Well this lived up to expectations, it was fantastic! Myself and my sister had a blast, the two boys loved it too. Blessed with the weather for different visitors over the rest of the weekend, Saturday entailed a trip to Eagles Flying and Sunday a walk up Knocknarea to Queen Maeve's grave and also great views of the airshow on the way back down. There were loads of people up there to view it, seems to have been a great success. Hopefully it will be back next year.

Was there ever a What's On in Sligo thread here?

It might be handy to have one that we can all add to though I realise we are getting towards the end of the festival season and summer days now for the year but still a lot happening.

Old Fair Day in Tubbercurry today, if I'm not mistaken.

That's right, it is on today NH :) I'd love to go but have to work today. I should have booked myself into the hub and went for a look at lunch time, doh

Was at a wedding a few days ago where there was a Sligo guy entertaining the guests before, during and after the meal. He goes under the business name Scruffy Duffy. He had the place rocking. I have to say I was highly impressed.

TV Licence fee. Has anyone not received their TV Licence fee reminder?

I phoned second week in Jan and was told to expect a letter "in a week or two". Still nothing in post. It's impossible to pay on line without reference number and pin as detailed in letter.

I don't think I've gotten a postal reminder in years. Always via email.

    Check spam folder.

Thanks folks. Checked spam, not there. Not unless it has been sent to a defunct Eircom.net account from 20 years ago. We’ve always waited for letter which arrived first week in January every year. I’ll phone again tomorrow and will move my details into the 21st century 🤣

Do we still have a free parking in the town on Public Holidays or is this gone from this year?

    Hi

Looking for a place where i can dispose construction and demolition waste in Sligo or close to the town.

How much do they charge for it. I have a van and bathroom renovation on the way and think it would be cheaper than getting a skip.

Skips are a fixed price generally speaking. If you bring it to Greenstar by yourself, they will weigh you in and charge you accordingly

Just back from a long weekend in Sligo, is it just me or are the locals strangely hostile to outsiders? ive been to every part of the country and never experienced such defensiveness and judgment from the locals just for existing, it was really strange.

Must have got people on an off day - was it raining? 😁

If I had this experience anywhere else id agree with you wholeheartedly and take a look at myself but ive only experienced it in Sligo. I'll give you an example, went out for lunch in a pub on Sunday, was having a drink in the beer garden after and someone started talking to me, we got into conversation and during it I mentioned about a close relative of mine who has cancer, thats all I said, this person got awkward and told me to stop talking and treated me like I spat in their pint. It was the strangest experience.

That topic re cancer was obviously a sore point with the other guy so you could have got the same reaction anywhere in the country. I'm not from Sligo but would have been there on a couple of short visits over the years and found Sligo people just as friendly and welcoming as locals in any other town or village.

When you start a conversation in a Sligo thread trying to talk about how awful Sligo people are, don't be surprised if you don't like the answer you get.

Is this all based on one interaction you had with someone? This appears to be overly judgemental

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,182 ✭✭✭✭Andy From Sligo

you sure you weren't saying you had a close relative who has cancer and that its terrible disease and they didnt say "would ya shtop!" not meaning stop, but actually agreeing with you and 'would you stop' another way of saying I know , its shocking bad! - because that's Sligo talk for you - they not being rude though thats just the way Sligonian's talk. … well either that or as Muffler was saying it was a raw subject and started to get upset and didnt want to talk about it, like someone close to them has it or died recently.

Im from Roscommon and lived in Cork for several years, I say 'would you stop" daily.

That was just one example, I have others! I was in Sligo visiting an old college friend who's originally from Westport and when I brought it up with her she said she experienced the same thing for the first year or two until she learned how to blend in with locals.. a friend of theres (from Sligo) who I hadnt ever spoken to, invited my friend somewhere, as she was talking to my friend she had her back to me, didnt acknowledge me at all, when i politely said hello she ignored me and as she was walking off pointed at me and shouted "not you, youre not invited".. it was such a strange thing to say to a stranger let alone to even assume I was under the impression I was invited in the first place. There are other small, isolated incidences like that. It just gave me a bad impression, I imagine it must be hard for someone new to the town or someone who finds it hard to fit in generally. It made me wonder about mental health and suicide rates in that part of the country if thats how people treat others who arent within their social circle.

been living in Sligo since the 90's apart from the odd 'ah sure you are a blow' in' and oh yeah your lot caused the famine, and being asked why I havent dropped the brit accent after living here for years, sligo and its people have been great to me and kind on the whole lot of friendly people. Of course there are going to be some that scupper that. sorry you found out that personally yourself. but i suppose you cannot like tar everyone with the same brush just because you have met up with the odd ones that arent friendly - I have got past it and thankfully on the whole find people really friendly in sligo and ready to have a chat or help you out in some way or another. - another strange thing I have heard is maybe some parts of Sligo have happier and friendlier people - Tubbercurry in County Sligo is one as such I have heard people say where they are more friendlier/smiley/welcoming to strangers , so maybe people in certain areas of Sligo are more welcoming than other parts of Sligo - I dont know. But dont let it stop you visiting the area again and mingling because next time you may have a really good experience - let us know.

Hostels in Sligo town - are there just two?

    The Railway hostel

The White House hostel on Markievicz road

Has the Beehive on Wolfetone street closed?

    Thanks.

There is a new hostel type place called Éalú Lodge near the old gaol, have not stayed or visited but looks nice from pics. Whether it's priced similarly or not is another story but have a look:
