Looks like everyone's favourite PS4 game... hope he has plenty of fuel for that bike!

What is it with the US obsession of wanting to go back to wild west times ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,586 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

The full Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack is amazing. So many styles of music from classical to space opera to reggae. Absolutely timeless in a timeless game.

Keep meaning to see what the Switch version is like and if the Wii remote controls translate ok to the pro controller.

My biggest bug bear about video game ignorance is that many many people bought a Wii back in the day and don't even know Super Mario Galaxy exists. There even is/was a cheap Nintendo selects version.

The Dragon Age reviews seem to have broken the internet’s stupidest people in new and unique ways.

Not only have they conjured up and shared a blatantly fake NDA to try to ‘prove’ all the reviews are ‘bought’ and part of ‘the WoKe CoNsPiRaCy’, but they also seem to be suggesting a whole other layer of conspiracy because several reviewers used the extremely commonplace phrase… ‘return to form’.

It’d be hilarious if it wasn’t so utterly pathetic. But real people are getting harassed because of this horseshit, all for the crime of reviewing a video game.

Anyway, here’s MrMattyPlays and Colin Moriarty (no stranger to culture war guff) responding to Grifter-in-Chief’s latest hateful grift:

My bug bear is people saying the Wii or Nintendo sucks when Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 exist.

Hard to believe the man is nearly 60 years old and still lives his life this way.

And his "game" still looks like something I could throw together in unity over a weekend.

I could write a better fake DNA than that, and I can't even spell DNA!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,370 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

That's hilarious. They think an NDA is written like a legal document.

It's basically a one line with a tick box you press to get your code. Something like you agree to abide by the conditions set out in the review guideline. 🤣

But I don't take it as seriously when it's given an anime veneer. Like, yes, your message about discrimination is fair but my mind is pre-occupied with upgrading equipment and deciding which character to romance.

I'm still unpacking, setting up my gaming corner/man cave of my new house but I'm very excited to break out my wii again after a number of years in storage. I never even got to play Mario Galaxy 2 when I bought it! That and the last story are two game on my upcoming backlog to tackle for the wii!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,109 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

That's two great games there. Mario Galaxy 2 does the impossible and manages to somehow one up the first game.

Last Story I absolutely adored and wished there was more of it. The battle system is really unique. There's stealth, cover based systems, parkour but the meat of it is you kiting enemies into the damage areas of your mages. It's just so unique and fun. The setting is really good as well. The entire game is set around a small hub city but it's packed with charm and detail. It really feels alive. The coliseum side quest is one of the funniest things in any game. I also love team. It's very subversive of JRPG tropes where instead of a teenager growing stronger you are part of a mercenary band that are in their late 20's and have known each other for years. There's a great dynamic between them.

It all makes up for an unfortunately rote main story.

Have my own Wii set up again and ready to go and can't wait to get stuck into Sin and Punishment 2 and Pandora's Tower.

Talking about Wii's. I had one since near launch and only played a couple of games on it. The two Mario Galaxy games and a couple of the party games. My switch is the same. Mario Odyssey, Captain Toadstool and a small bit of BOTW. Never to be seen again same as I did with the Wii.

That's known as a SMG OMG ! I really only played a small number of games on Wii/WiiU. And stuff has been ported to Switch.

I definitely think the Switch is the best Nintendo console ... except ...

They need to reinstate the motion sensor bar and Wii controllers which gives the best pointer functionality next to a mouse on a console. And it's very cheap technology. I can't understand why this was dropped considering the absolute glut of shooters out there, and some making tons of cash.

They need to let us buy SNES etc games on the eshop instead of renting them.

Has anyone actually ever played these games? For years now the only function they serve to me is when I see it on the PS store, then I know I've scrolled too far in the deals section and need to turn back.

It has a serious EuroJank vibe to it in the trailers I've watched and the protagonist looks like Aldi Lara Croft but the Wiki page say it has a generally positive reception and Metacritic puts the latest game at 81% so that's good and it stretches back to 1999 so it must have a dedicated fanbase. Peculiar little series.

The first one is a classic point and click adventure. The second was a good follow up. I have the third but not played it yet.

I suppose if you weren't into the genre at the time they can come across as janky.

Remember years ago a lot of people were looking for ways to play these games when they were unavailable to buy. One of those games that more people than you expect have played.

The sublime new Sean Baker film Anora is in cinemas now, and can’t recommend it highly enough.

However, it does alas feature what might be the worst fake video game playing I’ve ever seen in a film. Incoherent, baffling mashing of buttons while playing Gears of War. Even by the low standards of fake video game playing, this is on another level.

Tried the Monster Hunter Wilds beta on PC and while it seems to hover between the 45-60 mark (apparently the case for many higher spec rigs too) it feels a lot more responsive than the PS5 version and looks notably better thanks to DLSS. Still has some fundamental issues - iffy textures, a slightly muddy look overall - but the image doesn’t feel as unstable and fragile as it does on PS5. You can see what they’re going for a lot more, especially with the new weather and environmental effects.

That said, some people are having hilariously bad graphical glitches on PC, so definitely a lot of optimisation work to be done before release.

Didn't they come out and say the current build is much better than the beta build. I would hope so but still plenty of time to optimise...... hopefully

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,109 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Wonder what's causing the poor performance. MHW and Dragons Dogma 2 seem to be very much CPU limited so even a 4090 won't power through it.

Yeah it is a beta to be fair and there’s several months to optimise. Still, first impressions are first impressions - and my immediate response to the PS5 build was ‘wow this looks truly awful and doesn’t feel great either’. At least in its current state PC should fare better - responsiveness and image clarity was night and day difference.

Not having a minimap rotation setting in this day and age, Metaphor, really?

Do you think MH is aiming for PS5 Pro?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,586 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

Are base PS5 games going to be left unoptimized now, because devs will just optimise for PS5 pro ? Did that happen with PS4 Pro ?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 31,110 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

I very much doubt it. I just think they’re stuck with an engine that can’t quite do what they need it to on most hardware - or needs some extra time to get there (which they have, to be fair).

RE Engine scaled down fantastically for MH Rise though. Shame it seems to struggle on these more ambitious next gen titles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,370 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

I can't imagine so, the main player base is on OG PS5. So they will continue to push that (which I feel has more potential). The pro just gives them additional head room to include some of the compromises they had to make.

The difference between the pro 5 and the pro 4 Is the 5 has been in the plans since launch. So games already have configs in the code. With the 4 Devs didn't realise what it was going to be so I actually think it went under utilized.

I still wish Xbox would release a Xbox Series XT.

First few screenshots of the PS5 Pro PS4 Game Boost setting are showing up online. This is the system wide setting so it doesn't need any dev work. You just turn it on and It makes them look better with some upscaling through image post processing I'm assuming.

It seems to clean up the image alright, but doesn't give you a frame boost like Xbox does unfortunately.

Bloodborne image in the slider here, but I can't tell if it looks cleaner or if it's just the fog isn't in the same place in the "enhanced image".
