PS5 Pro thread

There is no PS5 pro thread so thought i'd create one for anyone who pre-ordered.

I sold my PS5 a few weeks ago and have been getting serious withdrawal symptoms so next week cannot come soon enough. I know its not sold out anywhere but does anyone know how it works with Smyths if you pre-ordered but are collecting the console? I've read some differing reports some saying they take payment 2 to 7 days before release and others saying you pay on the day you collect? I just want to make sure i've money on the card if its randomly going to come out in the next few days.

Something weird about a new console release that takes me back to being a kid - i love it :-)

What games are you going to play first? I'm thinking Alan Wake 2 or Silent Hill given the season.

I would have thought if collecting it, you're only charged when you're there to pick it up. If getting it delivered, they'd charge a few days before because at that point it's with the couriers and out of their hands. I'm only guessing though. Maybe check your pre-order confirmation email, it'll likely say on it.

As for what games I'll play on it first, I imagine I'll still be playing Dragon Age The Veilguard by that point, so if anything it'll be a good way of being able to compare the base PS5 to the Pro. Silent Hill 2 is probably on the cards too but I've heard there are performance issues with the PS5 so I want to see if the PS5 Pro resolves that first. Then might do a replay of Demons Souls; still one of the best-looking PS5 games and getting a PS5 Pro boost too.

Edit: Actually, my email confirmation only says the below, so not sure if it clarifies things one way or the other.

When an order is placed all customers receive an order confirmation email. All orders are subject to checks after they are placed. Following these checks customers may receive additional order updates such as cancellations. Payment will only be taken after these order checks have been completed.

Yes that's exactly what i would have thought too that you pay on collection - which suits me better.

I never finished Demon Souls and only recently finished Elden Ring DLC so its a great time to start a fresh Demon Souls game on the pro. I agree it looks amazing and one of the best of this generation on the PS5. I also never finished Spiderman 2 so that will be on the cards too. Too many games not enough time is my problem.

Currently playing Dead Island 2 so most likely will still be playing it when the Pro lands. NMS will get a spin, as will GT7. Really looking forward to that actually as it already looks stunning in performance so the improved graphics on top will be nice. And I mat give Ghost of Tsushima a second spin. Think I did the intro stuff again recently so will be able to jump straight into it.

I see multiple journalists posting images of their pros that Sony have been dropping off so we should start to see lot more coverage of actual hands on in the coming days.

I'm nearly the end of my Red dead redemption 1 play through so I'll have to stick RDR2 on the pro.

I have dragon age and will upgrade zero dawn too. Will have to install all the Sony stuff. GT7, Spiderman, Rachet and Clank, the last of us 1&2. Just to see the improvements.

Ive a 2tb M.2 SSD ready to stick into it too so there's plenty of room.

I had hoped to see some PSVR2 improvements too but my bloody dog chewed the cable. And Don't don't sell replacements. So that's €500 down the drain.

Smyths will issue on email the night before generally after closing time so from 9PM (but I have received them earlier) confirming that your order is ready for collection the following day. They will also preauthorise the charge at this time. When you collect the order they will issue an e-receipt and finalise the charge. If it's not collected within 2 days the order is cancelled and the preauthorised charge is released but they do say it can take a few days to release the preauthorised amount back into your account.

I might have another go at Star Wars Outlaws I did the minimum to finish it but it didn't hold my attention maybe an upgraded version might help me finish the rest? The HZD upgrade might be worth the €10 I also have Burning Shores to start.

    Unboxing Video...

I have mine preordered for home delivery on Thursday

Have been on the fence alot since ordering over the price etc

Was anyone else feeling this way or just me? 😂

But gonna go ahead... gonna sell my launch PS5 to soften that blow 😅

Was able to snag a disc drive in Currys a few weeks back

Have an LGC1 so set up to get the full advantage so not like I need to change my TV or anything like that

Will need to move the 2tb SSD over to the pro aswell but as i've read it can just be moved over with no reformatting required

I had to select the pick up at the store. I couldn't take waiting all day for the delivery 🤣

The initial price shock has long worn off. Now it seems like what you are getting is incredible value.

They real proof will be over the next few months as Devs figure out how to max out pssr and what's going on with game boost for PS4 games.

I hear you on the delivery, Im thinking of changing to to click and collect tbh 😂

Yeah apparently on the settings there is a boost option for PS4 games but how much of a difference it makes, time will tell

I'm not playing a whole pile right now, just started BLOPS6, Life is Strange double exposure & Helldivers but will prob get back to Star Wars Outlaws too to see if any improvement there, was struggling to get into that tbh

I think the big 1 for me that will showcase the Pro will be Assassins Creed Shadows, really looking forward to that 1

Ive already played Spiderman 2 / Horizon and have no interest in going back to them

F1 24 looks amazing in the pro modes. Might pick that up.

But it's the 16.7TF of GPU compute performance that is new information. Sony has not actually given any kind of TFLOPs number for the PlayStation 5 Pro, but prior leaks have suggested around 33.5TF - a somewhat exaggerated number that arrived with AMD RDNA 3 architecture with its dual issue FP32 functionality. Sony's confirmation of 16.7TF suggests that the dual issue FP32 support is not in the PlayStation 5 Pro - not that this is too much of a big deal as it has very, very little impact on gaming performance.

Finally, the specifications confirm that the PS5 Pro has more memory than the base unit - an extra 2GB of DDR5. Leaks have previously suggested that the Pro has an extra 1.2GB of available RAM for game makers, so the likelihood is that system level memory requirements are shunted over to the new memory pool, leaving more of the faster memory for games to use.

I think that extra 2gb of ram will run the OS meaning the full 16 GB can go towards the games.

    Yokes a beast.

I was reading about the teraflop "issue" on reddit basically it seems Sony dropped the dual issue method as it had very little impact on gaming so the 33.4TFlop number which was leaked was the dual issue number but in gaming it never makes much difference so Sony went with 16.7TFlop single issue instead of the 33.4 TF dual precision.

The whole TFlop thing is such a meaningless measurement anyway so its all a moot point really. I cant wait for thursday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,224 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

I can honestly say I've no idea what a terraflop is.

When are ye expecting smyths charge cards / delivery?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,207 ✭✭✭jones

If you're getting it delivered I'm surprised they haven't charged yet but it'll most likely be tomorrow at this stage.

I'm collection and I plan on being there first thing Thursday morning ha

I'm the same, cancelled my preorder for delivery going to collect Thurs 1st thing aswell 😬😂

Is anyone swapping their SSD over, I am just wondering can I just swap it out straight away out of the box or should I power on 1st...

I never had to install a disc drive before either, I hope its straight forward enough 😬

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,224 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

You prob can just stick in the SSD. I imagine the software it ships with is fairy up to date.

I wasn't sure if you moved the m.2 SSD would it format it. But after a bit of digging it appears like you can just put your games on the m.2 and move it over. The new PS5 won't format it. So that's something definitely worth doing.

I think the hardest part of putting in the disk drive is getting the side panel off 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,520 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I think I looked it up a few weeks ago and it said you can just swap it over from one PS5 to the other. It won't format it because it's already been formatted by a PS5.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,224 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Yeah I googled it after writing that. I had a memory of it formatting it, but it must have just been the first time it was put into the PS5.

Super handy as I've 2TB M.2. So the pro will have 4TB of storage now 😃.

I've kept my old 1TB m.2 as well so I'll put that back into the OG PS5. The Kid is mad into the PS5 so now we can play online co op games together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,520 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah I have pretty much every game moved over to my 2TB M.2 so hopefully once the Pro comes I can just swap over rather than having to download games. Might just load up the Pro and get it set up first before installing the M.2 though, just so as not to confuse things.

Looking forward to getting mine brought the Blu-ray drive a few weeks back. I think you will need to use the plastics legs that come with the drive if your going to place it horizontal which I think I will with the pro. It's good you can stick the games on the M.2 and just transfer it across to the Pro as I was sure it would just format the drive for drm reasons.

I think I will power it on and make sure it works and download any updates and then power off and for the M.2 first power it on make sure it's working and then fit the Blu-Ray drive last.

    Got ready for dispatch email

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,224 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Still waiting on my ready to pick up email. I presume it comes after closing today so you don't show up too early.

It's frustrating having to wait another two weeks for the 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro. Two weeks for a lick of paint while ye have all the fun

The one we've been waiting for Digital foundry.

Thankfully the DPD email served as a reminder to me that I forgot to get a vertical stand, so grabbed one on the way home from work.

Smyths just took the pre-order money for the pro. I wasn't expecting it as i assumed i'd just pay at collection but heads up for anyone in the same position as me.
