Is it bad of me to hope every sister is jailed for life?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,329 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

Its darker than the first one for sure, but still lots of laugh out loud moments as well. I think I'm going to wait until all episodes have dropped and then binge it, because I can't wait for episode 4 right now.

Is it bad of me to hope every sister is jailed for life?

For what? They didnt kill JP.

My only criticism is I find having Harry Potters aunt in it a bit jarring.

I still like it but it does feel like a completely different show.

The odd couple detective pairing isn't working for me, but then I found the insurance brokers the least good part of S1 too.

The female cop is like a puppy after her master. It's very hard to watch that

For what? They didnt kill JP.

The dialogue, their demeanour, crimes against acting? I'm extrapolating not actually believing the characters should go to jail for life! The fact I can't unsee Bono everytime his daughter is in view is also a mitigating factor.

My only criticism is I find having Harry Potters aunt in it a bit jarring.

The only good character as in acting and even some dialogue is Fiona Shaw (the Harry Potter aunt) IMO. She plays a sneaky cnt with a smidgen of possible redemption very well.

Claes Bang was the only good actor/character in series 1.

She'll always be the school principal from Three Men and a Little Lady to me.

Its so long ago since I saw that, I didn't notice.

The fact I can't unsee Bono everytime his daughter is in view is also a mitigating factor.

I have no idea what Bono's daughter looks like, so Im spared that particular factor.

She looks like her mother so why the other poster can't unsee Bono is beyond me.

Acting in general might be good but her NI accent is awful and distracting. She sounds very mumbly too I feel like I need subtitles when she's on screen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,329 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

I found/find her accent horrible too.

If you didn't like the Claffin brothers in series 1, you won't like the 2 detectives because they have taken up the mantle.

Some laugh out loud moments for me so far:

They confront Ian after the funeral, someone comes over to shake hands and Ursula goes "No! The hand shaking is over, its closed!"

Bibi: She's not pregnant yet, she's taking pills to prepare

Eva: That will get her uterus nice and spongey

    Ursula: Oh sweet!

    Becka: Gross!

The comedy is there, you just have to be ready for it.

Fairly hammy overacting from Shaw this week.

    Excellent choice of outtro music though. Just a pity that they cut it before one of my fave all time lyrics ;

"I'm a bad motherfucker, don't you know, And I'll crawl over fifty good pussies just to get to one fat boy's asshole"

Having defended it initially, I will agree with what a few others have said. It's definitely less polished this season round, less well thought out.

There were plenty of questions from season 1 to address in series 2, and IMO no need for Roger's sister.

Detective Loftus has one interest in life - golf. I really dont see him re-opening the case on JP's death.

I really liked Matt and Becka as a couple. If the actor playing Matt was not available for this series, then that would be a plausible reason for them not to be together anymore, but he is in the series, so, why break them up? Another thing that doesn't make sense.

    One other thing,

Graces death makes no sense either, from a story writing point of view.

I'm getting some Lost vibes from it. A feeling not helped by ABC being involved. A fantastic first season, and then pressure on the writer to write more and write fast, resulting in a mess.

It could have been a contractual issue with the actress being committed elsewhere.

I think the spoiler thing works from a story telling POV in the sense that otherwise they would essentially have been telling the same story over again.

The problem for me is that there seems to be less focus on the sisters this time. And given the above spoiler was the perfect opportunity to focus on the sisters and their relationships, its odd that they've gone with so many other storylines instead of keeping it tighter. What happened to Ursula a) using drugs, and b) stealing drugs? What happened between her and her husband? Did he find out about the affair or did she just leave him? BB and her wife have a massive falling out about having a baby and then they've fixed it all off screen. Becca's in a pretty serious long term relationship and we know nothing about him, or them. Last season did a much better job of showing how JP was f**king with everyone's lives. This season feels like it's lacking that through line, despite them obviously trying to replace The Prick with The Wagon.

Overall enjoying this season so far.

I was glad that they killed off Grace in this series, her character was just way too annoying, couldn't cope with anything, and just couldn't assert herself. Any scene with her in it I was getting irritated.
The new husband, Ian, is very annoying now in every scene, some of the writing is just a bit nonsensical. Doesn't really make sense that Blanaid likes him, and why Eva likes him.
Angelica has added some much needed suspense to the storyline.
Una, the detective, has added some welcome humour too.
Nice bit of mystery still there also which keeps it interesting.

They seem to have a tendency to abandon plot lines. The visit from Tusla (er, “Social Services”) being a perfect example, I was sure something was going to come of it but it wasn’t followed up. Maybe it will be in a future episode but with only three left it doesn’t seem like a lot of time to go down that particular rabbit hole and it seems to be just have been an extended joke about the amount of alcohol in the house.

I’m pretty convinced we haven’t seen the last of Angelica though.

It really is much less polished than season 1. Season 1, the trajectory was clear. Here is JP aka The Prick. Here is dumb and dumber, the insurance guys looking into his death. Here are the sisters, plotting to kill him, and in the flash forwards, covering up his murder.

This time around, the enemy is Angelica, but aside from being a nosey God botherer, She's not bad. Everytime you saw PJ and his actions, any normal person would want him dead. Angelica, you just wished she'd feck off. Now it looks like she has accidentally died.

Detective Loftus has his mind on his daughter, inexplicably. Before that his main interest was golf. It is highly unbelievable that he would reopen the case into JPs death. Grace died in a car crash. For an easier and quieter life, the facts as they stand require no further investigation, he could say so, and move on. Whereas in season 1, it was established early that the reason the insurance guys were investigating JPs death was that they could not afford to pay out the insurance claim. From a story telling point of view they had a motive to find something weird about JPs death. Loftus is just adding to his own workload needlessly.

It's an unfortunate fact but there is a single occupant road fatality every couple of weeks in Ireland. They dont receive intense investigations. Meanwhile, a body was found in a suitcase in the pond of a private house, and that seems to have been completely forgotten about.

I have my doubts. The actress has not been seen on screen since season 4 of Shameless, about 15 years ago. If it is true, and she was only going to be available for 3 episodes, I would have written her out completely. Just say she has moved to Wales or something.

With 2 episodes left, again I am getting Lost vibes. Far more open questions than can be plausibly answered in what time is left, and far too much filler and so many storylines that went nowhere.

Just caught the latest episode, left with a few questions to date,

Q1 Why did Detective Loftus put the money into the evidence of the car crash? Was it to close off that case that she took out money and it was with her, so no other plot to follow up and just a case of woman running away and had an accident?
Why didn't he just give the money to the solicitor, did he think he'd be found out that he couldn't possibly pay for it on his own salary? Or did he just change his mind and no longer wants the daughter with him.

Q2 What is the story with Angelica, is she dead or just unconscious? Has she woken up since or was she found by anyone since? I guess this is just plain old suspense building, all will be revealed at some stage.

Q3 Who did they dump in one of the earlier episodes? Presumably it was Ian. Had been expecting him to be a serial killer of multiple wives. Don't know how he gained so much trust so far.

Q4 What was Blanaid calling over to Angelica for? Assume Angelica was up to something, but still expect Angelica is actually a good guy, possibly an antiheroine?

Anne Marie Duff has been seen on screen a load of times since Shameless, what are you on about? She's worked almost constantly since then. I've no idea if she was double booked or not, but she's definitely not sat at home unemployed.

I agree it's much less polished though. I only remembered JP's dad had been found at the start of this series when I read an article about the show this morning. That seems to have been what got Loftus looking into JPs death again, and then Grace died so it seemed like it could all be connected. But he's clearly retired already and doesn't actually give a ****, which I guess is supposed to be in contrast with Houlihan's new on the job eagerness. But honestly, who cares.

Maybe assuming that you do watch every single fuckin thing was a bit of a mistake?

Let’s not forget also that Becka accidentally killed JP’s mother in the freezer in season 1, and to the best of my knowledge, this has just never been mentioned again and Becka appears to have no guilt over it at all 😅

While S2 is perfectly decent TV viewing its really suffering for me because there is no JP. What a brilliant TV character. He really was the true definition of a prick.

This is losing me. It was always delightfully nonsensical but they're all just doing the most inexplicably stupid things now, and none of it is even really in service of the story. I think I might be done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,329 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

Well there's only 2 episodes left so you might as well finish it, but I agree, I have been very disappointed with this season. I agree with you, it has gone from delightfully nonsensical to just nonsensical.

First season I have watched several times as i found it very enjoyable. Can't see myself doing a rewatch of season 2.

Same. I rewatched S1 before S2 came on and was delighted to find I enjoyed it even more the second time around. S2 has been a slog though.

Episode 7 is very rushed. There was more story development in the first 10 minutes than in the last 3 episodes put together.

So, in episode 7, we have established Ian is not who he says he is, and he is probably the one in the carboot at the start of the season.

Surely they could have establised all of that by episode 3-4 and we would have the rest of the season to enjoy watching him get his comeuppance. You know, like what made season 1 so enjoyable??

Even in a fast paced episode like ep 7, there is still so much filler. Whoever is the producer or showrunner should have sent them back after the first draft with a "needs to do better".

For anyone thinking about giving up, ep 7 is worth watching.
