Will that work being h.265? Thought saorview was 264

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 127 ✭✭Aidan McCarthy

Hi there. I don't know will that work over here or not

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,083 ✭✭✭Glaceon

It’ll be fine, H.265 devices would be backwards compatible with H.264, same as H.264 receivers are backwards compatible with MPEG-2.

The colour bar/clapper test on 25 has been replaced by the 2RN static card with an "Ardghleine" caption at the bottom-right.

Or is it another DVB-I test?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,247 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

HbbTV test channels possibly combined with a DVB-I pilot

It will but you will recall the last test card in HD was at LCN 14 and it became TG4 HD

They need to - it's embarrassing for RTE and the country as a whole when you walk in to hotel or corporate office reception areas with RTE news running on big screens in SD because there isn't an HD feed. It doesn't scream "this is a 21st century environment to be doing business in"….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,247 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

I'm afraid my memory isn't that good.

Is there enough capacity for a another HD channel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 17,655 ✭✭✭✭elperello

I doubt that any executive in a decision making capacity is going to be left standing around in a lobby/reception long enough to notice.

Other more important factors will decide.

Having said that I agree a HD feed is overdue.

News Now need to be tidied up before you could give it a HD channel. The tickers look amateur and the content is just a loop of RTÉ TV, plenty of ways to repackage some content, other "News Highlight", it isn't a 24 hour news service in any sense of the word.

Ironically many years ago when Mr Bakhurst was the then Head of News / Deputy Direct general he took a photo of said channel in Dublin Airport, saying how great it was to have the channel in the airport. So I think Executives are all too aware.

Would that tidying up cost much ?

I think the other poster was referring to executives considering doing business in Ireland.

Of course KB being in the business so to speak would be aware.

You should have said Fox News with fake Trump news

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,091 ✭✭✭JDxtra

Yes, it's long overdue an upgrade (again). But I honestly can't believe that RTE don't have the ability to do this inhouse. Kind of embarrassing they have to tender it out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,731 ✭✭✭RoTelly

RTÉ NEWS has a ticker systems for both Business News and Elections, its likely that these are coming from the same software, but someone might be able to verify that.

Also for "live" events RTÉ NEWS NOW has a DOG/BUG like the other RTÉ channels, along with "live update", though never know why they can't produce a news ticker on that screen during those events.

If KB was aware he'd have updated the look of NEWS NOW long ago. He's aware when he wants to be.

Really he should put forward a proposal to add advertising to NEWS NOW rather than a proposal to close the digital radio stations and the +1 channels.

Yes, that's what the OP seems to be talking about executives from abroad, I'd say some notice other probably raise an eyebrow in their head and all move forward.

They weren't allowed have ads on the News channel or the digital radio channels, objections from other media groups, print and broadcasting and the fact of the licence funding. Having said that, I think if you listen to RTE Gold or Radio 1 extra on TuneIn, TuneIn place ads during the broadcasts, I may be wrong but I think there are ads.

I've never heard ads on RTÉ Gold via TuneIn anyway apart from those ads RTÉ Gold used to run for the Toy Show Musical.

RTÉ proposed 2 phases to its role out of the "extra" digital channels.

Phase one : RTÉjr 5 days, with +1, NEWS NOW no ads

Phase two : RTÉjr 7 day, with +1 replaced by RTÉ PLUS (aka THREE), potential to add ads to NEWS NOW

This was the initial proposal the minister sought view of the public and stakeholders as under the act.

Minister Carey only gave permission for phase 1, but not to phase 2.

A second proposal was put in to extended RTÉ 1 +1 to 24 hours, one for OTV, another for RTÉ2 +1

And one withdrawn one about RTÉjr.

RTÉ have just put in a proposal to axe the Digital Radio stations, it is pending a decision. They were due to close at the end of the year, RTÉ will fail to meet this target.

RTÉ could put forward a proposal to ask permission to add advertising to RTÉ NEWS NOW if they wanted.

Digital Radio Stations pre-date 2009 act and were part of the "test" DAB service and competitors asked for RTÉ not to have ads on their digital radio stations, I wonder if RTÉ could start airing ads on the digital radio stations without putting in a proposal much in the same way has they have done with RnaG?

    Yes, pretty much - there's often execs in hotel or office lobbies waiting on cabs to take them to Dublin airport;

I was in a corporate reception recently with one where we were both standing up close to a very large screen TV running RTE news which is what made me think about it… and yes, it probably makes little impact, but it's not a good showcase for RTE….

Although worse was when VM were showing live rugby last year!

Had an ad today when the stream started, lost signal for a second and then another ad. Disappointing.

I noticed yesterday that they were running pre-roll RTE Gold jingles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 127 ✭✭Aidan McCarthy

Hi. When they roll jingles RTE Gold Means Christmas songs are going to be playing

Here is more information on the Irish broadcast media. The Republic of Ireland looks set to join European countries including Italy and Germany in developing a DVB-I solution as part of a future transition from regular broadcast to streaming TV. You can read more about plans for free-to-air platform Saorview on the EBU website. UK broadcasters have opted to go a different way with the HbbTV OpApp Freely
