Coastal Clare in for a proper hammering.

While it maybe typical, the problem is that many trees that survive Eowyn will be weakened and therefore may fall even if Sunday's system is a standard storm or just a strong wind event. Let's just say I won't be going walking my usual route that day.

Enough of that kind of thing. Im off out to stock up in toilet roll, bread, milk and for some reason Chicken Breasts which disappeared off the shelves a few weeks back after the snow warnings. Even in Cork City area .. which had … NO SNOW :D

Really hoping that these are the realistic wind speeds for my location Friday. A good bit of model consensus that the SE and S will escape a lot of the worst of this, although still models like the UKMO showing us well into red territory for a while.

Take an all-model weighted consensus is my advice, ICON looks closest to middle of pack at present. WolfeEire has been posting maps that you can use to get a sense of model spread and consensus. No way to say what we will know on Thursday afternoon that would be "new info" relative to today, we could already have this nailed down, or not.

That is literally close to being off the charts. Good to get the heads up to pin things down again.

    Interesting ..

"Earlier in the week it was brought to my attention by locals within the Shannon area that the Hurricane Hunters, NOAA, have flown their research aircraft across the Atlantic from their typical haunts such as the Gulf of Mexico, to be based in Shannon airport for Storm Éowyn."

Here is the latest max gusts for Eowyn on the ARPEGE. And for comparison the max gusts on the ARPEGE for Ophelia in 2017, which was a nationwide Red warning with gusts of 156 kmph at Roches Point, which ARPEGE forecast correctly.

Fair to say that Eowyn should be significantly stronger than Ophelia….Looks more like 1961 Debbie, IMHO.

The delay in issuing a red warning for Mayo while issuing it for other places is already causing a dismissive perspective here and costing precious time, people are saying "it won't be as bad here if they haven't gone red"

A day's notice is barely enough for this in terms of prep. Met Eireann need to be very clear and timely with their forecasts for this, there should be no doubt in anyone's mind by this evening in places like coastal Mayo what exactly is coming. Even if every model shaved 20km off their projections it's still unprecedented.

Harmonie brings gusts in excess of 200km/h inland to a small portion of north Clare

What do you do in that scenario? That's a question of whether staying in your house there is a good idea or not. 200kmph is windows coming in and roofs lifting.

Whatever about whiffs of downgrades from other models, the UKMO HD isn't having it.

Gusts of 130kmph - 150kmph penetrating well inland in latest Harmonie

Happy (scared) to say I live pretty much inside that inland portion of North Clare.

You'd have to envisage a nationwide red tomorrow at this stage. Inland south east escaping the worst it seems but some models still showing gusts of 130kmh+ in those areas. If one those takes down a tree and kills someone all ire would unfortunately be directed at Met eireann for not having a red warning in place. Not really a risk worth taking.

The plane spotters will be out in force to see this. Hope they don't do anything silly because shannon is very exposed and will be absolutely blasted on Friday

I have never seen these mean speeds forecast for Galway city on the symbol forecast from MÉ.

    Those windchills are hilarious! -17°c!

Around this time 35 years ago the UK and Ireland were hit by a major storm, the Burns Day storm. Max recorded gust of 172 km/h in the UK, buildings collapsed and 47 people killed. Our max gust was 168 km/h at Dunmore Head. If the models for this one are mostly correct, then this one would be significantly stronger? Jeez

Met Éireann will issue a red warnings if warranted based on the data available to them. Trees may still come down if the warning is not red, and that would not be Met Éireann's fault.

Well we're all stocked up here. Emergency lights. Fuel. Gas stove. Gas BBQ. Wood burner. Water. Chain Saw sharpened and fuelled up. Not going anywhere on Friday.

The crazy thing is we made that decision. Didn't wait for ME to change a colour. Some of you should try it. It's called responsibility.

Looking like a full nationwide RED warning going on the output. Peak commute times for transport networks.. school runs etc. Scary charts. MET need to call this soon so people can have time to plan. The French crews will be needed again.

Irish Ferries have put holyhead to dublin in doubt now for all sailings on Friday but not the other way around for some reason 🤷

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,108 ✭✭✭TheMilkyPirate

You're thinking rationally. The majority of the population will not. You can be damn sure met eireann would foot the blame.

Wind gust ECM ensembles (0Z run) for Galway city.

Similar for Tralee. Some of the outliers are just insane at this stage.

They come here relatively frequently, so this may just be a coincidence

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 103 ✭✭Deatr

They come here relatively frequently around this time of year. Apparently they’re leaving tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,756 ✭✭✭Pretzill

The predicted gusts are higher here than Darragh and Darragh floored an entire forest here and we were without electricity for a week! It is a given the electricity system will be affected 😢 Roll on spring

I put up a greenhouse last weekend because why not. I'll be delighted if it gets destroyed at this point as its completely empty 😁

Clare has been mentioned a few times as being in the firing line on Friday. Wind gust ensembles for 6am in Lahinch. Ominous to say the least.
