Those modular homes have started being placed inside that kip of a place, wonder what the atmosphere is like seeing trucks and trucks entering that site assembling it all.

Outnof imterest what's the best place to get a steak sandwich preferably pr a steak in Clonmel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 272 ✭✭Lightscribe

Driver's Irishtown do a couple of different steaks and a steak sandwich special from time to time.

Central House would do an excellent steak also if you fancy something a bit fancier.

I recently walked around Clonmel, I couldn't get over the all the closed premises. As a youngster I spent so much time in Gamestop but look at that area now, it's a sad state of affairs. Where has the investment gone? This is probably why they're building the modular homes to get more footfall…….. At least the government/local council has their priorities straight…

At least the government/local council has their priorities straight…

Ha ha . Tongue firmly place in cheek there 🤣🤣.

As if the that will increase football.

However I do agree with you regarding vast amount of shops closed up.

But without turning back the clock and what in truth could be done.

Dropping the rates would help, but I'm not sure by how much.

The biggest change since your time walking around GameStop etc, is on line shopping. It's very hard for most smaller shops to compete with online stores buying power.

…on the other hand there seems to be a boom in nail and beauty parlours, every second shop seems to full of women (never seen men, maybe they are there as well) getting their nails done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,904 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Nails, phone shops, dog grooming and Thai massage. And they say the country is broke 🤔.

All that disposable income has to go some where

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,035 ✭✭✭BlueSkyDreams

A larger population is likely to increase footfall. A smaller population is likely to decrease footfall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,904 ✭✭✭Ceepo

There certainly is that , however what will the disposable income of the people in the modular home be?

The towns disposable income will be higher than it was without the modular homes.

The new residents will still pay for and use local services, which will help local businesses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,904 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Do you think it create the opportunity for new shops to open.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,035 ✭✭✭BlueSkyDreams

It can do, yes. More footfall generally leads to more spend.

The modular homes could also become more common and a solution to drive house completions upwards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,904 ✭✭✭Ceepo

I like your optimism, however I don't share it.

If indeed the residents are as many would have you believe, IPA then while they're maybe more people walking around and increasing footfall, their spending power will be very limited.

To your second point. Wil modular homes become more common. Id imagine that it's possible, and would help temporarily. However at an AVG cost of 440k for approx 600 sq, I'm not sure it actually makes financial sense to continue building them

The recent report from the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) has revealed that the average cost of delivering each modular home has soared to an astonishing €442,000—more than double the original estimate of €200,000 per unit.

Of course it is argued that they can be produced quicker, again the devil is in the detail of that, while they may be produced quicker in the factory, there's always the ground work including roads, lighting and sewer works that have to take place too.

Vape shops and American sweet shops are the sure sign of disposable income. (Sarcasm)

the modular homes has nothing to do with the town centre so let’s get rid of that whataboutery straight away. Games stop closed their entire UK and Irish operations some years ago. Shame to see the shop being unused but as someone mentioned on line shopping is killing a lot of local businesses and shops.

We have also had zero success in promoting the town and have been ignored by government primarily because of the lack of a decent TD representing the town. Hopefully having 3 TDs in the Dail from the area might help although we’ve had 2 of them there exactly at the time the town has needed them most.

It looks like Mattie McGrath had the chance to negotiate things for Clonmel and Tipperary in return for his support of the government. But instead he has asked for his daughter Mairin to be given one of the Taoiseach's senate nominations and one his other children getting to keep Mairin's council seat. Worth about €110k a year or €550k over the term of the Dail to the McGrath family. And that's before expenses.

Now we know where his priorities lie.

what’s the source for this touts? Absolute complete and utter disgrace if it’s true.

    Wasn't she nominated by Comhaltas?

The young councillor has been nominated by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann to contest the five-seat Cultural & Education Vocational Panel contest. She is an Irish set and Sean Nós dancer as well as PRO and Youth Officer for Tipperary Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann.

Do you think the above information is incorrect and have you some supported information to confirm your statement ?

Mairin ran for the Seanad but was eliminated in the count on Friday.

I was told about the deal to put her into the Seanad via the Taoiseach's nominations on Friday by a close associate of Mattie who lives in Newcastle. Mattie told his supporters that Mairin is getting a Taoiseach's nomination. That deal seems to be filtering into the media now as we saw in the Mail on Sunday article and also rumours are circulating among political correspondents etc on social media tonight. Basically there are enough sources now reporting it to be able to say there is something to it.

    You have stated the above,

Do you believe that it's a case that this was the ONLY negotiation or do you think it was only PART of the negotiations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,667 ✭✭✭touts

You seem to be a strong supporter of his. Why don't you tell us what he has gotten for the people of South Tipperary in this deal with the government because the only thing being reported and talked about is the deal for his family.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,904 ✭✭✭Ceepo

On the contrary, I'm not a supporter at all, so I've know idea of any deal, apart from what you mentioned.

How about answering the questions! Or at least give your opinion on it.

"Do you believe that it's a case that this was the ONLY negotiation or do you think it was only PART of the negotiations."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,667 ✭✭✭touts

The only thing I know about is what has been reported online and in the media and that is the deal for the McGrath family. If there are things in there for the rest of the people of South Tipperary maybe they will come to light over time but at the moment there doesn't seem to be anything. You are extremely supportive of Mattie so we only have your word for the claim that you aren't part of his team. So again I ask that if you know anything please report it and if you can't defend what is being reported don't attack other posters for questioning a deal that looks very very iffy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,904 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Why so defensive, no poster is being attacked. You made a statement, I ask you for a link or something evidence of that, as I hadn't heard anything about it. I also ask you if you were aware if it was the only negotiation or if there was more. I actually thought seen as you were in contact with a "close associate of Mattie" you may have some information.

Me asking question of you doesn't make me "extremely supportive" or "part of his team"

    That's just absurd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,707 ✭✭✭Nollog

Im just reading and not involved but your message tone did seem accusatory. Police your own tone maybe.

I, of course mean this with all respect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 170 ✭✭Deminiman

I heard recently that the price increase on the homes was mostly down to the increase in security for the site, and a number of acres nearby was bought and gifted to the neighbours who keep horses. Also compensation was given to these same neighbours.

    Accusatory? Of what exactly..

I believe it was me how was accused of "bring part of his team"

It certainly wasn't my intention to accuse anyone of anything

The OP post a statement and I'll quote it

"It looks like Mattie McGrath had the chance to negotiate things for Clonmel and Tipperary in return for his support of the government. But instead he has asked for his daughter Mairin to be given one of the Taoiseach's senate nominations and one his other children getting to keep Mairin's council seat..I

And as another poster said its a disgrace if true.

I'm sure we all know, sometimes unfounded statements can be made online.

Now as the OP made the statement, I don't think it's out of order to ask them for some supportive information about their claim.

Now of course this doesn't mean that their statement isn't true, it may well be.

So much for Mattie and his supporters spreading the news that Mairin would be a Taoiseachs nominee.

He may have asked, but was probably told to F**k off. Bear in mind that he has been one of Michael Martin's biggest critics in the Dail.

His influence isn't as great as he would lead you to believe.
