    Hey folks.

Tell me this. New Fortnite download yesterday, son was itching for it all day. See an option now to buy Save the World, for something like 18.50. Is there a catch that it's per month? Or just a one off fee? On the ps5.

I think Save The World was the original version of Fortnite, before it became a free to play battle royale and as popular as it is now. You don't need it as far as I know.

He just asked could he get it. He's put a fair few hours into it, and no trophies to show for it. Both his and my OCD going mad.

AFAIK from when my kids were playing it it's a one time buy.

One of the best feelings in video games: finishing your main story assignment in a Persona game (or, in this case, Metaphor Refantazio) in a few days and having several weeks to do whatever side activities you want at your relative leisure.

It’s liberating when you know you’ve earned the honour and yet the clock is still ticking 😂

The persona games do a good job of making you feel stressed about the in-game time limit yet in reality giving you plenty of time to prepare.

The overarching thing is you’ll never have the time to do everything. You can do a lot (maybe close to all if you optimise), but the friction of restriction makes the whole experience much more engaging.

Yeah, it puts a lot of people off and I've had to tell people that have anxiety about starting the games because of to just accept the fact that you won't complete everything before the end of the game but you will complete enough to finish it. Some people have a thing about being locked out of content but I think it's a great way of making choices really matter, it works a lot better than the binary kill the innocents or be nice choices in say Bioshock (and there's always new game plus).

I hate games like that.(the time limit) My first and only experience of a time based game was Dead Rising. It was annoying as I like to explore when I play games.

Yep lots of people think like you. I mean Persona 3 was a hard sell to myself. A hardcore jrpg with random dungeons, a time limit and dating sim elements. Thankfully i tried it and it's one of my all time favourite games. Anyone that I've convinced to try it has said the same.

It's actually kind of liberating when you just accept that your actions have tangible consequences instead of being annoyed by it and it honestly because a massively compelling game. Used to hate western RPGs until I played some D&D with friends and decided to play them where I would accept the consequences of bad choices and RNGesus and they are so much more fun when approached that way.

I nearly always approach games in a way where I want to complete and experience as much of it as possible. Now, that might change as the game goes on and I end up just wanting to finish it, but I'm very much a "Don't go the way you're supposed to go until it's the only way left that you can go" kind of player. I'll dodge round side paths looting, do side quests etc until I get to the point where I have to progress the main quest. It's also kind of why the storytelling/side-quests in Souls games irk me a little, because without guides you're never really going to be able to follow them all properly and so miss out on content or items or even full endings.

So the idea of the time limit usually puts me off to a degree, simply because it's usually unclear how much you can or could get done in that time limit, and so just feels like an unnecessary wrinkle in feeling like you're forced to do something or not do something. And then chances are you've completed some things too early and then locked yourself out of something else.

I get that in a lot of games you're not supposed to or expected to complete or experience everything in your first go, but a ticking clock just kind of takes that element of freedom away. But then of course the flipside is is that you have to deal with the choices you made and there are definitely benefits to that too.

Yeah, I can totally understand that. I myself like to get everything done in one playthrough so I can move on to the next game. And I'm not saying it's weird to be that way, it's the default mindset for the vast majority of people.

However it's kind of like getting into a cold pool. It feels horrible at first but it's grand once you get in and start swimming. These games are all balanced around the time limit and don't want the player to have a miserable time.

Another game like this is XCom 2 which is very divisive because of the time limits. However once you accept them you realise the time limits make it a much better game as you can't just waste turns setting up overwatch traps and there's always just enough time to finish each mission.

Anyway, TL;DR, the modern persona games are probably the best RPGs in the last 20 years and don't be afraid to try them.

My next Persona got take is that the original Persona 3 battle system where you only had control of the main character is much better and thematically gels better than later games that allow you to control your own characters. Join me for my TED talk.

Balls. That option I had is totally gone now. 😭

The thing to remember about the Persona games (or now Persona-likes with Metaphor) is that ultimately you’re making the choices you have to make in most RPGs anyway - like the specialisations you want to focus on. The whole calendar and day system just means you have to weigh up your choices carefully from moment to moment and decide what to prioritise. It adds an interesting friction, but not in a remotely hostile way - just a different way to think about the systems you’re engaging with, and one more closely tied to the narrative and substories you’re engaging with.

Might be time to reinstall this for some cathartic release:

    I love the Wolfenstein games.

I never played any Wolfenstein games but if they are Jordan approved they must be good. 🧐

I'll vouch for New Order and New Colossus. Great stealth, insane gunplay and surprisingly well written with a lot of heart.

First one was brilliant. I'd actually only redownload it last week while looking for some good old fashioned shooter fun. Second took me a while to get into but ultimately I enjoyed it. Just avoid the spin off with the daughters.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,260 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

The second one is more a stealth game. If you play it like a shooter you'll have a miserable time.

I don't like Kamala either but I won't go as far as to compare her with Frau Engel.

Thought this was pretty interesting; the voice actor for Eva in Metal Gear Solid 3 has finally been revealed to have been Jodi Benson, a prolific Disney voice actress particularly known for Ariel in The Little Mermaid.

She used a pseudonym (Suzetta Miñet) in MGS3 because she worked so much with Disney and was concerned about having an M rated game on her resume.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,522 ✭✭✭RedXIV

That is actually really interesting. She announced it herself or was it revealed by someone?

Death Stranding is now out on Xbox and looks like Kojima has bought the rights to the IP from Sony.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,587 ✭✭✭✭Penn

They revealed it in an interview to advertise MGS3 Delta. She, David Hayter and Lori Alan (The Boss) sat down together to talk about their experience making the game and its legacy.

Apparently her name was one that was guessed at times, but they always denied it.

Play Anywhere support as well, always love when a dev takes the time to support that properly

Got Super Mario RPG on Switch. It's 33 euro on Amazon at the moment. Never really got into turn based RPGs. Maybe this will get the ball rolling. I did try Secret of Mana years ago and made two mistakes ... not completing it and selling the SNES.

One thing ... It's not available for PS5 Pro. 😁

Super Mario RPG is a good beginner RPG. It really very simple but it being very short means it ends just before it starts to get full. There's way better turn based RPGs out there.

As for Secret of Mana, after playing it recently I'm in the it's overrated camp. The best thing about it is that it's 3 player so you and your two nerdiest friends can play it. The music is excellent and it looks great but it's also kind of dull, the combat never gels, the magic system is broken and it's very obviously rushed and buggy.
