So how are folks getting on with their Pros? Do you notice any meaningful difference over the standard console or only really with specific enhanced games?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,228 ✭✭✭jones

I love the pro it's basically a playstation 5.5. There are tangible benefits to most of the enhanced labeled games but PSSR is still in its infancy and so not perfect (there has been some shimmering reported in some games) but I expect it to get better and better as Devs get more used to it.

I've finished Spiderman 2, Alan wake 2, astro bot and hogwarts legacy and I'm currently playing Baldurs gate 3 and all have been perfect for me. I've dipped into demons souls, ratchet and clank, elden ring etc to test them and they all look and play great.

Another small thing I've noticed and i don't know if it's a placebo but the home screen interactions seem quicker than base ps5.

All in all I'm very happy with my purchase but it is expensive. I think having a 120hz VRR TV is a must if something is thinking about upgrading their base ps5. If you don't have one I don't know if I could recommend the pro at this price point.

Having the pro has even reignited my interest in the portal which I dismissed initially but remote play seems very good using my phone so I'm tempted.

Appreciate the response @jones, thanks. Was watching some recent videos and PSSR seems to do a decent job once devs implement it properly - the patch for Space Marine 2 for example. Still early days as you say so should only get better. I have an LG G4 so should be ok on the TV front. I'll be holding onto my PS5 so the kids can use it when I'm not on the Pro, guessing I just set that as the Home console so I can still access my PS+ sub on the Pro?

On the Portal, I think I saw mention there's a beta out that allows you to stream certain games on it without taking over main console? Requires PS+ Premium I think.

Not a Beta, I think it was fully released in the last update. If you have PS+ Premium you can stream some games directly to the Portal without connecting to your PS5, about 150 games available. I tried it on a few different games and worked perfectly, even using my saves uploaded to the cloud (eg. Spider-Man Miles Morales).

Oh that sounds pretty good thanks! Had let my PS+ Extra sub expire thinking there might have been a deal during BF but didn't see anything so re-subbed for the year to Premium this time, was only 20 quid in the difference. Upgraded the wifi recently too so getting much better speeds so will do a bit of research on the Portal so. In terms of audio, can you connect headphones to it via bluetooth or is it wired?

Well that's one area I can't support Sony on, and is a real nonsense and scummy move from Sony.

You can use wired headphones/earphones through the audio jack, but for wireless you have to use either the Pulse Elite headphones (not the old Pulse headset, has to be the newer Elite version) or the new Pulse Explore earbuds. Can't connect any other wireless earphones (unless maybe there are ones with a dongle which plug into the audio jack and are wireless from there, not sure).

It means the proper Pulse headset is bought years ago, I can't even use it with the Portal. Would have to upgrade, which is a bit of nonsense to be honest.

Have your account on both consoles, enable console sharing on the PS5 and don't enable it on the pro.

Kids can play games on their accounts while you're playing on the pro.

Very happy with the pro. That's now "my console" and the OG PS5 is the kids.

I've noticed a big difference across the board. Everything just works faster, as you would expect, and games look great. It pretty much delivers on what it promised. The fidelity mode but at 60 not 30 FPS.

Outside of the Sony Devs, I don't think the others have had enough time to really get PSSR to shine. Which does explain why horizon and insomniac games are great and the others need a extra patch or two.

But I can imagine they will do even more over the next 6 months, never mind what they get out of it over the next 3-4 years.

PSSR itself is only the first version too. It's being updated as it learns more.

And we are still waiting on the PSVR2 updates to come along too.

The Portal cloud streaming is great, it's labelled a beta just while they roll it out in case it isn't perfect. But it's pretty dam good. I counted over 200 games too.

For headphones it uses ps link. So the little playstation buds will work with it. But they are expensive and not very comfortable. Sound is great once you find the sweet spot but for lots of use I didn't really like them.

You can use any wired headset via the 3.5mm jack underneath. And if you find a blue tooth transmitter that fits you can hook up to Bluetooth headphones. But the portal itself doesn't support Bluetooth directly.

That's pretty cheeky alright, I have the older Pulse headset too which works fine for the PS5, will just go wired with other headphones so. Although the Portal seems to be sold out everywhere atm anyway so not an issue for now.

Cheers @F1ngers - I'll do that so. Heading up to Smyths in a few to collect it. 🙂

LG G4 you are definitely covered on the TV front 😀. I'm using LG C9 and it's amazing and the G4 is basically the top TV you can buy at the moment.

I really looking forward to see what new games do with PSSR but even more so the pro has definitely got me back into gaming more than I had been, everything just seems smoother. The enhanced games for the main have been very good upgrades. Horizon forbidden west looks like a high end PC game on the pro.

This isn't the PS6 but it's definitely a step up from the standard ps5 with the TV caveats mentioned above.

On the portal headset front. Even the ps5 doesn't connect directly to the pulse or elite. They use a usb dongle which is mad too.

So it got me thinking if I used an adapter to connect the dongle from the pulse to the portal's usb port would it work.

    Sadly not.

Yeah 100% agree not having normal Bluetooth capabilities on the portal screams of a money grab by Sony and let's be honest they have previous.

I'm like others here I've the pulse headset and it works great with the pro but the fact I'd have to buy a separate Sony headphones for the portal was a massive negative.

If I can get the portal for under 200 I probably would so let's see what the new year pricing brings (it's 220 currently).

You're a sales rep for Sony aren't ya? 😁 Is it possible to play Bloodborne on the Portal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,909 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Not via the PS+ Cloud Streaming, but if it's on your PS5 then yes, you can play it on Portal through your PS5.

Quick question folks - can I use the power cable and hdmi from the ps5 on the pro? Would save me having to mess about behind the tv.

So it turns out the HDMI port on the Pro is in the middle of the device rather than towards the bottom (or left if lying on it's side like the OG) - that fact and a combination of the cable routing system on the tv and tv cabinet meant the bloody hdmi cable was too short to reach the port on the Pro. So messing about was unavoidable. 😂

Ended up doing something I should have done when I got the cabinet - drilled holes in the middle of the unit. Much neater now.

Going to download the trials for Black Myth and Stellar blade, see what they're like.

Mine's for xmas so I haven't played anything on it really. I did have to "test" it, obviously so downloaded the free My Gran Turismo, or whatever it's called.

My god the haptics are incredible, really feels like you're holding a car steering wheel. The subtle changes for road surface & engine revs are spookily lifelike.

The old chestnut of PS5 Pro questions ... 😁

Are people still happy with their pros ? Not sure upgrading from a regular PS5 is worth it, but there's a sale on at the moment, 50 quid off. And drive down by 40 quid.

Also, I don't think I've noticed it, but there's a vrr glitch on all PS5 on some games in uncapped high frame rate modes. After a short period of time, the console frame rate stutters every 8 secs. So, I'm definitely not going to pro, which will have many of these high frame rate games as an advantage of pro, if that's an issue.

And I'm concerned about how prevalent noisy fans and coil whine are on pro.

Obviously if you've come from PS4 and/or low end TV to PS5 pro then it'll look great. Kind of interested in hearing from people who went from base PS5 and high end TV to the pro.

Delighted with it . Didn't touch it for months until KD2 came out . But in short glad I bought at launch . Will do same with switch 2 even though dont need it yet .

I went from base PS5 and great TV to the Pro.

I don't really notice any difference visually. I've never really had much of an eye for that anyway, but even then and as per so many of the visual comparison videos of them, you only really notice a difference if you have a side by side comparison.

I think even when marketing the thing, Sony themselves were basically saying you don't really need to upgrade to the Pro. It's a nice to have for those who want the best and have that bit of disposable income, as it does improve the graphics/framerate, but you just might not fully notice it. I'm happy with mine anyway.

I can definitely tell the visual difference in Spider-Man 2 between quality/balanced mode vs performance. Looks incredible.

But I prefer performance over visuals. So, if the Pro gives that level of visuals at 60 FPS then that would be a big win. I know it's on a game by game basis. But, generally that seems to be a consensus.

Also, I'm aware the pro brings in pssr problems if that's not used correctly.

I love my Pro and haven't had any noise issues with it. I did get a brilliant new TV to complement it and also have backlights. Some games like Horizon and particularly Assassin's Creed Shadows look absolutely stunning. Delighted with my change. 😊
