It's all right...he's not really interested in that sort of controversial stuff!

Not only were they not on overnight as mentioned, they didn't have any English language music let alone any shows where less than full fluency would be accepted at the time

Wikipedia is full of absolute bobbins on lower interest articles. If it doesn't have a citation, assume it's untrue. 80s radio schedules should be piss easy to cite due to newspaper archives

As well as cheating repeatedly on their respective partners, the brothers John and Robert were also known to “double dip” and share ladies; not very statesman-like is it? I’m not sure what this new book will add to the volume of information already out there but I might have a look for it or add it to a wish list. RFK Jr. seems to have inherited his father’s wandering eye too.

Mafia Spies is worth a watch imo, probably a bit too long but it does touch on that JFK/Judy Campbell supposed relationship, her relationship with Sam Giancana and of course the CIA's collaboration with the Mafia to assassinate Castro. Interesting, especially for folks who have never really followed that sort of thing.

one of the unintended consequences of the English language ban was that you could often hear fairly banging dance and techno tracks on R na G. They were fair game so long as they had no English lyrics.

    Hall of fame:

    Token RTÉ head

    Some CEO

    Someone from Northern Ireland

Lastly an actually down to earth radio person that had played their trade for 30+ years and has a lasting loyal fan base.

Might have been harder to inject Ryan into the illustrations too.

The side-roads this thread has gone down go to show how utterly irrelevant he has become. Is he not making radio that's worth commenting on? 🤔

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 834 ✭✭✭TheBMG

he really isn’t! I did notice the pre-recorded Sunday show uses the same playlist across all the stations which I wouldn’t think was neccessary with contemporary play out systems. It’s not as if people are listening to Ryan for a music intensive show

Careful now, you could well be giving him cause for concern. Although I am sure he will rectify that over the next couple of days and get the train back on the track.

I thought him meeting a creator of Alan Partridge was a weird life meeting art meeting life loop.

His podcast is actually a fantastic listen. Fireside chats with big names.

Just saw a facebook post on Q102 Facebook page - Tubs showing off his "new studio" and saying he's looking forward to doing every day Mon-Fri 10am to 1pm? What gives - has he left Virgin or just moved back to Ireland and the show still broadcast on Virgin?

    https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1097515308684807&id=960823936091001

At least their facebook post allows comments 😉

I’m guessing it’s just a reveal of the new Q102 studio and they got the big name to do it. Looks well and obviously designed for socials.

Well, he says his "beautiful new home" and "my new chair"...

Long day in London, just home. Having a late supper and flicking through the channels. The Three Amigos is on some random movie channel. It hasn’t aged well, same old lines repeated ad nauseum.

When I was in the airport this morning (technically yesterday I guess as it’s after midnight) I believe I may have seen Ryan. I can’t be 100% sure as I was in the phone whilst walking briskly in the opposing direction to my gate. It was along the rather long walkway separated by glass where on the left hand side passengers walk to their gates, and on the right hand side you can see the passengers who have just disembarked heading for baggage and the exit. I’m 50/50 on whether it was him or not, the lack of screaming fans leads me to suspect it may not have been him. Perhaps some of his greatest supporters could let us know if he’s back in Ireland, as they seem to have an inside track on such matters?

I think they forgot to turn off comments. The question will plague him the rest of his life.

The comments still haven’t been turned off. They’re peppered with either questions asking about the money, or some love-bombing from Ryan’s female admirers. It makes for equal amusing and vomit-inducing reading.

I read this morning one Gerry Hutch is contemplating running in Dublin Central in the forthcoming General Election. With Q102 located in Mayor Street there will now potentially be more than one infamous person working in the area. I’m not a betting man, but I’d wager Mr. Hutch will win a seat should he decide to run. The jokes re. criminals in the Dáil will write themselves.

The Three Amigos was always consider to be Chase's, Martin's and Shorts' worst films. Martin was lucky to land a number of good follow up movies, not sure if Chase had run his course by that time, and Shorts career was relatively short in any case. It is noticeable that Short and Martin are now popular again through Murders in the Building, interesting how Chase is missing!

Why do you get me to do this.

How long is he going to go on about Blitz … when it dates badly!

Endurance of these dairies is correct… queue the Irish connection … a doc about Shackleton.

If Trump had some connection to Ireland he'd write about it

As I was waiting to enter the screening I met Irish actors Amy De Bhrún and Valerie O’Connor, who are doing great things on British TV, and they assured me that there was plenty of Irish involvement in the making of The Apprentice, so well done to all as this is a smart, nuanced and very well-made film.

    Meanwhile on Joker

I posted my thoughts on Instagram and was heartened to find a few like-minded souls who were also relieved to find that, like me, they weren’t the only ones who liked this reviled movie

Return to Twitter/X then see the response, you won't get a critical thing said on InstaTubs.

I was going to look up a connection to The Joker and The Three Amigos to Ireland … but sure don't we have our own Jokers and "sure look who's just come in if it isn't the 3 amigos".

    Ted, I'm hugely confused!

Have Virgin given him the boot? Has his dream come true? A return to a radio studio in Dublin and his exile over after 10 short months?

Bobson you know that the world isn't filled with bunnies and cotton candy.

Insta is just there to allow people to agree with everything you say.

    On insta you say: -

"Joker was a tour de force, but and I know this might rub some people the wrong way, Joker Folie à Deux was just perfect, great sing and dancing #unpopularopinion"

    On X you say: -

"**** Joker was ****, but this sequel rocks, #losers"

you can actually disagree with people both online and in the real world.

Calling people angry and losers, is just as pathetic so called "losers".

Block and mute those who are just trolling works quite well.

Also doesn't seem like it actually happened!

Chase does not have the best reputation work wise, indeed he’s almost universally considered an a-hole in real life. I recently heard Joel McHale go to town on him on a podcast over their time together in Community, where they came to blows more than once. I’ve also heard others relay similar stories. It’s a shame, as I do like a lot of his comedic output, but apparently no one will work with Chase anymore.

Short is incredibly funny in one to one interviews. I caught Martin and his two man show in NY some years ago, it was very good to be fair. Short talked about his Irish roots a lot, indeed if Ryan ever got to interview him that would be a good starting point.

Nice subtle “I was casually attending some film premieres last week” line from Ryan there reminding us all just how super famous he really is, and great to see him continuing his tradition of not paying for anything. Genuine question: did he attend the same movie twice in a week and describe them both as premieres, or was he just repeating himself as filler for the word dump his weekly dairy has become. It could be written by ChatGPT at this stage.

I saw The Apprentice myself on Friday last. Cohn is an interesting character, worth digging deeper on him. It’s not awful, but I was a little disappointed considering the wealth of material they had to work with and the male leads. Great of Ryan to assure us there was an Irish angle though so therefore it’s totes amazeballs. Part of me now wonders is The Toyman who became The Bookman now about to morph into The MovieMan? I do hope not.

I was orginally told he worked on RnG by someone who worked on his RTE show. But oddly their is a citation on the wiki page. However its to a Irsh Mirror article.

His role model, Alan Partridge(Steve Coogan) is in the Joker. Steve is a great friend of the show and is mum is from County Mayo. Brendan Gleeson, another one doing extraordinary things in Hollywood, is also in it. Another alumni of the show.

    Communication was the greatest fatality

Has anyone confirmed whether he has moved back to Ireland?

Virgin Radio still list him for next week as a presenter so I presume this is just a location change.

They might as well leave the comments on because there never will be a time when somebody doesn't comment on the money or something else related to his RTE exit. It's baked in now, part of Tubridy's baggage. Anybody who has ever read the replies to most social media posts knows negativity is never far away. That's just for cat videos. It all becomes noise and I don't think anybody actually pays attention to the commentary.

That video certainly looks like they're easing Tubridy back into a full-time Dublin gig on Q102. They'll quietly shelve his Virgin show in London and get the spin up and running. Tubridy misses his mammy/kids/weekends in Connemara/spicebags/walks on Dun Laoghaire pier. I just hope that he has done enough damage to his reputation as a top tier presenter, and that we won't see him back on RTE again.
