I recently changed phones and can only connect to 3g mobile data currently. I have to change my preferred network to 3g. If I have preferred network as lte or 5g, it will say 4g or 4g+ in the top right corner but there is zero mobile data connection. Anyone encountered this before?

Phone is Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 pro 5g.

Edit: after reading the thread, could it be that my phone isn't supported by the eir network for 4g/5g? Can't think of anything else. Strange that the 4g does come up on the top right of the screen though.

If the 4G 4G+ is showing on the top screen try swiping down and turn off WiFi. I've had it where I was on WiFi but left the area, but the phone still tried to connect to a weak signal. I switched off WiFi and got a great connection on mobile data.

Anyone know how to check your voicemail from abroad?

    171 does not work.

Neither does my own number followed by 5 after the 087....

is the extra 5 not to just go straight to voicemail when calling others? I’ve always just called my own number

Has anyone ever used roaming in Krakow? I've had hit and miss experiences in Europe and just wondering if I should expect issues here?

I had no issues with GoMo while I was in Krakow or any other part of Poland.

Roaming has stopped working on day 2 for me, cannot manually connect to any network, GoMo saying they can see no issue in their side.

Random question. Just wondering if anyone has service/signal issues during power outages in their area? I had a few power outages in the past few months and have no signal every time. Not sure how they are connected.

I'm guessing your nearest mast is on the same power line and doesn't have back up. Worrying in case of emergency services activation. Going to sound like an old fogey but land lines around my area never failed like that.

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,630 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

That's very unusual, the backup at the mast must be faulty. I remember VM customers were my father lived were having similar problems turned out the battery backup in the cabinet hadn't been connected ☺️

yes it happens to me too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,236 ✭✭✭wassie

The masts should have a battery backup to get through a few hours. But as the above shows, it actually needs to be (i) connected and (ii) maintained.

makes sense, it is ok for a while but after a few hours it goes

yep does happen, I know my mast is on a different line than my house, I remember i couldn't get coverage one day…Checked the powercheck app and the power was gone off around where the mast was. (Wifi internet in the house),

Some mast houses have diesel generators also but obviously not my local one.

Thanks all, I think I will have to change networks based on their response. I'm based in Dublin 15. Shame, can't fault gomo outside of this issue.

Who's to say the provider you pick aren't on the same mast, as they told you it's really beyond their control.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,238 ✭✭✭ironictoaster

Because I live with someone who's on 3 PAYG and had no issues during the outage (4G). Is there a way to check with the mast you are connected to?

https://siteviewer.comreg.ie might give you an idea at least.

Just giving my 2 cents, but I am on 3 for years now and whenever a power outage happens I am never affected. Someone else in my house on eir and Vodafone always gets affected and never has signal in a power outage. Then one day I rang into 3 for something unrelated and the woman on the phone happened to inform me that because 3 have a lot of government contracts they have an obligation to provide backup power generators at all masts.. so they may be your winner.

I have never experienced an outage like this? Power outages are extremely rare in Dublin, and don't tend to last long. The mobile base stations would generally have enough battery backup to last through a power outage. Are you certain that there isn't another explanation? Is it possible that your phone is defaulting to WiFi Calling within your home, and you are losing WiFi when your home power goes? Your phone should switch to the eir public network for mobile if this happens - but maybe you have poor indoor coverage in your house? If you have fibre broadband, you could put a small UPS on your broadband router, and this will ensure that you have mobile coverage using WiFi calling during a power outage.

Thats true I beleive cause i remember gaurds having all o2 phones and most of the masts at garda stations where o2 and three bought them out.

The EU eTenders requirements for Govt contracts within the EU have very strict data privacy requirements that do not permit data to leave the EEA for suppliers of IT services to the Govt sector in the EU. Since Three is a Chinese headquartered company with most of it's platforms for Ireland hosted outside the EEA (in the UK), it is hard to imagine that they comply with the requirements for EU eTenders? I would expect that Eir and Vodafone probably have most of the Govt contracts in Ireland.

I think they started using eir to some extend in 2017.

    https://eirevo.ie/blog/garda-mobility/index.html

But since they are using Huawei for their RAN I assumed that would be an issue.

It used to be O2 for the civil service. That then became 3. Then 3 and Vodafone made a deal on mast sharing and Vodafone became an option for the civil service. Then all the networks made a deal and I'm not sure where that left the situation.

That was 10 years ago. It could all have changed since then I'll admit

One thing though is that 3 built their own network from the ground up here and when they bought O2 they inherited the operations centre in Limerick. I suspect that's how they are keeping within the data protection rules set out by the EU

There's a fair bit construction in my area with new housing estates, so I presume it has something to do with this. I am not use wifi calling as I do lose my siro fibre broadband during an outage. I am just concerned in the event of an emergency situation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,526 ✭✭✭Glaceon

That's an interesting one. I have SIRO here in Drogheda and it does survive a power outage for me, we had one back in March for about an hour. I have a UPS on my internet gear and it kept going through the whole thing.

You will need a small amount of backup power to keep your broadband router going during a power outage, but you can easily do this with a small UPS (<€100). I don't know about Siro - but Eir fibre works fine without power, if you run the router off a UPS. (If you have Solar PV with a house battery, you may already have a UPS!). Then you can use WiFi calling to keep your phone working.
