From serving for the first set to completely collapsing. Quite the achievement from Shelton.

That last point there sums up the problem for Shelton, he has to make those shots. Watch Sinner win this game now.

Completely forgot about the Sinner match with all the commotion and lack of power to watch it anyway this morning. Slightly more competitive than I thought it'd be for one set anyway.

Djokovic looks like he might be done, still has the ability but not the body for it anymore by the looks of things. He needs a kind quarter final draw at least with his current ranking I'd think to stand a better chance.

Was never a fan but will definitely miss him when he's gone, end of an era unlikely to be repeated.

Would love to see Zverev put up a good fight against Sinner in the final - about time he won his first Major! Such a tough game physically, whatever about Novak but a lot of the younger players in trouble too - Sinner looked lame today as well. But he is so cool and calm.

Sinner a big favourite to win but Zverev has a good record against him and a positive head to head including beating him in a couple of slams over 5 sets. This is a different Sinner these days but their head to head suggests that Zverev is a tricky match up style wise and in tennis that is very important, Zverev has plenty of weapons. The biggest and crucial challenge for Zverev is the mental aspect, he has shown frailties in the biggest matches over the years and has some of that scar tissue mentally. On the flip side while he has never won a slam, he has won a lot of big tournaments including World tour finals, masters series and olympics so he knows how to win.

The biggest surprise for me that Zverev hasnt won is because he has a very strong all round game. Most players you can pinpoint a glaring weakness, this used to be his serve years ago with all the double faults. He now still serves really big but he is much more consistent with 1st serve % and way less double faults. On top of that he always had a good forehand and his backhand for me is top 3-4 in the Men's game. He also moves pretty well for a very tall guy. It just has to be mental with him.

We know what Sinner will bring, consistent and powerful shots off both wings, a strong and solid serve and he moves well and will get plenty of balls back. His consistency and cooler composure may well win the day but if Zverev turns up and plays at his best, I think he can cause an upset and thats what I am going for.

Zverev will have to be brave on the biggest points. So often he plays well, then goes back to passive tennis and hoping to extract errors from his opponent. He's got plenty of weapons, so if he uses them when he needs them most he could win. Have gone off Sinner a lot after this year's revelations, but I'm still hoping he beats Zverev.

Hard to see how Zverev can win on Sunday.

Wobble aside when trying to swerve it out at 5-2, that was almost perfect from Keys.

Sabalenka needs to find something and hope for a drop in level from Keys to get into the match. Sabalenka in three was always my prediction, and I'll stick with it for now. Really hope Sabalenka can get into this 🤞

    Is anyone watching?!

Sabalenka being a bit classless here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,755 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

That was quite the hissy fit that Sabalenka threw - i thought she was better than that tbh. Looks like she can give it but not take it?

Well done to Keys, that was some game to grind out, the pressure of a first Slam in your sights must be unbelievable.

Well, I didn't think Keys had it in her, but I'm delighted to be proved wrong.

Veeery disappointed with that result, but it's a feeling I'm well used to in tennis 😅

Beating Sabalenka, Swiatek, Rybakina, Svitolina and Collins is some run though.

That's the thing … no-one can ever say she had an easy draw, quite the opposite.

I can't see the men's final being as entertaining, but we shall see.

    Great match from Keys.

Who on earth thought that polo underneath a blazer was a good look for the umpire???

Brilliant from Keys, I’m delighted for her. Left it late to win her first slam, but taking out World no 1 & 2 was some feat.

Fantastic that Keys won. Not a fan of either Sabalenka or Swaitech with their carry on on court.

The switch of racquets obviously worked out for Keys. Changed from a Wilson Ultra to a Yonex eZone. I wouldn't have thought she would have needed more power.

It wasn't the power that was the problem for Keys it was the control or spin and seemingly the Yonex racquet is letting her hit the ball as hard as she did but for whatever she is not missing. Don't ask me what the difference is as it is not just racket but also string type and string pattern but the changes have led to her hitting the ball in more consistently. She also changed her server. I was reading about the changes she has made and the key thing that stuck out for me was that she bought into the changes and previously she was unwilling to change.

For anyone that plays tennis they will now any adjustment big or small to a stroke is tough, there can be a lot of pain before there is gain. When I was getting coaching I spoke to the coach about my forehand, which is the best part of my game but I hitting it flat so the coach had me change grip to create more spin, I was still using the shake hands grip I was taught when I was 7. I had to totally buy into the change and it was tough especially when I was hitting the forehand and ball wasn't even getting to the net, I persevered with it and now it is like normal. We have seen the same with Djokovic when he was changing his server around 2009/10 and it was a nightmare for him.

eZone is their power racquet, which is why Murray changed to it just before he retired. VCore is their spin racquet and the VCore Pro (now Percept) is for control. With her natural power, I'm surprised to see her chage to a power racquet, but it obviously worked. When Svitolina was changing, they brought out models that they thought would suit, but she went for one that was the total opposite to her Blade. All about how it feels in the hand.

Not exactly an exhilarating set, but first blood to Sinner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,755 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

I only have half an eye on it, but Zverev doesn't look like he's going to threaten this final at all. Playing Sinner must be like playing a brick wall - no emotion, no sound, no dramatics - meanwhile you can nearly hear Zverev slowly unravelling.

Maybe he'll pull something together, but I wouldn't be putting money on it….

Looks like this match is over. Highly doubt Zverev, of all people, has it in him to come back from two sets down.

That dead net cord at 4-4 in the second set tie-break was a huge stroke of luck for Sinner, not that he really needed it.

    Underwhelming

The absence of the Big 3 is becoming more apparent with each passing slam.

You don't know what you've got till it's gone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,298 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Anyone claiming their dominance was bad for the game was nuts

I remember a vocal minority claiming that but I just used to ignore them.

An unbelievable era for sport, in general, and one that transcended tennis. Just glad I got to live through it
