Senator Mark Wall (Labour) is absolutely in contention; particularly as SFs support has cratered in Kildare, and Cathal Berry's base has moved in to the Laois constituency.

That last seat could be a real battle. If O'Fearghail retires, which is still possible, the last two seats will become interesting, especially if one of the big parties puts up a second candidate.

Has there been an instance of a sitting Ceann Comhairle retiring instead of availing of automatic reelection in recent times?

Sean Treacy is the only one I can think of

It's what happens though when party leadership is autocratic, intolerant and elitist. Haughty Haughey wouldn't tolerate questioning of his leadership, thus O'Malley's P.D.s were born, and his respect for democracy within the party was Trump like, remember his 'open roll call vote' used to intimidate and ensure his tenure. A Lidl Napoleon he was.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

oh absolutely he was - but it’s nice to see Mary Lou on the back foot I have to say - very hard to justify most of the latest crisis she’s faced, especially the pedo pushers - she’s trying to deflect by pushing back on other parties errors but let’s face it she’s egg on her face and up to her neck in sh0ite - and I love it 😀

SF really blew the massive opposition numbers they had by always playing the populist card, refuting every bit of progress and good idea, instead of embracing them, and promising better. Their big focus of the magnetic phone pouches, €20 a student and a brilliant idea to curb the malignancy of social media, was a massive own goal, trying to convince the people it would be better spent on, er, what exactly? Roof repairs for a few schools, a fill of oil for others? To think the budget is the place for micromanagement decisions shows their complete lack of experience at running Ireland.ltd, or any large organisation, other than a paramilitary one.

Patricia Ryan does a very good job in Monasterevin, and she was right to leave Sinn Fein as they don't want to be in Government. What.is the point in voting for them then ?

And I would say the story on the front of The Indo. will push a few more SF's out the door as well.

The SDs also won't be delighted with the overall topic of inappropriate texts to teens being brought back up

SF is falling apart at a fast clip in the Republic.

Stanley will be a loss to them all right, he was one of the few capable TDs they had.

SF crashing and burning is incredible enjoyable

Especially as you watch the online supporters slowly losing the plot over the last few months

Brian Stanley left over a ‘flawed’ and ‘not objective’ internal review process. Who would have guessed that SF Kangaroo Courts would still be use today and not questioning an unaccountable Party hierarchy would be the status quo?
    Everyone, really….

Not doubting You but afaik, she has done nothing for the biggest town in her constituency.
I'm from Newbridge & the only time I hear her name is when she went on holiday & stepped down from her party.

    No loss imo.

I'm always curious when I see things like this. What could an opposition TD do for an area?

How have the government TDs for Kildare South performed? I know one is CC so gets a free pass. Probably doesn't help an area when a sitting government TD gets reelected unopposed.

On SF, I saw Peadar Tobin's post on X this morning and I think he's hit the nail on the head. Wouldn't often agree with him but I think he's got this spot on.

5 TDs have resigned from SF in 6 years.

I can't think of any opposition party that has shed TDs a such a rate before.

This is what happens when you don't stand for anything.

Sinn Fein far more concerned with how it operates as a party etc than any real vision for the country. And as long as that is the case they'll remain around 15-20% vote share.

SF remind me of the UK Labour Party. So much wrong with public services in the UK yet the Tories won four elections in a row because people didn't believe in Labour. Too busy looking inwards. Politics similar here. There's no credible opposition to vote for.

’The Right seeks converts while the Left seeks out traitors.’

PBP, the flash in the pan Rise, and how many other Left wing parties have we had in the last 15 years alone? They can’t stop arguing amongst themselves and splitting.
Getting or even approaching power seems to be far down the agenda for them.
    ‘This party stands against x’

    ‘This party supports y’

‘Can we get on with the plan for the next election?’

‘Are you saying that you don’t support y? I move that the deputy is censured. All in favour?’

The radical left tendency is reasserting itself in Sinn Fein, they are interfering in candidate selection, putting in their own as candidates and many of the old guard are being shoved out the door.

    The sticks are back.

Yep, in my local area for county council SF, despite not having a seat, put in two candidates, perhaps because that’s what FF and FG. The incumbents all won again with the single Labour candidate topping the poll. SF split the vote on themselves and probably would’ve squeaked in on the 5th seat otherwise.
It’s hard not to think that somebody said that two candidates was a bad idea (most likely, one of the candidates) and was shouted down about it. I’m sure that played out all over the country.

How things have changed since the election back in 2020 when one of their candidates could go on holiday and still get elected.

I'd be very surprised if Harris doesn't go for a November election now that the biggest party in opposition is having to face a new problem every few days.

McDonald and O Neill must be feeling the pressure, their bosses in Belfast won't be happy.

The government is never going to have this chance again. They could talk in vague terms about SF and their values, their mysterious funding (a recluse in a caravan left a will just vague enough to leave you money and it was a 7 figure sum? If you believe that, I’ve a bridge to sell you.), the Bobby Storey funeral, ‘no alternative to violence’ rewriting of history they’ve attempted. But now Harris can say ‘you not only employed a paedophile but your other employees lied and vouched for him to get another job at an unsuspecting charity.’ It’s not like the effer was digging ditches.
Any proposals or points SF have will pale in comparison because their opponents can keep bringing that up and SF can’t say ‘let’s move on from that’

Interesting. I am not sure of her Newbridge base.

Its just good political thinking and seeing the writing on the wall and the sinking ship, not much different to FG folks dropping out.

Am I the only one thinking that referring the matter to the Gardai is a stunt so they don't have to talk about it. McDonald more or less acknowledged that the initial complaint wasn't a criminal matter, they've even had legal advice. Getting the Gardai involved is just wasting their time, when they have much better things to be doing.

McDonald 'not in a position' to comment on Stanley claim (rte.ie)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,138 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Most of her branch of the party appear to have left with her; so not sure there's a lot of local party people left against her.

Party has one councillor in the entire county and both TDs were very inactive so there probably isn't much vibrancy there to begin with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,576 ✭✭✭keeponhurling

Yeah, maybe. And why did they have the so-called "kangaroo court" at all if it was something for the Gardai to be looking into.

It's really hard to comment though given the lack of information.

MLM said it was referred to the Gardai out of an abundance of caution. Maybe that's sensible.

I think a lot of people are very curious !

And given that Stanley is going for re-election as an independent, it's probably in the public interest to understand what this is all about.

I mentioned in another thread that I've family in Leixlip. By all accounts Reada Cronin, SF TD, has been largely

anonymous since been elected. They're not giving her much chance of being re-elected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,138 ✭✭✭✭L1011

She is doing as a TD exactly what she did as a Councillor. Nothing.

We got rid of her on the first count in 2019 in Maynooth due to five years of doing nothing as a Councillor.

Have SF proposed and increase in spending on Gardai and Defence forces

And if yes how does it compare to others
