If there were any real FFers left they'd be licking their wounds now,

Who are the real FFers and what do they stand for?

That would be a treble negative. I said could not refuse.

The FG vote in Donegal saved the FF Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue and also got them over the line in a few other constituencies. Other than SF trying to create mischief I haven`t heard any of the FF T.D.`s say they have a problem with the rotating Taoiseach or that they have any notion of going back to the country on it.

Averil is separated from Fionan nearly as long as from FF…

They usually stick a notice on the ballot box about the ring being inside. Then count staff can set it aside and return to owners. When they open on count day.

It happens almost every election somehow

I’ll make a bold prediction and say we’ll never see a non FFG government in our lifetimes.

Funny, considering the benchmark you used for years here was the 2020 GE.

Now the benchmark is the locals…..

Apologies. I should have said she was married to Sheehan, but wasn`t she gushing about him and them still being good friends not long ago.

When are we going to face the reality that Michael Martin was by far the most credible option as Taoiseach and the electorate knew it? The leaders debate was a turning point and the result reflects that. Martin's staying power has blocked SF's route to govt for more than a decade.

MLMD just doesn't have it. As for Carthy as a possible replacement, get real. He's an even bigger spoofer than O'Broin

Think in Ireland with the left in particular there's too many groups. Lab will get about 10, SD maybe 12 and Greens now have a serious rebuild job. Individually they'll never get the numbers to be more than a 3rd party in government. Somewhat true with the right as well, if you combined right leaning Independents with Independent Ireland and Aontu you'd actually have some sort of bloc to work with. But we have too many small parties to ever challenge FF and FG.

    And so it played out.

I couldn`t get where the media saw McConalogue in trouble with two FG candidates with fair sized votes below him as well as where transfers were likely to go based on geography.

SF also helped him out by putting Jordan next door to Pringle attempting to take him out and then not using the vote they got in the north of the county to help Jordan out.

Very poor vote management where SF got 42% of FPV as opposed to FF`s 24% and both end up with 2 seats.

SDs have no candidates left in the running and have 11.

Labour are also going to get 11, realistically - still counts/recounts going on but they're not changing.

Wrong. The next crisis will knock FF/FG out.

Not permanently of course - FF, the Greens and now Labour prove that Irish parties bounce back. But for long enough to give us a different government and perhaps even a fundamental political re-alignment. If the crisis is deep and enduring, it could eventually create an alternative political reality which is unimaginable now, just like we got an FF/FG coalition with rotating Taoiseach - something that was inconceivable before the Crash.

I don't know when the next crisis will hit. Trump might do it or it might be, once again, some obscure corner of the financial markets.

But it will surely happen in our lifetimes (alternatively - my condolences!)

As has been said many times, he makes so many calls he always gets a few right.

There wasn't a big FF bounce anyway, not based on FPV's.

At this stage they have shrunk down to the point that they need to coalesce to stay in power. That was a big deal in 2020. Now it's just accepted. Their voters are transferring heavily to one another now as well. They are for all intents and purposes a single party now. They can stay in power for as long as the economy doesn't crater.

This all reminds me so much of 2007. Back then it was FF on their own who were dominant. Now it is FF-FG together. Back then they were over-reliant on the stamp duty from houses. Now it's the tax receipts from a few massive companies. In both elections parties from all sides were outdoing each other to promise to spend more and more. Independent voices were calling for restraint but they were roundly ignored.

If there is a recession and especially if house prices drop their voters will lash out. The left-wing opposition need to get their act together and be ready to present a viable opposition coalition, in a way that they did not in this election. That begins by Labour not going into government now to prop up FF and FG.

42% in a 5 seater is 2 seats unless you get transfers elsewhere, but in Donegal there is no other left vote than SF so little other transfers to be got for them.

The reason FF got 2 in on 24% is because FGs 10% transferred heavily to them, which didn't really leave enough vote for 2 INDs to get in, so Ward won and Pringle lost.

I was going to make this exact point. There will be a recession at some stage in the future, that much is for sure, and with a recession comes a reduction of wealth and money in peoples pocket.

SF need to get their act together over the next 5 years that they are taken as a credible coalition partner. Soc Dems have a great base to build from, and if they can build from this election, there is no reason they can't look for 20+ seats come 2029 (or sooner)

Soc Dems and Labour should keep their respective powders dry, stay out of government now at all costs and be ready next time round

What the election proves is that people are looking at policies from parties and looking for options

Maybe what people are missing here is that SF are incompetent

Hopefully another party will be able to step up and give people a better alternative becuase SF certainly are not that

TikTok is awash with video today now of people complaining because of the election

Based on the % rates I think a lot of the people complaining on TikTok didn't actually vote

Also they should be aware, the stupid over the top videos after the US election should not be copied. Don't be such a dumbass that you think they are cool. The World was laughing at the US, don't have them laughing at Irelamd

I missed pretty much all the coverage at the weekend but did Stanley call ML a liar while live on air? Could he find himself before a real judge if so i wonder

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,748 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

I don't think anybody in the country thought a SF + FF coalition or FFG were the choices on offer to be fair. Certainly in the main transfers would suggest FFG were transferring each other and Labour and SF voters were transferring to PBP and SD. SF more transfer friendly than Aontú and other right wing loons but that shouldn't be the benchmark for any party

From what I saw, young people here more interested in the american election sadly.

SF FF has always been SFs only route to power in this election.

Some of us have been saying that for well over 12 months, perhaps 2 years.

There could be a move back toward SF from FF, once MM and MLMD are out of the picture, but for now its FFG, as per predictions from a long time ago.

FF have been kingmakers in this election since the day after the 2020 election.

I think this is true. It’s also the case that, whatever you think about SH, he had his facts to hand in the debate. MM did well as the no BS straight talker but MLMD waffled quite a bit. SF overall weren’t able to produce credible sounding policies. I think if things like the US election had gone differently and the world was a bit calmer voters might not have cared as much. We’re likely headed into a period of uncertainty so a group like FFG with credible sounding policies and a track record of steering the country through turmoil looked more attractive. FF do seem to have gotten rid of the Haighey and Bertie types in recent times. I think they’ve done well overall and worked well with FG so I think they’ve done same view is held by voters in general.

Siad you couldn't believe a word out of MLMD mouth, then RTE stopped him as they are already in the legal sitation with MLMD

Oh I expect he will be sued, his wife as well for revealing the details of the SF watsapp group.

Sure SF might as well sue everyone that didn't vote for them as well while they are at it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,037 ✭✭✭BlueSkyDreams

The anti immigration challenge is real for SF; but it is not playing out for FFG in terms of FPV.

FFG have held their ground since 2020, its only SF and the Greens that have dive bombed and need to find new votes.

FFG jist need to maintain, as they have done this election.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,088 ✭✭✭Clo-Clo

MLMD was waffling as soon as her mouth opened, she couldn't answer a question and could only fire out prewritten statements which I guess she wanted for social media

The US election had nothing to do with the Irish election

😂 Fair play to him, he must have been full of adrenaline as very unlike a politician to come out with them kind of allegations/words

SH by far had the worst campaign, Probably the worst in living history. Precipitated a fall from 27% to 20,5% in a couple of weeks. But thanks to FF he'll be back in government and incredibly, likely to be Taoiseach again.

You couldn't write it, to be perfectly honest.

At least he got a viral TikTok out of it.
