As far as I am aware Tubridy is doing that show from London and every other Friday from Q102. At this point in time I have not received any information in relation to whether the broadcasting of his show is permanently moving to Q102. VRUK are still supporting his slot and with most of his shows format being talk/guest driven - it must be remembered that guests are more accessible in London. They can live feed or record a guests audio to Q102 but that would remove any hint of intimacy. The installation of wall to wall HD screens filled with presenter content does not mean anything as that content can be changed to another presenters signature instantaneously. The installation of Axia IQ or Wheatstone consoles bears no relevance to the listener either - what's coming out of their radio's speaker does. The look on Scott Williams' face behind a monitor in the background is amusing. Jeez.

it was annoying me who it was he looked like in that still, then it hit me:

Paul Whitehouse as of the characters from The Fast Show for younger members of the audience. The resemblance is uncanny.

RAJAR figures next week. Perhaps this talk of Q102 is a way of getting ahead the story of Virgin Radio replacing him in January and him ending up on Q102/etc?

I always think of Woody from Toy Story.

Some of the comments are great. They think it was not his fault RTE paid him a bonus. I wonder how they would feel if everyone in their company was asked to take pay cut, they took one and believed all their coworkers did to. They were even told by a certain co-worker that they took the pay cut. But then discover that co-worker lied to them, and their employer was topping up the coworkers wages by paying a customer to pay their coworker more money on the side. Using a method which cost an extra 30 percent on top of the money top up.

Honestly when I see analogies like this one it makes me more sympathetic towards Ryan if anything.

The fact is that it’s nobody else’s business how much I earn, and it’s none of my business how much any of my co workers earn. So if a co worker of mine lied to me about his salary, or if he got a pay cut or anything like that it’s tough titty at the end of the day: it simply has nothing to do with me.

I’m guessing that that won’t be a popular sentiment here.

Packaging it for his fans who still miss him. It is the whole failing upwards thing. Being fired from RTE and ending up on Virgin Radio was merely Tubridy being picked up by a major UK radio station because his talents weren't appreciated by RTE. Being dumped by Virgin Radio would be a promotion to being the main zelebrity on Q102/etc and his fans would spin it as him being on almost-national radio. Callan still has the slot in RTE. He is still toxic over the 150K issue.

    In a private company whatever.

In an entity funded by the taxpayer, well then, ethics etc. "If the work is not called upon to be done, well of course, the money goes back".

    Still waiting.

Is this all part of a face saving exercise, moving back to Dublin full while at still being carried on Virgin UK in the short term? Is it confirmed that he is moving back full time?

The narrative will be that "Ryan is a home bird at heart and though there were great opportunities for him in London, his heart remained in Dublin"

Then, when Virgin UK finally, inevitably, can him he can take solace in being another Q102 "classic hits" disk jockey.."Onwards and upwards", eh Ryan? Or is it "Bouncing back"??

At least Paul McCartney will be able to sleep more peacefully at night - with one less stalker to have to deal with in the metropolis 🙂

    The real DG of RTE.

The government will be forced to bring in the EU Pay Transparency Directive in the next couple of years. Employers will no longer be able to keep salary levels secret.

I have no idea what you’re on about.

He means Noel Kelly, the Agent of the stars.

He is right all the same, RTÉ staff were asked to take cuts and pay freezes, while many of the top earners did neither. In any company this is a blow to the work force, and if found out causes massive problems with motivation and staff moral.

How VRUK are still running with him I do not know. Q102's Facebook page pretty much confirmed that his slot was broadcast from their studios on Friday. It is evident that his on air vocal behaviour is even more erratic when he is broadcasting the show from Q102 and you cannot blame listeners for changing to another radio station.

His first link at 3.5 mins after 10 o'clock opens with his introduction and "How's everyone? and great to have your company". Since January there has been zero improvement in his on air presentation and what should be a 1:1 listener experience with the presenter and is still operating and displaying an amateur Hows everyone out there in radioland? presentation. His second link comes at 10.5 mins past the hour and comes out of Morgan Wellan and Post Malone's "I Had Some Help" Again: "Great stuff and that will do nicely and thanks very much indeed". I know that I have stated this many times but this is just not the way to behave on or to present on a contemporary music radio station. He then extends the link and proceeds to whaffle on about the moon. That link is then followed by the next track on the play out system which happens to be Mr. Mister's "Kyrie". There is absolutely no subtle lead in to the song, it sounds like having a tape recorder with that song on it - imagining that you are a DJ and then pressing play after talking.

His third link coming out of Mr. Mister's "Kyrie" consists of approximately one to two seconds of dead air which is noticeable on music radio and then the feed returns to the presenter sounding disoriented or lost as to what is going on or what just happened, for which he then announces: There you go and that is of course Marillion, and now...

A totally dismissive attitude to the music.

All this in just his first 16 minutes. Again, you cannot blame listeners for going elsewhere after 10am. You have Scott Williams sitting at a desk in the next room. If I were him I would be holding my head in shame as to what this guy is doing on my radio station. The radio station Q102 has poor listenership figures in the Dublin area and needs to improve. They really need to cop on.

It looks like too many of the management bought into the idea that Tubridy is a highly talented broadcaster like Gay Byrne, Terry Wogan and Gerry Ryan. This makes it a lot more difficult for them to admit that they made a mistake. It is like dumping a failure on prime time TV to the quality pre-dawn programming slot (ObRef: Night Stand with Dick Dietrick). If Tubridy is being shifted to Q102/etc from Virgin Radio, it allows some face saving for the people who thought that he was some kind of super talented irish broadcaster like the three named earlier instead of a Bruno Kirby type character from "Good Morning, Vietnam".

Whilst I do believe Ryan is not blameless, I do feel the majority of the blame for the show lies at the door of those who thought his form of chat, interviews, and “banter” could work on a music driven show. It patently can’t, and doesn’t.

To be fair to the guy, he would likely have zero input into the music selection on Virgin as they will have a curated playlist. They might throw him a bone every now and then and play a Beatles song to appease him but there’s something funny about hearing him pretend to get excited to play Mis-Teeq or The New Radicals when he must be dying inside at the very thought of it. I’ve even heard him playing Michael Jackson recently, the same Michael Jackson he defiantly said on RTÉ Radio some years ago that he’d never play again because of his association with scandal. Not the first time Ryan has failed to keep his word though when money is on the table and to hell with the optics or principles.

He said he'd never play Jackson again because of his association with scandal.

    What a hypocrite.

If you look at Virgin Radio UK's twitter feed you will see promos for most of their shows, with one glaring ( to an Irish audience) exception you'll have to do some rummagjng to find any reference to Tubs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,537 ✭✭✭jmcc

Just looked at the Q102 comments and they are quite negative. They want the taxpayer's money back not Tubridy. It may not end well for Q102.

I guess since he lost his highly paying gig and started getting paid by Virgin, he had to let go his principles hah!

Edit: WTF am I talking about principles and Tubs in the same sentence, jésus!

Sure all he has to do is TELL Virgin Radio bosses that he won't let Jacko get played on HIS SHOW. That'd tell them!

I think Short-Arse Management Ltd pulled every stroke, called in every favour owed, promised the sun, the moon and the stars to control/manage this existential crises for them -

Think about it - if Ryan was the Crème de la crème of SAM Ltd and it turned out that Ryan was a complete fraud (as we all knew he was), what does that say about the rest of short-arse's talent?

The little fella is throwing the kitchen sink at this

To paraphrase a certain Northern politician, “he hasn’t gone away you know”.

I see tech “expert” Jess Kelly is doing AIB ads on YouTube now. He really has fingers in a lot of pies.

Lots of his crew in the papers over the weekend puff-piecing away to beat the band. I’m surprised any brand would touch anyone associated with his agency, but nothing should surprise me when it comes to insta likes anymore.

I dunno how long Q102 have had this as their main facebook page, but they are taking a risk to be sure, what with majority public opinion not on Tubs side.

    image.png

Perhaps Q150 might be a better name for the station.

Ryan's return to Q102 seems like a demotion, giving VM a way to distance themselves from the overhype without having to admit failure. This way it will spare both parties from embarrassment..

    That smug look!

Let's hope nothing ever breaks about McCartney being a deviant, or tubs will be heading for the nearest bridge.
