Welsh Megaman’s Inner Voice: Don’t say it, don’t say it, don’t say it, don’t say it, don’t say it, don’t say it…

THEY THINK IT’S MOLDOVA, IT IS NOW!!

    Sorry, I tried, I really did. 😞

Just listened this morning. I liked it until the chorus. Gave me some Florence and The Machine vibes initially, but then became a bit of a mess.

Per the leak a few weeks back, Adgy is also one of the artists competing at Eurosong. Song reveal today

    Lyra is a strange one.

When she first appeared, she had a really good voice, something a bit different and thought she could be a big star.

I thought she was only 17 or 18 when she broke through as she has a very immature personality. She's 31.

    Fun fact: Eurovision has never had 38 competing countries in a single year. Post-2004, it's had 36, 37, 39, 40, 41, 42 and 43, but never 38.

In 2006 and now 2025, there were 38 countries signed up, but a withdrawal in both years reduced the number of participants to 37.

    Song #3

I actually really like this, but feels like it would need big staging to stand out.

Can't sleep, and I've done the worst thing possible by scrolling on my phone. Anyway, looks like the Independent has posted a story too early (note the 6am time.) Confirms that Samantha Mumba is in the lineup for Eurosong.

    IMG_0472.jpg

Without hearing her song, selecting someone who last had a hit in 2002 would be huge step-back for us, but I'm sure RTÉ and the usual Louis Walsh-linked faces will push her all they can.

Samantha Mumba and Emmy both now confirmed, and both songs are already on Spotify.

I think the Samantha Mumba song is terrible, arguably the worst of the lot so far. Takes a long time to get going and ultimately goes nowhere. I'm sure they'll wheel out Linda Martin who'll tell us it could win Eurovision though 🙄

I think Emmy's song is good, even if it does feel like standard Europop fare. Right now I'd say it should be between Bobbi Arlo and Emmy.

The ADGY song is a bit so-so for me, wouldn’t stick in the memory by the end of the night.

And ‘Run Into The Night’ is nowhere near as good as ‘Running With The Night’ by Lionel Richie, which is how I measure all Eurosong entries.

No doubt about it, Samantha will get the biggest push in the media out of all the artists. Linda is ready and waiting with her "I think she can go all the way" quote, and Barry Egan will probably have a full-page interview with Samantha in the Sindo this weekend (Barry and Samantha are the perfect match - they both peaked in the 2000s.)

It's the worst song (so far) and if we go with this, it's back to not getting out of the semis.

Lots of people saying elsewhere online that she'll walk it as she's well-known, but do many people under 25 actually know who she is? I saw one of her videos a while back on MTV as part of a "Whatever happened to…?" playlist.

I remember mentioning Samantha Mumba to my niece a while back and her comment was "who are they, are they a band?" She is 21 so yeah.

The Samantha Mumba song is very very poor, a mess with a load of build up to nothing....but she will be getting the media and panel push as you say. Not sure that will be enough they did the same with that dreadful Louis Walsh boyband last time.

From songs so far I would say Bobbi Arlo would be our best bet if it's good live. It doesn't sound dated.

ADGY song is decent but he couldn't sing his song live the last time I can't see that changing.

Reylta is a little dull but solid enough to possibly make the final.

EMMY song is a pretty basic slightly dated euro pop song, not sure how I feel about someone from Norway who has competed at junior Eurovision and failed to make it to Eurovision via national comp trying to compete for us.

The last artist to be revealed will be a male, which means Lyra isn't taking part after all. This means that shíte from Samantha Mumba was the fast tracked song 😬

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 833 ✭✭✭supereurope

Of course - the act linked to Louis Walsh seems to usually get the fast-track place.

Of all the Eurovision songs about a Soviet dog partying in space instead of dying of hypothermia mid-flight, this is hands/paws down my favourite.

    Lino Richie’s ‘Running’ rating: 7/10

Seeing a lot of "OMG, I loved Samantha when I was younger!! I'll definitely vote for her!"-type comments online.

Seriously, Ireland, if you vote for the worst song in the lineup because you had the singer's poster on your wall 25 years ago,…well, then it's easy to see why Ireland spent so long in the Eurovision doldrums.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76,086 ✭✭✭✭Welsh Megaman

Exactly…judge the song, not the artist.

That said, the song feels like one long build-up to a ‘big’ chorus that never arrives.

A big build-up to an anti-climax…that’s what SHE said. 😎

But enough about my love life…

    Lino Richie’s ‘Running’ rating: 5/10

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 833 ✭✭✭supereurope

The comments on the song from "neutral" sites (i.e., non-Irish) Euro fansites are similar to what you said- "it goes nowhere" is a common one.

I'm worried now this will win…thanks to voters who won't even hear the song but who fancied Samantha when they were 13.

A good song to row to when I’m in my Viking Longboat, but nothing more.

Bonus points however for rocking the Dexy’s ‘Geno’-era look of woolly hat and donkey jacket.

    Lino’s Rating: 6/10

NIYL's song does nothing for me, this would go nowhere in Eurovision.

Having heard all six, my ranking is:

    1. Emmy - Laika Party

    2. Bobbi Arlo - Powerplay

    3. Adgy - Run Into The Night

    4. Reylta - Fire

    5. Samantha Mumba - My Way

    6. NIYL - Growth

I think only Laika Party and Powerplay would be qualification contenders in Basel. Run Into The Night probably won't stand out enough. Fire is let down massively by its chorus. My Way is a mess that takes far too long to get going, whilst Growth just isn't good enough.

Laika Party is both gimmicky and repetitive, and I'm sure come May I'd be sick of it, but as most viewers on the night would only be hearing it for the first time I think it could do well in a televote. Without some kind of revamp I don't think Powerplay will do enough to connect with people en masse.

As for who'll win, I don't think it'll be Emmy. Whilst it won't be stated outright by the panel, I'm sure there'll be someone to very subtly remind us of the fact that Emmy isn't Irish and try to sway the vote elsewhere. Exact same thing happened to Erika Selin back in 2015. Samantha would've been a good choice 23 years ago, but I hardly think she's the 'big name' some at Rté seem to think she is.

All things considered I think Bobbi Arlo will get the nod. It's a solid song that could get us into the final, and hopefully with a revamp it'll pack more of a punch. Keeping my fingers crossed for Emmy though!

Big news from Finland, 'Puppy' is out of UMK after the band were disqualified. Allegations of inappropriate contact with a minor have come to light for one of the band members, and they've been removed from the competition and have have now disbanded. I quite liked their song, but this is obviously for the best.

Erika Vikman, 2nd place from UMK 2020, now looks to be the favourite with the subtly titled Ich Komme

Meanwhile, Israel have chosen Yuval Raphael as their entrant, song to come later. She's a survivor of the October 7th attacks, so no doubt Israel will be using that as a focal point of their performance. Just don't ask about anything that's occurred in Gaza since.

It's got to be Bobbi Arlo surely. It's the standout song and our best chance of qualifying. I really hope she can deliver it live.

Niyl is the next best for me, but might be more of a grower than one that has an immediate impact.

Reylta's song is decent but the chorus is very weak.

Samantha Mumba's song is a total mess, which is a real shame.

Can't stand the Emmy song personally. I want us to build on the momentum from Bambie and keep sending interesting, authentic artists. A copy and paste from Norway's MGP doesn't cut it.

I expect Adgy to come last, the song is so dull.

    Bobbi for the win!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 833 ✭✭✭supereurope

I agree, Powerplay is our best chance of getting to the final.

With Niyl, we just don't have the luxury of going for a grower. You get one chance to impress the televoters, a grower isn't the right option. We made that mistake in 2015 with Molly Sterling, a great song but it needed several listens. It had no chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,253 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Yes, you'd have to think momentum is with Bobbi Arlo. She seems the natural successor to Bambie and her song is the most impactful. My Way is a bit of a mess in structure and the response online has been rather underwhelming.

I could see Emmy get a top 3 finish : Laika is an insanely catchy entry.

Oh…and just for a trip down Eurovision memory lane on this Friday evening…

Not sure it could get top 3, but I think it has potential to do very well if the staging is great. It kinda reminds me in some ways of Unicorn, very generic but quite catchy. And we all saw how well Unicorn did once the staging was unveiled in Liverpool.

There were rumours floating around online all week that the BBC was going to unveil the UK representative tonight at the end of the last episode of The Traitors. Doesn't appear to have happened.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76,086 ✭✭✭✭Welsh Megaman

To echo posters on here already, it is a two-horse race for me between EMMY and Bobbi Arlo (EMMY by a nose).

That said, Adgy’s song has become a bit of an earworm after a few listens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,367 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

I think Bobbi Arlo would be my favourite but need to see what it is like live. The EMMY song has the most potential of the rest but I find it a bit repetitive and cheesy sure we will see.

Erika Selin I remember that one it was a bit of a tune! But in fairness we went with Playing with numbers which deserved much better than not making the final :(

I remember Adgys song a few years back and it was decent well the recorded version...but live...vocals poor and felt dated.
