Yep I'll second the syncEv, has worked flawlessly for me. I got the untethered version as I usually only charge every 10 days and didn't want a cable hanging off it which the neighbours kids would start messing with

    Thanks both.

Has anyone any experience of using this charger with Solar panels and any views? On the face of it, I can't find any reason to pay an extra 350 for the Zappi. Thanks again.

Just wondering on this. I am engaging a scheduled charge every night by swiping the app. Need it to charge from 2am to 5am. What way are you controlling it yourself? I tried the scheduled rule but it seemed to fail one night - but maybe I need to try again. But I thought I had tried to control with the car to start at 2am but then I couldn't see how to get the app to be ready to go when the car schedule kicked in. Hence wondering your approach!

    Thank

Just in general if you are getting paid to export excess solar from your electricity provider then it does not make financial sense to charge from solar instead fill up at cheap night rate. Export prices may drop to nothing in a few years like they have in the UK. Zappis do seem to give issues, especially certain batches from time to time. It's hard to compare the two unless you have both types.

Yep, makes perfect sense but all depends on cost differentials, now it makes sense to not have an EDDI, maybe not have a battery and export like hell. This time next year the table could turn and it will be retro EDDI installs and ripping out inverters for Hybrid etc.

Hard to see that happening. The UK power market is hugely different, there are times when electricity is almost free with some providers like Octopus.

OK - I don't have a nighttime tariff, so I do not use scheduled and just plug in anytime it suits instead. But I know that once the car reaches my set charge level (80%) it stops charging but the charger is still in an 'active - paused' state with the LED flashing blue. So you should be able to set a schedule on the car and then create a rule on the app to enable charging immediately. Then plug it in and it should flash blue until the car enables the schedule. Not sure if this is what you have done or you are trying to use the Monta app to set the schedule.

To set the rule, go into 'Chargers' on the app, then click the cog wheel for settings. In there is 'Charging Rules'. Create an immediate charge rule. See the guide below.

    https://monta.com/en/help-center/create-charging-rules/

If it doesn't work, let me know and I can test on mine.

Thanks. Will mess around at weekend when not as big an issue if it fails to charge overnight etc.

We copy the UK system, just about 10 years later. Our electricity pricing can change every 3 minutes, just no one offers dynamic pricing to Irish residential customers., yet.

The amount paid for export today is crazy, not sustainable but a good reason to not need a smart EV charger, not need an eddi to heat hot water and not need a home battery. That said it all depends on price and actual cost to get these things in.

Agreed, and dynamic import tariffs are coming next year too. Dynamic export tariffs probably not too far behind.

Cheers. I'm onto one of the providers who are suggesting the Zappi or Ohme if I want solar integration. I don't have solar Pv yet but want to keep options open.

They tell me the Sync Ev is not solar compatible even though the manufacturer states it is.

    Bit confusing..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,508 ✭✭✭Nigzcurran

My supplier told me the sync was solar compatible if I ever got solar in the future. It definitely said it on the paperwork

    I has assumed the same.

    From the website :

    • Integrated SolarCharge  - Integrated SolarCharge enables you to charge from your solar panels, leveraging your surplus green energy whilst also reducing charge costs

Thanks folks, think this supplier is possibly just pushing the Zappi.

Are you guys happy with the Sync Ev wall box 2? Any regrets in not going for a more featured model (like the Zappi)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,508 ✭✭✭Nigzcurran

I think the sync does everything the zappi can do. Seems to have plenty of options on the app

Perhaps the supplier wants to link up with something they are familiar with? Or could there be a compatibility issue with the model(s) of inverter they use?

I'm the other way around, I have Solar and now getting a car charger. I'm going with the same supplier as I want a one stop shop if there's any issues. Don't want the Solar guys saying it's the charger setup or the charger guys saying it's the solar setup. I want to ring one place and say "it's all yours, sort it"

Ok - I tested this and it works. With a schedule set, it was as I thought - the charger flashes blue in a ready state but not charging. As the schedule kicks in, set on the car, the Sync EV starts to supply charge and continues to either the % level you have set or the end of the schedule window.

    ^^^
I see there is a firmware update for the BG SyncEV 2.

BG Sync EV Wall Charger 2 (7.4kW Release Notes)
    25/11/2024
    Update 7kW V1.x to V1.05
    1 Improved Connectivity
    2 Improved Charger Response Time
    3 Minor Bug Fixes

Looks like this is the way to go. Have the rule on the charger to start charging immediately on being plugged in. With rule on the car to charge from 2am to 5am to 80%. And working like that.

    Thanks a mill!

I don't think there's an option to do that. I just noticed it tell me in the app and I had to manually install it.

Anyone aware of any black Friday deals on EV chargers?

Nope. You're probably going to have to go around all the websites. Google is no help, just goes looking around the UK and US.

Thanks. I spoke to epower, seem good but they are a fair bit more expensive vs Fokearn.. But from some of the reviews here, Fokearn work looks a bit sloppy. Anyone else worth trying?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,508 ✭✭✭Nigzcurran

Just to clarify on the work Fokearn did in my house, the charger install itself was an excellent neat job but it was just the interior work that was a let down. Nothing major but just sloppy finishing that could have easily been done right

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭godzillaess

Yeah, but to be fair, I think looking neat from outside is the easy bit.. Its the inside work that takes a bit of effort to keep looking seamless. Leaving a sloppy job inside would do my head in, having to look at it every day! They are supposed to be professionalls and we are paying for a professional job at the end of the day. Just my own view.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 482 ✭✭TheSunIsShining

On the one hand they seem to be beyond willing to install connecting from the cabinet - i.e. they don't seem to insist on connecting to the consumer board which eliminates internal work for many people. They didn't even set foot inside my house to look at the board.

On the other hand, when they connected to my cabinet, they weren't willing to put the charger anyone other than right next to the cabinet which means it is very far from the car. In fact if I didn't have the 7.5m EV Synch unit then the charger wouldn't reach the car. I asked to put the unit closer to the car but installer mumbled something about it having to be next to the cabinet - think he just didn't want the hassle of a run of armoured cable as he just used cable inside that flexible ridged tubing to join from the cabinet to the charger and it is only a foot or so in length.

it’s only permitted to be wired from the meter cabinet as a last resort if all other possibilities have been ruled out. Lots of companies wiring to the meter cabinet as standard and taking the easy option. Page 17 of the link
