The key question is what is the display you are using? The device you linked to has specs of 4K 60Hz which will be fine if thats all your TV/Monitor can handle.

But if you are want to game at maximum 4K 120Hz and have support for Dolby Vision, VRR, Atmos etc then you need a switch that is HDMI 2.1 compliant

Plenty of choice on Amazon (link here) and cheaper than that Currys unit also. Even if you current TV cant support this, you can future proof the switch if you decide to upgrade your TV in the future.

If you go down that path, also need to ensure your cables are certified HDMI 2.1 compliant also. The HDMI cable supplied with the X is, so you just need the one between the switch & the TV. Again, can be for under ten quid - just make sure its states it is certified.

Thank Jebus, Xbox are currently testing the ability to remember more than one Wifi network! How this has remained like this for so long is just insane.

That's nothing, the inability to reconnect to a router after a power outage is beyond comprehension. It's the only device I own that can't re-connect to a router unless it's completely powered down and restarted.

Obviously not a problem for most, but when you are lucky enough to get 50+ pwer cuts annually…

I do yeah works well. It's a cheaper verison of that though. Try amazon

I don't get how Series X can do 4k HDR 120 fps ... and super silent but can't do things the most cheap smartphone can do. Also, not being able to provide the current time, without an internet connection is bizarre. Especially bizarre since it's basically a PC, and has the backing of a N trillion dollar company. I really don't get it. Excellent hardware, but strange software.

I think putting games on other platforms is the best thing MS can do. I see great reviews for previous Xbox exclusives on PlayStation sites. This is how MS and XBox get out of the "no games" mire they are in.

I have a 120hz tv and I keep the Xbox in 60hz mode unless I'm playing a multiplayer game. Microsoft still haven't fixed the audio desync issue with games running at a lower framerate in that mode that's been there since launch.

Getting a Steamdeck ruined the Xbox for me. I so liked the eco-system and better priced games, in many instances, I had my son build me a PC that fairly closely emulates a Steamdeck, except for size, portability and the 7900 xtx that gives me 6-8 times series X performance. The announcement of the next Xbox having the same performance as the series X was the clincher. I am not waiting several more years. The games I most like to play now have enjoyable performance requirements way beyond what the series x can manage.

I get the impression Microsoft puts very little effort and resources into the xbox ecosystem. I think they are just lazy and happy to sit back and let the game pass revenues just roll in. It should not take nearly a decade to come up with the hardware for a new console. Look at the Ayaneu Kun, a Steamdeck on steroids that has better than series S performance and almost series x matching, in a handheld. A tiny company with a handful of employees can come up with this in next to no time while microsoft with vastly more resources takes 8 years between performance updates. At the glacial rate Microsoft moves at, web TV's might have more power and a better ecosystem by the time the next performance updated console is available.

Four years on from launch and the series x still can't re-connect to a network, has a rubbish non-game eco system with a cringeworthy, incomprehansibly lame interface. Have you looked at the resolution of your player icon lately… WTF?

I'm still playing it due to the sunk cost in my game library, but all future game purchases will be on Steam.

As soon as you have digital games you are more tied to a platform, and that really stinks if the platform can't maintain backwards compatibility. And then you have multiple platforms. The whole thing becomes disposable and non transferable. Even very environmentally unfriendly. So PC/Steam seems the best long term bet. Maybe Sony and MS will stop wasting time on regular home console hardware and just support a common PC platform home console spec. They can focus on the games.

I have had a 120HZ TV with VRR for a long time and early last year I switched to a 120Hz OLED with Freesync and I never had any issues with audio on either Tv.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,579 ✭✭✭sniper_samurai

Which audio format are you using as the delay isn't as noticeable using PCM as it is Atmos or DTS. This issue is not affected by VRR settings, whether it's Freesync or not, this is purely down to the Xbox being unable to process audio quickly enough when running in 4K120 mode.

Xbox Games Showcase event on Sunday which is basically their own replacement for the now defunct E3 event.

It's being reported that MS will unveil the Xbox Portable console and possible also make further announcements on the next gen hardware.

Expect the Activision also to play a significant part, given the eye-watering purchase price of US$68.7B

I’m in the market for an affordable games console and I’ve seen the Xbox one x is comparable to the PS4 but seems to be a more powerful console, is this correct?
I’m looking to be able to play flight simulator and I’d love to be able to play some old classics like Mario kart and sonic etc plus I see killer instinct is on the Xbox?
If I bought a second hand version, do I buy discs or is it download only/either or what works out cheaper?
These could be silly questions but I haven’t had a console since I played final fantasy 7 on the original PS!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 533 ✭✭✭Luna84

Yes the One X is more powerful than the PS4 it was the most powerful console on the market at release.

You can buy discs or buy digital on the Xbox game store.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,221 ✭✭✭✭tom1ie

any idea how much a disc is vs a download?
Also I believe you can store the downloads on an external HD is that true?
Does MS flight sim work well on the console?

  • Registered Users Posts: 533 ✭✭✭Luna84

You have 1TB of storage on the Xbox HDD and yes you can hook up an external drive.

I have no idea how well it play MSFS as it wasn't out back when I had a One X.

If money is tight you'd probably pick up used games cheaper in CEX and the likes. Xbox store does have deals on all the time plus there is also Gamepass with a bunch of game able to be played for a paid subscription.

If you are wanting to play MS Flight Simulator 2020, then the only way the One X can play it is through MS Cloud Gaming service which requires a Game Pass subscription. Also there is a new version of MSFS due for release this year.

Otherwise you will need a Series S or X to play directly on console. In reality the X is the only way to go with MSFS2020. You can pick these for around €300 easy enough, sometimes lower if you are patient.

If you do consider cloud gaming, you dont even need an xbox as you can use other devices like a PC/laptop. Also 2020 and newer Samsung smart TVs also have access to the cloud gaming app.

Theres a separate thread on how to get Game Pass cheaper.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,221 ✭✭✭✭tom1ie

    ok thanks.
I didn’t realise there was a game pass type thing- I thought you just paid for a game online and it downloaded onto the console.
So do you pay a subscription to keep the game on the console or something?

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,221 ✭✭✭✭tom1ie

So a series X is more powerful than an S?

Also I could pickup an x cheaper than a ps5?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,557 ✭✭✭DeSelby83

Think of it as Netflix for games. You won't have everything but you have an awful lot to play including all Microsoft games like flight sim

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,378 ✭✭✭wassie

You can buy games outright, both digitally (download) or physical media (DVD) for playing on console.

Or you can go down the subscription route with Xbox Game Pass - this way you can either download to play on console or stream using the cloud service to a suitable device. But if your sub expires, you lose access to the game.

My suggestion would be checkout Youtube - there are so many videos on this stuff, you will get far more info than you will off a forum.

X - more powerful, more storage and allows physical media, more expensive.

S - less powerful, less storage, digital downloads only, cheaper

Just google what "xbox should i get" and you will find a tonne of articles and videos to best answer this for your own needs.

I would expect an X will be similar pricing to a PS5. Best search for yourself on Donedeal/Adverts.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,221 ✭✭✭✭tom1ie

    excellent.
    Thanks for that info.
One last question- will the quality and playability of the game depend on if you have a physical media game can a streamed game?
ie will the game look better on a disc vs streaming- even if you have a 500mb VM connection on the internet?

  • Registered Users Posts: 533 ✭✭✭Luna84

Digital games are the same as discs. Never stream a game as it will look sh*t. Just play games on the Xbox console.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,378 ✭✭✭wassie

So generally the installed console version would look/run better than streamed version. The Series X can do a max resolution of 4K@120fps, while xCloud (streaming) is capped at 1080p@60fps.

But these are maximum and will depend on

    • the actual game (quite a lot of games dont support full 4k@120fps, i.e. 4K/1080p@60fps max)
    • your TV's max resolution (and possibly the HDMI input spec)
    • your internet speed (also your home wifi setup may influence things)

If you plan on going down the streaming route, a Series S would probably be the better option. MSFS2020 would also run better on xCloud than locally on an S. These can be bought second hand for between €150-200.

Depending on the size & resolution of your TV, gaming at 1080 vs 4K may be perfectly acceptable. Many older TVs support 4K resolution, but only at a max 60fps.

Personally I would forget about the Xbox One altogether as this is old tech and no longer well supported. Many games are optimised for the S & X.

Ah, I think that you are misinterpreting/accidentally being misled. When you were told that FS on the One X was streaming only on gamepass, it might have left you with the impression that gamepass is streaming only. This is not the case.

Gamepass is a collection of games that you can download and install on your console, and play locally while you are subscribed. You do not need the streaming part of the service if you are playing on a Series S or X. I cannot recommend playing on a One X, the Series S is a significant quality of life improvement, with the Series X being better again.

If you get a One X, you will only be able to access older games, and in the case of FS, you would need to get the ultimate version of gamepass for streaming, due to the fact that the One X is not powerful enough to run it locally.

If you have the money, and a 4k TV, then the Series X with gamepass is amazing. If money is a bit tighter, Series S with gamepass is probably good enough for you.

Let me know if you need anymore info!

I have an LG C3 65” tv that supports 4k at 120FPS plus the appropriate HDMI leads so I suppose I’d be better of getting an Xbox series x and buying the actual MSFS game I reckon.
