Today I seen the most bizarre sight. The gardaí were pulling cars driving illegally on the contraflow bus lane on sarsfield road. Had to pinch myself. I can't remember the last time I seen an enforcement, must have been when the college green bus gate started

Haha!! Truly bizarre. In defense of the guards, I've seen them doing this maybe 4 or 5 times in the last year or so. Not very often, but probably at least as much as I've seen a speed van, and definitely more than I've seen breathalyzer tests..

I see they've updated one of the real time displays on Abbey Street. It looks much clearer.

Is there a button on a pole I see, or something else?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭lordleitrim

Yes, if you press it, the due bus disappears. A lot of people in Dublin obviously press it.....

Audio announcements for visually impaired I'm guessing

00:30 & 01:30 from Connolly serving all stations to Greystones

Wasn't expecting these for the 5th-7th, will certainly be making use.

Would probably be a good idea to expand the night service on rail and Luas to every Friday and Saturday night now at this stage.

I'm fairly sure track works would be given as an excuse, but yes, they should.

Do night trains operate back to city as normal or are they out of service?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,936 ✭✭✭dublinman1990

I think the night trains do return out of service although I'm not sure on that one. Do the late night Darts from Connolly to Greystones return to the layover at the sidings at Bray to begin the t/t for the following day's service or does it go back as an out of service train to Fairview Depot. The only snag in this arrangement is that there will be no E-Spine buses in operation in Dun Laoghaire & Bray until after Christmas. I wonder how the rail passengers will feel about it once they are making their journey home after getting off the Dart from these stations.

So, did cancelling the latest phase of the BusConnects roll-out pay electoral dividends for the people who pushed it/agreed to it?

And, does the (near) demise of the Greens mean that BusConnects might be for the chop (if we end up with a government dependent on the Rural Independents who won’t care about spending money on buses in Dublin or any other city)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,259 ✭✭✭Daith

BusConnects didn't start with the last Government. Amazing how many people think transport projects don't happen unless the Greens are in play.

I'd say Gannon and Rory Ahearn in DubNW benefited a bit from the 11 stuff

I know that BusConnects didn’t start with the last government.

However the Greens which had continuing to fund it as one of central campaign themes got hammered. That's a pretty clear rejection from the electorate.

On the other hand, the more “anti-Green” rural independents are back in force. They may well demand, as part of propping up a new government, that the money earmarked for projects such as BusConnects be diverted to their pet projects instead.

And, let’s face it, it is taking so long to deliver BusConnects that most people would probably shrug their shoulders if it is shelved since few believe that public transport will be revolutionised when it is finally rolled out years (or even decades!) from now.

Well, it was FG and FF that signed up to binding legal targets through the EU, so any government will face the likely prospect of fines from the EU if they fail to meet those targets. Considering that we're likely to miss those targets even with the efforts of BusConnects, Dart+ and Metrolink, I'd think that further investment in public transport is more likely than less, regardless of what any political group think.

Is there a big cost involved in the rest of the BusConnects project? Sure, some infrastructure work and perhaps more (new) buses? I'm not seeing a scenario where the new government will announce "sorry, we can't continue BC because Danny Healy-Ray hates buses".

The infra stages are only in the planning or post-planning-pre-tender stage now; they will all cost money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,810 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

Not a hope of it being dropped.

It’s the only agreed way forward and all parties have accepted that.

I don’t see the election result as anything that would impact on the rollout. All parties back the investment.

Nine infrastructure schemes out of planning now are not suddenly going to be dropped.

The issues with the latest network phase are not that difficult to resolve let’s be honest - extending one route southwards to the south city centre and increasing frequency on other routes where necessary.

Just needs a bit of give and take from everyone and especially the NTA.

Any rumours on potential dates for E Spine in the new year yet ?

Seems to have gone quiet since the postpone statement, granted there was an election in tbe pipeline

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,810 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

They’ll let the dust settle on the election first I would suspect.

there was someone on the Bray FB page claiming it was moved to April, could be bs though.

Wouldn't be surprised, to be honest. The formation of a new government could go on for an extended period, with plenty of issues raising their head in the negotiation between the various parties. NTA purposely keeping their head down might be the smart play on this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,688 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

or, they should go ahead with it while politicians are in a post-election mood. It's a few bus routes, not a defence treaty and it's 99% likely to be a continuation of FF/FG anyway.

End of January at the earliest is what I've heard

might match up with the O then, but we've seen no plans at all for the O infra works. Since the next Transport Minister wont be Green ( unless something crazy happens) then funding for the BC infra may get long fingered even though it may be through planning. And yes, parties did sign up but that was the last government … and all that matters is the new Programme for Government.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,810 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

I really don’t see delaying the investment in infrastructure is an option for any government.

The cost to the economy of the extended journey times is too great.

We know that the NTA are working on the basis that works on two CBCs will start construction in 2025 and I really don’t see that changing.

And given the way this country is run not an option means it might just be a possibility for them
