There is no need on early Wednesday afternoon to have a storm Friday morning as number 1 news item. It still should be discussed on the news to make people aware and to start preparing / changing plans. And then tomorrow when there is more specific detail talk about the more specific detail. The fear and hype comes when they talk too much about it too soon and the news talk to met eireann who say "high impact event, very dangerous in many areas, too early to say exact path and impact" so they fill the news with the hype merchants well known on facebook and the like who give worst case scenario with no consequence if they are wrong

If I was Met Eireann I'd make whole country RED. It's a dangerous storm and will save lives. There's a danger to life with this storm. Seriously. Not just in Cork Limerick Kerry and Clare.

Have been advised that a red warning will issue for the remaining Western and North Western counties imminently for 'daytime hours' on Friday (Local Authority meeting at 2pm).

I'm confused why Met Eir haven't extended the red up the west coast yet when Michelle Dillon has already said this morning that it's a certainty.

They've often issued warnings before and then later adjusted the timings and have added or taken out counties. So it can't be for that reason.

Already hearing of people here in Galway going ahead with plans on Friday because we're in an orange area (or at least currently think they can go ahead).

If I was Met Eireann, I would assess all the data and make expert judgements accordingly based on their pre-establised criteria. Its worth remining people that orange warning is:

Infrequent and dangerous weather conditions which may pose a threat to life and property.

Prepare yourself in an appropriate way depending on location and activity. All people and property in the affected areas can be significantly impacted.

Check your activity/event and delay or cancel as appropriate.

Its not, sure everything is grand, continue as normal. I have already altered my plans, which would have had me away Thursday night and returning Friday morning, even though I am in and Orange area and would still have done so if the data was suggesting it would stay Orange. It is likely to be called Red this evening or early tomorrow though when there is more certainty around timing and location

Gerry just on rte radio, dangerous storm and that red would soon be extended to other Western Counties. Said basically everyone should stay home Fri morning

I'm due to fly to London from Dublin at 7am on Friday. Thoughts on whether this will be disrupted?

Mixed messaging really not welcome from Met Eireann right now. People here resolutely planning for school Friday morning as it's orange.

I don't think it's fair to say they are giving mixed messaging, the Met Eireann message right now is clear, orange everywhere with red for the 4 Munster counties.

The only people getting mixed signals are those going and looking for more information from sources other than Met Eireann and trying to predict what might happen at some undetermined point in future, i.e. enthusiasts rather than the general public.

The Aerlingus website has a potential travel disruption warning about Friday.

Friday morning rush hour seems to be the apex of the storm.

Thank you to all the amateur weather watchers here. I always find your knowledge accurate and you always give the heads up before ME.

As regards warnings there are alot of stupid people out there who dont actually follow any news or weather reports. Its necessary for ME to issue the warnings as these idiots will then hear from their workplaces/schools etc to stay at home. If the message to stay at home doesnt come through these idiots will be out and about and lives could be lost. There is also a language barrier for some - they live in Ireland but dont follow Irish news. The warnings IMO are necessary because it gets the message through to people.

I mentioned to people I work with this morning about a bad storm coming Friday and not to arrange meetings. Five people didnt hear anything about it at all.

6Z ECM. Parts of the S & SE wouldn't be upgraded to Red going on these charts IMO.

since the orange warning is between 2 am and 17pm does that mean that a flight out from Dublin at 17 pm should be ok ?

Remember too that tomorrow will be a windy day . This is NOT the storm.

Also Windy app shows it being Windy or stormy for 80percent of the next 7 days so there'll be a lot going on and damage is almost certain in many locations.

There's a lesson here for the met offices. Storms are given names to make communication easier. Giving them difficult to pronounce names undoes some of that.

1998 wasn’t a one in 10 year event. Belmullet recorded a higher gust in 98 108mph than Debbie and that equalled its record set back in 1957. Malin just 3 miles shy of Debbie. Finner and Castlederg have estimated gusts of 99mph/97mph.

Were coastal Wicklow, how is it looking over here? Mainly seeing news on the west but not hearing alot about this side of the country. Hoping that means we're avoiding a lot of it.

If you look at the timing on some of the models, it has the storm come in a little earlier on some (GFS seems to peak about 6). Thats why they are waiting. I am sure they are seeing variation in the models they use and are reviewing internally and possibly wating until the next outputs to make a call. If the red criteria for much of the country was to fall between 3 and 6 for example, you would have loads of parents ranting on boards all morning Friday about "sure its only a bit a wind".

If they say Red from 6-12 for example plans will be made by businesses, schools etc accordingly. If it turns out it should have been 3-9 they will be lambasted even if they update in time.

Depends which model you have faith in

Just the 200kph there for coastal Galway/Clare @ 8am Friday

If the required aircraft is actually in Dublin. If it was cancelled getting in…

Disruption can last days. Can, not "will".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 99 ✭✭cnbyz

yeah thats right. inbound flight is due to arrive at 15:30 pm on Friday. its a 4 hr flight from Istanbul as well. so i'll be able to find out if my ride is coming to pick me up or not

Connacht and Donegal to be added soon to the red warning and then potentially the whole country by tonight or tomorrow morning. Government have been briefed about the storm and Met Eireann have warned a potential nationwide red.

Such a beautiful day today. I have an Airbnb and currently doing some painting and decorating. Every bit of garden furniture, the bins (empty) and all plant pots are now safe and secure in the kitchen. Off to the bottle bank now as I haven’t been since before xmas.

Have candles, torches, wind up radio/torch, an abundance of sticks for the non boiler stove, gas camping stove, phone power bank, battery powered construction grade lights and playing cards.
