Ffs, I'd be very concerned about the work you can't see. I hope you said something.

Nope typical Irish reaction of yeah that's a grand job thanks bye! We have had builders in the house for the last few months that made a mess of a few things and getting them back numerous times to fix things became more stressful than the issues themselves. Just glad to see the back of all tradesmen for a while because they would drive you nuts with their poor workmanship

Sad, but true. All too often the standard of work is just shoddy and it’s not because of people going with the cheapest quote.

I had solar panels installed this year. They left the cables hanging loose under the panels, touching the roof. No end caps were installed and the panels were misaligned.

I had them come back to tidy the cables which they needed me to direct them with 🫣.

The alignment was improved, but I just told them to leave it, that I’d do it myself.
    They installed end caps.

So a few days later I notice they did nothing on the front side of the roof and all the cables there are loose. And they forgot to install end caps on one side. Retards.

I’ve recently discovered that their electricians only installed a new fuseboard suitable for up to 64A when I explicitly asked for an upgrade to accommodate a 100A ESB fuse (16kVa). They did an otherwise tidy job as far as I can tell, but missed the whole point of the upgrade. No reply yet from an email sent a week ago.

Ffs, don't let them away with it. The only way standards improve is if they're held to account.

I'll be making contact again next week. If they don't make good on it, i'll give them a SCC warning and will go from there. It's only the electrical stuff I want/need sorted.

Has anyone got any experience with the EO Mini Pro 3 (Hive)? I switched my electricity to Bord Gais and got an email from them to say they do these chargers as part of their green home upgrades service. I've an EV ordered for 251 and need a charger installed. I was going to go with the Zappi as we've got solar panels due to be installed soon, but open to suggestions of other chargers that might suit also?

100% on that, there's rare exceptions but that's simply the way it is with those crowds, same experiences myself through the years

Only go with Zappi if you are in the MyEnergi eco system. They are not as robust as they used to be.

Wallbox Pulsar has been more reliable in my experience.

I don’t have any sort of ecosystem - total newbie. Hoping to put in a battery at some stage after the solar is done, but that’ll probably be next year by the time we’ve saved up for it.

Does anyone know if we need to wait til the solar is installed before we do the charger, or can we go ahead and get the charger if whoever we get to install it has availability before the solar installer does?

Solar has absolutely nothing to do with an EV charger install. You can get one without the other.

I would go further and say there is currently no overlap at all between Solar and EV from a decision point of view. At the current export rates, you are better off exporting all you surplus solar (rather than diverting it to the EV battery) and seperately charging your EV at a cheap night rate.

Has anyone installed 2 EV chargers in the house?

We now have 2 EVs, and we have 2 narrow driveways on either side of the house, with only space for 1 car in each. We have a Zappi installed in one of the driveways. Rather than trying to mess around with moving cars in order to charge the other, we think it would be a good idea to install a second charger (probably a cheaper one than another Zappi?) in the other driveway so either car can charge wherever it is parked.

To be clear I wouldn't ever want to run them both at the same time, just the ability to not have to worry which car is in the "charging" driveway at any given time. I know you only get the charger grant once too.

I assume there is no problems just installing another EV charger, the same as the last one? The new one is actually much closer to the consumer unit.

    Am I missing anything?

We've two EVs also and after a few years of Tetris I just moved the charge point midway so now it does not matter where or in what direction either car is parked, is that an option for you by chance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 840 ✭✭✭setanta1984

Nope sadly, two driveways are completely separate, different sides of the house and even on different levels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,362 ✭✭✭Sigma101

We had the same issue. We installed a regular 3 pin (13A) outdoor socket for the second car. We now have an EV charger on one side of the house and the outdoor socket on the other. We rarely have to charge both cars on the one night but at least if we do we have the option of using a granny charger. It's so much cheaper than having a second charger installed.

I have, mainly because I got the second one for free! It is handy though.

No problem as long as one of them has load sensing for your whole house, so that it can ramp down if the second one happens to come on at the same time. You have a Zappi already so that should be setup with load sensing (at least it has the ability to).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,032 ✭✭✭Buffman

There won't be any problem installing two with the correct equipment (load balancing as already mentioned), but unless you know a sparks who'll do 'mates rates', you'll be paying a similar install price as your first one without the 'benefit' of the grant.

Do you need both cars charged up for every morning? If not then it'll be an expensive luxury as it's very simple to share the one charger with a small bit of planning by alternating driveways every second night for example, or as others have suggested using a granny charger for supplemental charging as required.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

You can get chargers with dual output that will load balance, or Tesla’s charger allows you to daisy chain up to 4 chargers and will balance the load between them

recommendations for installers in Limerick area?

Priced Ev chargers Ireland and E power and both coming in at 1500 before grant (zappi).

Relatively straight forward install I think.

Fokearn getting recommendations here and in a Facebook group I'm in. No experience personally

I had seen them and thought they were nuts Dublin. Seen their Facebook and they are nationwide.

I used them and no complaints. Very tidy job and they were quick responding to a follow up issue.

I got the guys out of Renew Electrical to do mine. Honestly their install was flawless. Was delighted with their work. They left the place spotless too which is a rear occurrence of today’s tradesmen

Anyone have a bg sync charger?

Ours is throttling back during high loads which is fine. But it doesn't go back up to full rate unless I stop and start the charge session again.

I'll probably set 2 charging sessions to try work around it for now.

    Thanks

Have ours a few weeks now with zero issues so far thankfully

The Sync ev fitted for 750 after grant looks like a good deal..

I was planning to get a Zappi.. Only because at some point in the future I'm planning to get solar Pv.. Is the Sync more or less just as good for this? Or what am I missing, pretty big price difference vs the Zappi.

    Thanks

The SyncEV now does solar PV.

    https://sync.energy/products/ev-chargers

I can't compare to the Zappi but for the price I think it's great. I don't have solar PVs. I've had the unit a month or so and have been very happy with it. The tethered one makes more sense for me as it avoids getting the cable out each time. The app is decent (Monta Charge) - it's more a generic one that isn't explicitly linked to BG SyncEV but supports multiple manufacturers chargers. It has a number of additional options which take some time to work out (if you are so inclined to dig about). Else you could just totally ignore it. Jut turn some or all of the notifications, as they popup for every charge….

First thing I did was add a rule that starts the charge immediately after plug in. If you don't, then you have to swipe "start charge" on the app each time, much like the public charging apps, which is a pain and you can forget…. The reason behind this is that the app is linked to a backend payment system (for the likes of companies to install and then bill for usage) and you 'could' set your charger to be 'public' and charge a fee for KwH usage by others. Obviously you would want to keep it private and hidden from the public chargers map. But it's a nice feature to see offered.

Just let the charging schedule and battery charge limits be controlled by the car as trying to control things via the charger doesn't seem to work as well.

You can also manage the charger via the web which is handy to see the charging sessions, the cost (if you enter your unit rate) and also view the status, reports and logs of the charger (if you want to geek out on stats, firmware versions etc)… https://monta.com/en/monta-hub/ is the way to manage it after you have created an account via the app and linked your SyncEV.
