If you type this into an app called ssiptv on any smart tv it will give you Samsung tv plus channels the same as if you bought a Samsung tv.

Not all smart televisions have that app ssiptv because I try it on my television and its not available but it only available on Samsung televisions

You can use most other IPTV apps.

The quality of the streams on some of these FAST channels is amazingly good, especially when you consider it is free (supported by ads). Check out the Pluto TV streams in addition to the Samsung ones. It really puts it into perspective how poor the Saorview broadcast quality is in comparison.

Yes, many FAST channels are pure drivel, but some aren't too bad.

Saorview could do better. However, they don't seem to have the appetite (for a variety of reasons and restrictions I guess). At this stage, it'll just become obsolete if left as-is.

Only hope for it's future beyond next few years is if that they pursue IPTV streaming options - and combine the service with FAST or other free to stream channels.

DVB-I is the future, it will eventually replace DTT. Italy plan using it as a backup to their DTT and satellite service.

Will this make current kit obsolete?

Expecting people to invest money in new equipment just to watch RTE worked in 2010-2012 but it's not going to work again. Many if not most people would rather go without. Pure streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV, etc. "just work" (something you could never say about RTE's online half-efforts).

I certainly won't be forking out to upgrade Saorview kit again, we barely ever watch RTE as it is.

The final transition could be 10 years away with DVB-I incorporated into products long before that.

Look at the similar service in the UK, freely, although not DVB-I, they have opted for HbbTV OpApp. Their basic service has launched with only 2 TV manufacturers iirc but others are on the way and no end in sight for Freeview DTT.

I see Vestel are listed in RTÉs DVB-I testing from the picture above. As they manufacture many of the branded TV chassis now we should see DVB-I incorporated sooner rather than later .

There is a big radio communications conference in 2031 that will most likely decide the future of terrestrial broadcasting in the 2030s.

In 10 years time terrestrial broadcasting will be all but dead - this is the last hurrah for it. Some stations already gone online only, more will follow

I could see that RTE player is on channel 9 but what about the two other players like virgin media player and TG4 player and I see there is two other channels are coming to saorview. One channel ESPN on channel 14 and TLC on channel 18 or 19

Probably, traditional broadcasting will be IP delivered via fibre, 5G/6G to all types of devices including TVs, STBs, mobile and streaming devices using the DVB-I interface.

Not restricted by bandwidth or LCN limitation.

It's a solution for delivering live, linear and on-demand television, also interactive, accessibility, content guides, media libraries, pop-up channels, playlists, box sets, radio services, even subscription services are all possible through DVB-I integration.

RTÉ were testing HbbTV, hybrid broadcast broadband, LCNs 50/51. Brief appearance in the 30s too.

OTT is probably the only place we'll see any additional channels.

I wonder what's the closest you could get over broadband delivery v's terrestrial broadcast you could get for a live broadcast event. Id say currently it's 30 seconds plus at best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,102 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

Nope - even now you see stations release a whole season on demand and then weekly on terrestrial - yes there is a cohort who like to consume weekly but the majority is I want it all Now!

Going fully delivered over the internet while providing the same service is not going to cut it

In 20-30 years terrestrial broadcasting will be dead (probably way before that) based on current viewing habits. teens and twenty somethings are more interested in doom scrolling tik tok or twitter than watching something on RTE

Even on this thread there is the opinion that saorview is chasing a dead horse, trying to innovate with a saorview box or app is a pointless endeavour - the internet is there and just use it

No traditional linear broadcaster is going to invest in its own demise. The broadcasting industry in Europe is gearing up for a transition to IP delivery of its traditional linear services combined with on-demand, interactive etc., a hybrid future.

For this is the reason we're seeing the development of hybrid delivery technologies like HbbTV and DVB-I for use over fibre/5G as traditional broadcasting spectrum is reallocated.

What happening now is in preparation for the predicted outcome of WRC-31 and the decade after.

This is just a proof of concept. There is no guarantee that ESPN or TLC will launch on Saorview. I remember a DTT trial many years ago for what eventually became Saorview had Sky Sports on it. While hopefully this hybrid version of Saorview can bring more channels/services I wouldn't be surprised if it launched with the current channel lineup. All channels in HD would be nice though and hopefully this can be achieved through the streaming side of things.

I spent a lot of money on my current TVs and don't intend to replace any of them within 10+ years. I also have a Raspberry Pi / TVheadend setup for Saorview on my wifi network, but if I was starting from scratch now I don't think I'd bother, there's next to no compelling content on Saorview which renders the question of how the services are delivered, irrelevant.

Like the transition to Saorview from analogue there will always be adapters available to transition without having to replace perfectly good TVs.

I assume there is still a few analogue only TVs out there with a Saorview STB attached 12 years later, in spare rooms, bedrooms etc.

What you're seeing there is the DVB-I test interface. RTÉ Player has been allocated LCN 9, when you select 9 on your r/c it will launch the RTÉ Player. This is to demonstrate the capabilities of DVB-I.

OTT channels, streaming services etc. can all be added as an LCN on the DVI-I guide and you can seamlessly move between the different services without launching other applications.

While DTT remains available it will access the channels from there or directly via IP. For example VM1 could move to IP only but still retain LCN 3.

I noticed RTE Player (on Sony Android TV) has had live channels option added.

RTE One, RTE2, RTEjr, RTE News available. Looks like at least one more channel still to be added.

(catching up with TG4 & virgin media players)

    How old is that image?

    Where does it come from?

From IBC2024 last week, it's the only footage I could find of Saorview's proof of concept. I was honestly expecting more since it's been a year since they first showed off DVB-I

I don't have the RTE player on channel 9 on my television. I just checked it now. What is showing on my television is test card

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 124 ✭✭Aidan McCarthy

I saw that the other night but would like to know What? 's the picture quality is like on the RTE player with the live channels

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,029 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

And you won't ever have on your current TV. As I said above that is a test screen for a new interface that'll replace the current DVB-T interface, it's probably a few years away.

The DVB-I standard hasn't been finalised yet.

Somebody was motivated to get that STB and pay for it.

    That won't happen again.
