charging might be their only option.

Really doesn't help with the poor layout of them. 3 spaces for a potential of 4 charging.

2 on the dual Dc head one and a single AC and DC on the other.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,305 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

I can't see there being that many with EVs with no home charging local to it that its that busy still the time. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm just curious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,305 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

I used to think what's the point of an AC charger on a DC hub.

But I saw a video where someone in France wanted to charge overnight to 100% and the AC was a lot cheaper. But still makes no sense to block a DC charger with a AC charger. On the French side there were about 10-12 chargers. Not 2 DC like this one.

Back in the day then chargers had 3 cables and one was AC but capable of 43kW and typically some old Renault ZoE could only fast charge using these tethered cables. Over time ESB ecars dropped this third cable and newer ZOEs have CCS. They seemed to keep the 22kW max AC socket so at least older Zoe's and odd cars with no CCS and Chademo, such as some vans could at least get 7/22kW and not be stranded. After a time they dropped this option too, because as you say it causes more problems than it fixes. If they want AC they should place separate units away from the main chargers but they may be limited to a certain number of parking spaces and even AC units on a pillar of commercial grade are relatively expensive and may never pay for themselves. ESB ecars say public AC only chargers are not viable and they don't intend installing more. Easygo said similar and they have some on street in Ennis and other places. One of the reasons for high costs is ESB networks insists on an electricity meter for each pillar on a public street, so if you have 4 units on one side of a street you need 4 ESB Meters with 4 standing charges. On private land you can share the meters and you can run the cabling between pillars yourself so in the likes of pavilions shopping centre in Swords ESB ecars installed a good few AC units as the costs to them are far less. Unfortunately they put them near the doors so they are ICEd a lot of the time.

AC for the likes of some of the Zoe drivers that all they have is ac

But! Not just put on as an after thought. Defensive design should come into play, because people are *****

Right now there's 3 spaces for a possiblity of 4 charging, that's almost inviting problems.

They removed the AC at the blancherstown one.

the units are each sorta straddling 2 spaces with the one in the middle almost "shared". Move the 50 kW over one and have 2 dedicated spots for each of them.

An even more defensive design would remove the AC altogether and put an AC elsewhere, or even just a few spaces down. So there's an AC section and a DC section.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,305 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

I thought the plan is not never install AC but only come back to it after they have more DC hubs installed.

I do get the demand for AC for people without chargers. I know I was in Tralee recently and there were very few public AC chargers and I wanted to leave it go to 100% overnight. Instead ended up charging to 85 on a DC charger.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,941 ✭✭✭10-10-20

AC could be in an area where overnight park-and-charge is available, well away from the DC chargers. The parking spots could be used by fossil-fueled vehicles for shopping visits as normal during the daytime.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,435 ✭✭✭markpb

I thought you could share an ESBN meter but only if the local authority installed the cabling under the public footpath or land?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,305 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

I think there's enough ICE parking in charging spot without having a confused tile like that. Also done might charge during work or such..

here’s the same pic I posted on the previous page.

This is an ESB eCars hub, but 1 of the 3 spaces is occupied by a PHEV, and they can be there for up to 10 hours if they so choose.

    IMG_4981.jpeg

this site is barely a year old.

This is everything that’s wrong with their rollout.
