Had a short test drive with EV3 today, didn't have much time so couldn't check everything. Very nice to drive, spacious in front. That sliding table is made of very low quality material, or at least it feels like it.

Just a question on price, dealer quoted me 49450e for Gt line.

Website states 47190 + 600 metalic paint. Seems like dealer is charging 1660 as a delivery charge. Is that normal? Or am I missing something?

What’s anyone’s thoughts on the EV3 base model vs Tesla M3 RWD? Both similar price. Like that the Kia is a SUV and has a 7 year warranty. M3 has a bit more wow factor though with more features.

I had a spin in the EV3 the other day. The garage had the Earth 2 and GT Line spec, I took the GT version.

I suppose I was a bit underwhelmed overall. I can't figure out why all the motoring media have such glowing reports about this car.

I've had the gen 1 eNiro for 3 years and maybe its a reflection on how good that car is compared to the EV3 that has me a little disappointed. Yes, everything about the new model is better - but not by that much in many ways.

The EV3 is a bit quieter, but maybe the 17" wheels on the base model would be a lot quieter. Every touchable surface is hard (recycled) plastic, at least the eNiro had some soft touch surfaces. The interior is a lot more pleasant, though, the eNiro is a sea of black plastic.

I didn't really drive it much in traffic so I can't say how much better it might be but overall it was a nice drive.

Looks wise, its way nicer IMHO but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The EV3 is bigger that the eNiro. The footwells & legroom in the front is huge, I would say the rear space is more or less the same. The current Niro EV is bigger in the rear, I would say.

The infotainment centre is fab, very responsive and just great to use.

Features surprisingly absent on the top spec model are the blind spot monitoring (it just has the BCA) and 360 degree camera.

So while I'm still going to buy an EV3, I'm not blown away by it the way I expected I would be. Lack of a similar alternative, trade-in value on my old car and the good local dealer are probably the main reasons for doing so. The Elroq is due next year but I think it will be more expensive on a like-for-like basis. Nothing else appeals to me.

I believe cars priced under 40-50k, are reaching a point where it’s becoming difficult to make them feel significantly better than previous iterations. Features like tech, power, space, suspension comfort, and sound dampening have all been refined to a reasonably high standard already, software UI is probably the most noticeable improvement they can make to a budget or mid-tier car. If you want noticeable improvements in any of the non-software areas or interior space, you’ll likely need to pay a good bit more for a higher-end car/model. I doubt we'll see the likes of Mercedes "Magic Body Control" coming to sub-50k cars any time soon.

And in fairness, was the old model corolla/focus/Sportage/ Octavia very different to drive from the new model?

Usually they have a new body over pretty much the same engine and suspension.

I completely agree, I suppose I was taken in by the motoring journalists and expecting huge improvements.

The various tech/driver aids are probably where we will see improvement over the coming years, although the eNiro has not had any updates at all AFAIK. The smart cruise control really could do with a bit of tweaking.

Roll on January or whenever my new EV3 arrives, I'm sure I'll be praising it too 😁

it deals with the power far, FAR better than the eNiro you have.

I think the stock eNiro tyres had a lot to blame too.

When I changed mine to Goodyear all season tyres, it was a noticeable improvement when it was cold and wet outside (also handled snow great)

Such tyres should be standard in these islands. I don't see why new cars cannot have different tyres in different countries as they are easily fitted, they could just ship the cars with steel wheels and fit the alloys with appropriate tyres here.

That was sorted out in Niro EV by reducing the torque from 395 Nm to 255 Nm. The EV3 is 283Nm. It does feel a little less lively than my eNiro but not by much.

Original tyres on eNiro (Continentals, I think?) were terrible for wear. I had to change mine after 22k and I have a light right foot.

Mine was Michelin primacy 3 on the 2020 eNiro.

One thing to watch for is compare tread depth, as one way they are getting the A rating on rolling resistance is reducing the tread depth.

Which in turn makes them wear out quicker!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,844 ✭✭✭podge3

Yeah, you're right, they were Primacy 3s.

Tyres are a balancing act between grip, wear and efficiency, very difficult to get all 3 right.

However, some people reported getting twice the wear I did. I always drive with brake regen level 2 so maybe that didn't help with the wear.

Off topic but speaking of tyres, I see the small BYD comes with Linglongs as standard 🤔

Level1, auto here. I think the goodyears I had on lasted at least 50k.

Would be very prone to motion sickness so even when driving ,level 2 is a bit much, L1 feels like "normal engine braking"

Even driving ice id be light on the brakes.

e Niro needed new rear discs at 120k due to corrosion rather than use.

Seriously considering going straight to all season on the EV3 and selling what comes on it.

Anyone else notice they seem to have quietly removed the heads up display feature on the gt line on the main kia page and in more recent news articles?

been using the digital key / app this week in one and it’s really brilliant. Carpay also on it.

Does the Earth 3 version of the EV3 have a electric boot, so is there button on the car key that will open the boot for you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,542 ✭✭✭MarkN

    only on GT-Line.

Can I ask where you got this price? I got 2 quotes , one for 41500, and the other for 42700 : Earth 2 long range straight deal no trade in.

I’ve had a look at a GT Line now. Bit in the video where anyone who has ever been ice’d will enjoy.

Thinking of or have you already ordered the Kia EV3? I have a detailed look at the dash, driver display, steering wheel functions and the Kia Connect App

Test drove one of these today, it was the entry level spec and it showed. Loads of cheap nasty looking and feeling plastics inside and out. Even the higher spec model, not the GT Line, had horrible cheap looking plastic on the outside that would look rough very quickly.

It was great to drive though, plenty of power and the suspension was lovely and soft and it handled well. Pity it's not rwd though as you can feel it when you push on in the corners. It's feels as spacious as my M3, boot a little smaller but more practical.

The pricing on these is nuts though, about 48.5k for the Gt Line🤑. The entry level is about 3k more than the entry level Tesla M3, but it feels like a car about 10k cheaper.

Might wait a while to see if prices for the Gt Line come down before looking at one again.

M3 and EV3 entry level cars are about the price. M3 has a longer range but the EV3 has indicator stalks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,143 ✭✭✭JohnySwan

M3 has alot more than just longer range, anyone considering the entry level EV3 is mad. Insanely overpriced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,505 ✭✭✭joe1303l

Definitely better value but small SUV’s like the EV3 are the more desirable form at the moment. Saloon cars are disappearing fast.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 41,456 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

The one killer for the new M3 is the lack of those stalks. Many say they garnished to it but still.

They can be added now aftermarket using an oem stalk but that will still put a lot of Joe’s off the car. Silly move by Tesla.

True, but the MG ZS starts at about 31k, albeit with a smaller battery, which is where I feel this belongs.

Ya, agreed. It's too much for many.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,143 ✭✭✭JohnySwan

Just checked and the Megane e tech starts at 31k too. I actually can't believe how cheap the plastics looked on the EV3, especially around the rear door handles. None of the reviews I've watched have mentioned this, maybe they are all testing higher spec models.

Maybe the KIA goodie bags are masking the cheap plastics on the reviews.
