To a degree he is but his self deprecation is likeable as opposed to Foley who thinks he's really, really funny. Quilty is sharper and has more wit than Foley.

Phil Cawley originally was a weekday presenter on Radio Ireland/Today FM with his own show. After a few years, he was pushed to weekends (Friday to Sunday) and became the reliable fill-in presenter. After some time, Phil was pushed to one weekend day. The next move was to push him out as per a previous post from the previous page.

Years ago, someone here posted very accurately what Phil Cawley was earning for his 3 weekend shows on Today FM and nobody believed it, many posters foolishly insisted that he wouldn't be getting 25k for that job let alone 80. Thanks to the 00s Celtic tiger, Willie O'Reilly was able to run Today FM like RTE. Tim Kelly is another DJ who Willie kept for years on big money just for filling in after losing his midmorning show to Ray D'Arcy

    Colman Domingo is so smooth.

I enjoy the self-deprecation. And how he plays the snippets of people slagging him, albeit in good fun not maliciously.

I like Quilty a lot too. I remember a poster on here a few years ago had a serious hard-on for him, always bigging him up… maybe he was right all along. There's something about him, he has a natural wit and seems a genuine kind of fella. I am surprised he doesn't have a permanent day time slot but maybe this super-sub role suits his circumstances (I think he has other stuff going on outside of radio).

If you didn't hear it live yesterday, there was a really great moment on his show, where he handled a potentially very awkward conversation superbly with a live caller. Well worth checking out if you didn't hear it, it's up on Today FM's Facebook/Instagram.

Ya I was listening to that and as it started I was thinking "how are you gonna dig yourself out of this" but wow he was unbelievable, it was a really great moment of radio, very honest, natural and caring.

He handled that well. He was very good doing his Yesterday FM show live at Electric Picnic, very good indeed.

It's up on the Today Fm Insta page, second post there currently. Has gotten a great reaction.

I don't think we are allowed reveal posters past usernames due to GDPR

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,849 ✭✭✭ILikeBoats

That's a lovely interaction. Fair play to Dara.

Whoops! The respective usernames were previously mentioned in posts at the time of the change. Anyone who does a search through posts from a number of years ago will find the user in question in any event. Maybe amend/delete. I have amended my post now.

Quilty's One Note Guessing Game is class too. Don't have too bad a strike rate on it myself.

Anyone notice that on the eve of well-publicised concerts, if you make it to the final of Music Master, the answer is more than likely going to be the singer about to perform? Was Chris Martin yesterday and definitely remember Taylor Swift being it during that week of hype.

There were loads of gremlins earlier while I was driving, seemed like Louise is standing in tomorrow evening and was pre-recording her song intros without realizing she was on air. 🫣

It kept cutting in over one song anyway and also took out the sports news.

It only seems like yesterday and I remember it so well, here is the Radio Ireland (re-launched as Today FM a few months later in Jan 1998) weekend and weekday schedule from August 1997.

Lots of strange programmes to look back on, though in fairness it was in competition with RTE Radio stations and the local stations - though the one i cant get my head around was that there was one hour of classical music each weekday morning, as well as a 2 hour sunday morning classical show (after 8 hours of overnight dance music)….so 7 hours of classical music each week !!

That's certainly an eclectic mix! Some of the scheduling is a little odd - particularly the early hours of Saturday show "Insomnia" which looks to be a combination of dance music and live phone-in (?) I'm imaging it was 20 mins of raving followed by someone phoning in about their missed bin collection or their child not getting a place in the nearest school, but it can't have been that odd surely?

I like the idea of the 6am weekday classical countdown. I remember "River of Soul" with Karl Tsigdinos but I don't recall him also having the weekday mid-morning slot…a challenging time slot considering Gerry Ryan's dominance on 2FM at the time.

A farming programme on Saturday morning!

It's certainly an interesting lineup, but maybe trying a bit too hard to appeal to too many people. It's a long way from the "Let's play Bruno Mars for the 10th time today" station it is today.

They played the best of new Irish and International talent from 6pm to 8pm on a Sunday evening when people might be travelling - good idea rather than the current slot entitled "we will fill our obligation to play Irish music that isn't Dermot Kennedy at 8am on a Sunday when everyone is asleep"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,570 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

That weekday slot by Karl was a stand-in programme while someone was on holidays. It just happened to be that particular schedule. I don't remember his River of Soul being on Saturdays. I always associated it with Sundays, but I do remember that his showtime was moved around quite a bit before it was shelved altogether. It lasted until 2003. That farming programme with Seamus Duke was on Sunday morning (not Saturday). I notice that in those Radio Ireland days Phil Cawley was known as Philip Cawley!

Edit: Paul Power was not normally on 7 days a week. He was standing in for Philip Boucher Hayes in the weekday lunchtime slot, who was presumably on holidays.

So much better than the algorithm generated shite they play today.

its amazing how recently as a few years ago there were still echos in the Radio Ireland days in Today FM's schedules - the post 7pm non mainstream music shows, the sunday am discussion show, premier league live then Saturday Kicks with Dec Pierce, the last word. All that's left really is the last word and a few - Claire Beck, Block Rockin Beats Ed Smith, the rest being playlisted stuff which is these days slightly geared towards the over 40s. Bland FM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,956 ✭✭✭✭BPKS

In recent years Today FM fired Claire Beck, Kelly Anne Byrne and Paul McCloone. And stopped Ed picking the music for his show.

That just tells you that it is not a music radio station anymore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,508 ✭✭✭hold my beer

They haven't fired Claire Beck, she was on on Saturday & Sunday. Kelly Ann Byrne was replaced by Claire Beck, not sure if KAB left or was fired

No, Claire Beck and Kelly Anne Byrne each had shows at the same time, until KAB left around… 2020? 2021? Claire has been there for years.

But agree, there's far fewer music DJs these days. Paul McLoone, Dave Couse, gone, even Ed Smith is restricted to an algorithm playlist these days, and I can't see Ed being allowed have Cathal Funge back as a holiday stand-in any time soon.
