Those Irish songs have zero chance of qualifying, way too generic

Rumours flying around the online fandom that Samantha Mumba is the "wildcard" for the Irish final.

If she won, it would be a massive step back for us after finally moving forward last year. She hadn't had a hit since 2002.

I say this every year, but when will RTÉ finally realise that just because Louis Walsh managed Johnny Logan in 1987 and Linda Martin in 1992, that doesn't mean he knows what it takes to win Eurovision in the 21st century? He hasn't a clue, and a has-been isn't the answer.

Linda is no doubt getting ready with her "I think she can go all the way" quote.

At this stage, it sounds as if these artists have fallen into the trap of going into that mindset of what they THINK will sound good at Eurovision, purposely ‘tailor-fitting’ their music to suit the contest.

Any one of those songs could have been released as a Eurovision song in the last five years.

That’s what made Bambie so unique - she wasn’t ‘nip-and-tucking’ her music to fit Eurovision (the same goes for Nemo and Baby Lasagna), which of course made her stand out even more. Bambie didn’t need Eurovision - Eurovision needed Bambie.

I hope to be proved wrong, but listening to those songs (and if the rumours are true that the wildcard is Samantha Mumba) you can’t help but feel that RTE have taken a fatal backwards step.

I think Malta are currently down that hole…they haven't qualified since 2021, and they keep sending "safe", generic songs that they think have that "Eurovision sound" and will bring them back to the final. And surprise, surprise, it's not working. The songs that have stood out and done well in recent years are those that WEREN'T written for Eurovision.

Yes, they're sneered at it quite a lot over the years, but every now and then, just to get some publicity, and remind people they're still touring, they'll make some vague "We might do Eurovision someday" statement. Instant publicity.

An announcement from Basel coming at 2pm. I assume it's the unveiling of the presenters? Normally that comes around January.

I don't really know any Swiss television personalities, but I do know Sandra Studer (who sang for Switzerland in 1991) presents the Swiss-German version of Dancing with the Stars, so she might be a possibility .

Someone's voice having that much distortion or similar on a song isn't always a great sign for what it will sound like live...but that clip is certainly interesting.

For me, a bit of a grower after a few listens - very Chappell Roan-y, even shades of ‘The Voice’ by Eimear Quinn. 🙂

I look forward to the live performance with Rammstein-level pyrotechnics - that, or a dodgy ‘Crazy World Of Arthur Brown’ hat. 😁
