My landline broadband (Eir) is dropping out and coming back every minute or so. PITA. It's reliable but slow normally, 1 Mbps download, 0.3 upload so copper, not fibre. Would storm damage affect copper and fibre differently?.

If there is significant damage in the area I shudder to think how long Eir infrastructure division will be fixing it. They're not the ESB.

DSL can be affected badly by water ingress, which storm conditions could have forced in to cables/a junction box.

Yes it was and it's included in the normal storm comparison table that I do showing storms back to 2011. Link to that post here.

That other table was just an extra one I did as Éowyn was not like other storms since 2011 in recent times which have nearly all been historically irrelevant aside from some locally and Darwin/Ophelia.

hi, what kind of a power bank did you use for this?

It's just plain wrong. Average temperature may be increasing. Average rainfall may be increasing. Wind and storms are not.

I did a post showing the number of calendar days per year where a wind gust of at least 100 km/h occurred at both Malin Head and Dublin Airport in the Irish Weather Statistics thread recently via this link here. There is a very clear decrease. The years 2010 and 2021 were exceptionally calm in particular nationally. Even the windiest years of recent times have not been close to the peak during the previous cold Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation phase through the 80s into the 90s. It's known that our storms are a little different to the likes of hurricanes and tropical cyclones. Ours are called extratropical cyclones and are formed by a steep temperature gradient so a colder North Atlantic will be more conducive to cyclogenesis than an overall warmer one.

I did a post a while back showing average mean wind speeds during meteorological winter in Ireland are on the decrease. The decrease was especially noticeable in the north with less of a noticeable decrease further south showing the averages becoming more uniform which possibly indicates a tendency for lows to track further southward. Met Éireann seem to believe this too:

"Overall number of North Atlantic cyclones is projected to decrease by approx 10 %. Results also indicate that the paths of extreme storms will extend further south, bringing an increase in extreme storm activity over Ireland, although the number of individual storms is projected to be quite small"

They seem to have removed this quote from their website though for some reason. These trends don't rule out the chances of severe events like Éowyn cropping up. They will always occur. Many times we'll be lucky and the worst stays offshore then occasionally we may get direct hits leading to destruction. Regardless, we need to be better prepared. However, the right message needs to be given and what An Taoiseach has said is not correct.

Why can't we have similar broadband outages maps? It's incredibly hard to chase down providers with them giving some bs response to you. It shouldn't be hard to notice X% of connections have dropped off a cabinet and then map it out accordingly (whether its Siro/NBI/OpenEir or otherwise). Or am I being completely ignorant here?

I've no broadband, and I WFH. The cell tower up the road is not completely repaired and I'm struggling to work at about 1mbps during peak times. I've rang multiple times to try report it but its just a general 'we'll look into it', or at one point 'we can send an engineer out and it'll cost you' response. I've also got 'It'll take 10 days' response. They literally have no clue what the status is or what they're doing.

If connection is gone how will people look at it?

I thought it was 'interesting' that every radio interview with a ESB spokesman they would emphasis the need to check their website for the latest info.

Do they ever cop themselves on. We've no fecking power.

So how did you post this then if you no power! 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,016 ✭✭✭jackboy

That's the idea, and also to remove responsibility for any future events.

It is annoyingly ironic- and this poster is probably does same as me gets over 50% charge on device in nearest town library and then it runs out after a few hours - however the esb networks site doesn't seem all that accurate - most still without are on a long finger date (5th for me) A sort of blanket delay now I'd say - according to esb on the phone they are waiting for parts, can't get parts, or can't get access into pension fund forestry- They only started clearing trees behind me this evening - I don't hold out much hope for quick reconnection -

My modems & fibre box both use 12v. So I tried using a 12v car battery along with some spare dc jacks that I had and they worked but I was worried about damage during the storm so I used my other power back from Halfords that gives 240v. Then I was able to add my car battery in parallel with it to extend its capacity.

I might get this for future storms. All filled with 15kwh it would cost about 1600€

If the this poster you are referring to is me let me put you straight.

We had no power for 7 days. No mobile signal for 6 days. We couldn't drive anywhere for 4 days. We were blocked in. When we eventually got to a small town there was still no mobile signal.

I have a portable radio for such situations. That is why it pissed me off greatly to continue to hear ESB tell it's customers to check it's website.

    OK

Just wondering why hasn’t there been major fundraising for relief efforts? The Late Late should be running one tonight. There usually is in other countries after a weather event like this.

had a phone call from ESB Networks at 8pm tonight, was cagey at first thinking it was a scam.

nice girl on the other end asking if I had electric back yet?

    Eh no !

Dont they know who is connected and not anymore?

asked how was we doing, I mean what can you say, we have no electricity , or heat!

Then asked would I like to be informed of local hubs and community help. I've had no electricity for over a week, I already know this this !

then asked if I was getting help from neighbours, eh hello, we have no power in the area!

Gave her apologies and said goodbye.

it was so surreal I couldn't couldn't get angry! still not sure it wasn't a scam call!

    Call was from Cork.

Maybe the government could stump up some cash? Haven't we got tens of billions sloshing around the coffers?

They found it quick enough when we had to house those fleeing war. Now their own population are living without light, heat, Internet, phone signal but they are dragging their feet.

The recent road days in the last few days a sharp reminder that even though the winds are gone, the conditions are still treacherous.

    Stay safe everyone.

Of course, I’ve already posted that the Government completely failed in their preparations before, during and after this event. But the damage from this storm is huge and will be expensive. People without running water and electricity - which I understand is a result of storm damage cannot function without these basic needs. Government didn’t prepare with generators, or offer meals, warmth, food or anything to anyone. I myself know of two adults in separate families who ended up in hospital over this period. I’m shocked tbh at their and the media’s initial response.

RTE funded by the government... enough said. Wont be too critical of them anyhow.

I thought this was practical and a good idea.
It’s Carlow weather adaptation ideas. Storm Darragh was a forewarning for Galway and they didn’t heed it or apply learnings to Storm Eowyn, big changes are needed.

RTE Playback on now covering the storm. Many of us would have missed those radio shows.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Today, the Govt finally add accommodation costs to their response

With thousands now into their second week without vital services, the Department of Social Protection said those who have had to source hotel or B&B accommodation, as a result of the disruption, will be given financial support, once they can provide confirmation of their bookings. It is understood claims will be cross referenced with MPRN details of individual electricity customers.

Only back online.. normally just a reader.. lots to catch up on! it has been absolute hell in west Galway the last week although it feels like an eternality.. the damage is unreal, i'll post pics when i get my stuff together. Our local park is destroyed, there's still wires everywhere… the price gouging was unreal between water, eco logs and petrol.. cant decide if its pressure, exhaustion, cold, depression, menopause or a combo of everything.
