Not really, not with an election campaign 2 weeks away. Expect a whole slew of acquisition and capital investment announcements at photo ops coming to a town near you.

Radar? Ask again by 2028 maybe…

MRV? sure we have to have a study of the report on the review of the discussion of the tender…. Ask again next decade….

Fighters? We are not a military nation…

MATS? End of the year, no problem, this is an emergency!

I’m sure DOD has had a letter made up stating that it will never be flown somewhere where it might actually get fired on.

Probably old news for most but was looking at the air corps video of the visit to RAF Lossiemouth  for the meeting about providing SAR support between both the Air Corps & RAF for the north atlantic were the air corps captain mentions the Transport Casa will be here in summer 2025!

    Long way away….

The Sunday Times reports today on the costs of hiring in air transport for the Taoiseach over a six-month period. Obviously, the statement that the Learjet has been out of action since late 2023 is not accurate. (I was able to access although not a subscriber.)

For an aircraft that is according to the media parked up a lot and has so many issues it seams to do alot of flying it was even flying last week.

ah well, no doubt the same paper will be screaming about how much the replacement costs when it’s ordered in the next few weeks.

So that's a half million for 6 months , does that include everything? Crew, maintenance ect ,ect ,

Because if the entire ministerial transport bill came in a million a year with no capital outlay , no staff training, wages or pensions, no overhauls , no downtime because the planes getting on , no cost for the hanger space that's starting to sound like a bargain ..

Yep, its a simple charter arrangement.

But its difficult to predict usage patterns for quiet times over the summer as against Paddys Day and the EU summits in the Spring.

And what if the charter provider had no planes available for an unforeseen trip? Embarrassing to say the least.

I take your point, but I'm much more a fan of the RAF dry lease arrangement with Titan for their liveried A321-200. I'd have gone for something like that, sized appropriately to our needs, before purchasing a new business jet outright.

Could always get something like a king Air as well ,for hospital transfers , the short hops and emergency runs over to UK or Europe ,

If they're thinking of spending up to 45 million on a business jet, they could spend 8 to 10 million on one of these + and hire in jets as needed ,

We already have the PC-12s and soon to be 3 C-295s to cover that requirement.

The government has been using a fairly small chartered Citation jet, so something like a PC-24 on the fleet would be well used, but a long range BizJet of some type will still be needed.

Yes, mostly Citations used to date, plus a couple of Embraer 135BJ Legacies and a Challenger or two.

Might as well do things properly for a change instead of looking for cheap solution. After all…It's another plane on the "Air Force" inventory.…

    G500 maybe

I think we can be reasonably certain it will be a European plane. My money remains on a Dassault Falcon 8X.

Hell of a video from 1977. If we could put something out along these lines….would do wonders for recruitment!

I know there is one air corps member here so he can confirm or deny this . I heard yesterday the Air Corps are sniffing around the two World food programme casas again. Is there any truth in it?

It's been in and out of Southampton a lot over the last 2 months…. once or twice a week a lot of the weeks

What are the world food program casas ? Ordered but unwanted stock ? Are they the same as our own 295s ? And why would we want 3 transports and 2 maritime patrol ?

Found this from a few years back ,

Any idea why the dept of defence didn't snap them up ? It was a bargain , for a plane type we were already buying and training up for, hell if one was destined to be a hanger queen + only brought out if the other had a fault ,it'd still have been a bargain , or station one in Dublin airport, and taxi a crew up to it , for use when there was no tower staff available in baldonnel (being a bit daft I know )

    https://www.thestory.ie/2022/11/10/department-of-defence-declined-cut-price-offer-to-buy-two-essentially-new-transport-aircraft-for-less-than-40-of-their-purchase-price/

brought to you by the same people who decided not to buy another cheap PC 12 as e had nowhere to park it in Baldonnel… In terms of versions I think I remember that CASA was willing to refit them with anything needed, but given how reluctant DOD and the various ministers have been for any degree of airlift getting the second hand ones is always going to be a problem. They are still in Spain at the moment I seem to remember, but whether there’s any actual interest from Ireland is another question.

I mean ideally as you say even for just a parts bin, or training aircraft they could be very useful for a reasonable investment.

Considering the C295 is an in-demand type, you'd wonder why no one has snapped this pair up already. Mind you, many of the 295s being delivered new from the factory are variants with customer-specific equipment etc. so maybe plain transports with no military equipment are not that attractive.

Thats the question for me. Have various entities assessed these and passes on them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,788 ✭✭✭roadmaster

Its always good to have aircraft of the one type for training and stand in for when the other aircraft when they are in for services.

The casas are also good for operating out of rough air strips as well if needs be.

Well the 2 maritime patrol craft are fairly specialist , and probably would last longer , if used only for maritime patrol ,and if the transport casa has an alternate then that's possible ,

Would crewing and maintaining 4 casa's (1 kept as spare) be beyond the air corps numbers, + the 4 pc 12s, ,+ 7 pc 9s, , 10 helicopters ,+ the government jet,

    Is Britten being replaced ?

Yes, it would. At the moment. Crewing the current fleet is beyond the Air Corps numbers.

Yes the BN Defender is being retired, a DeHavilland Twin Otter Guardian is on order.

In the 2023 report that sparky linked its says that the HSE and air corps are looking at a long term partnership for HEMS with a review currently taking place.

So maybe it looks like the air corps will be staying in place.

If that is the case that could have an impact on the amount of extra helicopters needed.

When the air corps get the 8 new super medium helicopters would it make sense to get the 139 fleet refurnished and kept for HEMS?
