Gotta agree with you there too 😀

Mind the Model Y was the best selling car in the world last year (as I predicted 2 years ago to much ridicule in this thread and others) and will likely be the best selling car this year too. And I'm not sure if Tesla / Musk has much appetite to take on fierce Chinese competition in the lower ends of the car market. Tesla is not a car company after all.

BMW 7/8 Series and X7 contributed to 6% of BMWs units sold in H1 2024. Given the price charged for these, you can expect that to be 10-15% of BMW revenue for those 'halo' models vs 2% for Tesla S/X

S and X have been surpassed, better segment cars out there and doing well

I wouldn't go quite that far. What better segment cars are out there? The only car better than a Model S in some ways imho is a Porsche Taycan. I have owned a few Porsches, the Taycan is a far superior driver's car than the Model S, but it lacks in many other areas. Software and tech are brutal. And the car is extremely unreliable. Despite that I still have searches / notifications up on one 😂

What can I get that's better than an X and fulfills the role an X does? Not even the plaid X but the LR X? Rivian R1S perhaps but they may go bankrupt very quickly if you look at their cash burn rate.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,687 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

Well you can't really get a new S or X anymore in lots of countries (RHD) and my comment was to the US and (I think) Norway/selected other LHD European markets.

At $70k for the base model it's well up against the S/X in the US.

You can get the S and X in any EU market except ireland and uk, you can also get it in the EEA and other LHD countries. It's not a special order.

What is, the lucid? Have you seen lucid's financials? They are burning a billion dollars a quarter nearly, not as bad as Rivian but they are not margin positive. I would not consider them an established company either and they are not a competitor for Tesla, moreso a competitor for fisker.

The only real competitors (other than Rivian) for tesla in the S and X space are the likes of the i5 for the S and the EQS SUV, R1S, EX90 etc for the X.

Tesla Model Y 7 Seat Option - Finally Coming to Europe! Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive 7-Seater will be available in Ireland starting at €55,897. I have a look around what it will look like at the Paris Motor show.

If you have owned a Kona EV and like to continue the trend of "cars for people with no legs in the back seat" that Y will be great! The X seven seater is ok for 7 seats OR luggage capacity but not both, the Y will be neither!

It looks like the deeper, under floor storage in the Model Y is unaffected by the extra row of seats?

So a loss of only around 50l (when folded down) for the flexibility of an extra 2 seats and only €4,000 extra?

Whatever about the legroom - looks like anyone over 4 ft tall is going to have their head smacked by the rear glass?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,451 ✭✭✭markpb

What is the market is for these kind of 7 seat cars? It would be very awkward to put small children into child seats back there but there isn't enough legroom for older children. Is it for people whose younger children are small enough to fit at the back but old enough to do their own seatbelts? That's got to be very niche?

can't have helped that it seems that they made the wheels look bigger simply by painting the tyres?

There are very few normal sized 7 seaters left and almost none are EVs, so I'd say it will sell pretty well. Not everyone needs, wants or can afford a Santa Fe / EV9 size vehicle. If this was available earlier in Europe, there would be a lot fewer EQBs on the road.

Obviously it wouldn't be an ideal option if you need both the boot and the third row or always need the third row. But the flexibility is handy to have and the increment on the price is less than I was expecting.

I see the market as families who have 2 or 3 kids but want to be able to able to bring an additional adult or child on occasional trips (dropping grandparents home, school runs, away matches, etc). Young kids enjoy the fun of using the back row, although I do think they submit to it more easily when they don't have to do it all the time - or to avoid having to sit in the middle seat.

I've also done short trips as a regular man-sized adult in the back row of both a VW Touran and the Merc EQB that replaced it. Neither was comfortable at all but it is just about bearable even for an adult - e.g. to save having two designated drivers.

A Model Y is a little bigger than either of these so I doubt it's tighter in the leg area (not sure about the the sloping roof). I haven't checked if the middle row can be moved forward to share out the available leg room better between the middle and rear - hopefully yes.

Also, when not using the back seats, you still have a big boot so I say these cars are pretty practical.

Roofline is much more aggressive than either of the models you mention. This is an on-paper proposition until you look more closely at the shape and interior arrangement of the MY and realise these additional seats are virtually pointless. But hey, it ticks a box in the portfolio.

Bit harsh, the video attached will give you a better perspective. ideal for kids on occasional use.

Ive 3 but would be handy to have the option to carry friends/family. Matches etc

We had a 7 seat model X, replaced with an XC90 diesel and model 3. The X was big enough for 7 people OR 5 people with luggage. We were looking at replacing with an EV9 (overpriced for a Kia but lovely), an EQB (no rear legs allowed) and most other EV options with 7 seats were the same. It's very much 5+2 seats like the 2+2 seats in my old Nissan 300ZX (or in a Jag XK), in that you can't sit in them.

I'd love a proper seven seat EV , like a VW T5 class (doesnt exist AFAIK outside of conversions with awful range - EQV etc) or alternatively an EV9/EX90 (overpriced) or a model X (no new RHD). It just doesnt exist.

The market for the Y 7 seats will be a bunch of people who just want the 7 seats for very occasional use, or a load of disappointed people with legless children.

I've just showed the 7 seater to her indoors, thought she'd jump at it with the .99% finance, no interest the XC90 diesel is staying it's her main car. The EX90 coming in at 140k starting once the EV tarrifs come in means this diesel will be around a long time.

Agreed, those are the two we cross shopped (other than a used X) too. We had an X75 and it just about worked for space, and it just about didnt work for range, so I got rid.

80k is madness for a kia. They'd want to be giving -5% interest!

There are very few EQB’s on the road anyway but it might attract folks that have something like an ICE S-Max etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,512 ✭✭✭sk8board

people who buy the 7 seat Y are the people who do so with their fingers crossed hoping against hope that Tesla were genuine in calling it a 7 seater - but end up disappointed.

I didn’t even realise they had ever actually built it, even for the US.

The single use case is you have very small children maybe up to 8 years old who need to be brought 2km to a football match, with absolutely no luggage. That’s literally the extent of it.
would be cheaper to take the 5 seater and a taxi on those rare occasions and save money.

that’s not my experience. We’ve had Renualt Grand Scenics, and VW Touran. Pop up seats are perfect for carrying extra kids for play dates. Going to sports etc.

I think the 7 seat would be very popular with families who have young kids. And don’t want a actual 7 seater.

The Peugeot E-5008 may be something else to put on the list. More of practical 7 seater with 3 individual seats across the back row. But probably wont land until the new year. Asking will probably be around €50-55K.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,015 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Grand scenics and Tourans have high rear roofline, that's why the 7 seats works ok.

    Different in the MY

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 203 ✭✭khamilton

Most 7 seaters up until the mid 00s were estates with pop up rear-facing seats in the boot, and popular.

That’s true of large vehicles with long high roofs like the Grand Scenic and the Touran - however the Y is too small for 7 seats, has a sloping roof, and Tesla has simply plonked the pop ups in the middle of the boot like an old merc or Volvo estate. They’re for small children at best, and with the weight reg’s on child car seats, isofix and booster seats, you’re going to be limited to specifically 7-10 year olds at the very most, and need to be happy with their head being against the ceiling glass above them and rear window right behind. The online videos are laughable - It barely passes any level of insurance or safety standard.

Let’s be clear - Tesla have released this latest variation of the Y to boost sales ahead of a refreshed model at some point next year.
