i think Anthony Kim may have played a Ryder cup one year. Always wondered what happened to him

  • Registered Users Posts: 392 ✭✭Innish_Rebel

Yes exactly... That's what I heard. In order to play on LIV the $10M had to be repaid.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,894 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

I'm sure that wasn't much of a stumbling block, more how much they would throw on top I'd say

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,661 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

Kim shoots 76 in his comeback.

I'm assuming considering how long he's been away we won't see him trouble the top half of the field at any stage.

Had his comeback been 10 years ago it might've been interesting.

You'd have to question what this does for LIV long term though, apart from a bit of curiousity among long time golf fans that watched AK back in the day. You've got a tour whose players constantly moan about world rankings etc and they're inviting a lad that has no status on any tour and hasn't for over a decade? Seems like a step backwards after the Rahm signing.

LIV dgaf, they have an unlimited bankroll and can punt on anything that has the potential to drive numbers up. There are very few losing bets for liv when they can reload every time. AK rediscovering some form would be a bit of romantic nostalgia for a lot of fans. Unless he makes some massive waves there'll barely be a ripple in sports news.

11k watching at the moment! Great coverage in fairness.

Well it's like just admitting what we all know that there is zero sporting integrity or relevance to the tour.

There's lads playing Call of Duty in their bedrooms to a bigger audience

The viewship doesn't seem to be getting close to the club GAA matches on Sundays on TG4. However many billions they've paid for this product, they can't seem to match the likes of a Tipperary county hurling final.

Meronk gets 200k fine for show play. Surprised Kevin Na doesn’t own them money based on his speed of play

Are LIV still paying all their players fines?

A 65 from Kim so that rust must be wearing off.

Liv really is where golfers public image go to die,Koepka ,Rahm Smith et al are all but invisible now, some big egos must be getting pissed off being so far from the limelight.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,502 ✭✭✭Trampas

They miss the limelight so much they keep talking about world ranking points to keep them in it

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,502 ✭✭✭Trampas

I see they’re stealing the European tour idea about doing challenges. Poulter and Hatton a 1 club challenge. They probably complained about not getting ranking points for it

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,502 ✭✭✭Trampas

Masters champion Jon Rahm has called for the LIV Golf League to move to 72 holes and believes his lucrative switch to the breakaway tour could prove a "tipping point" in the ongoing battle for the future of men's professional golf.

    Poor
Westwood and Poulter if they move to 72 holes. They might quit as that’s not what they signed up for

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,149 ✭✭✭big_drive

Rahm is such a competitor it's possible the reality is setting in that he's now part of something without the same bite. The build up to the Masters has probably got him thinking about what he's left behind. Or maybe he's happy enough with all the money, etc. But it's an unusual enough interview to give for someone only there a short period

If only there was some other tour to play on that held 72 hole tournaments.

Or else he should have studied Roman Numerals better at school and figured out what LIV stood for.

Also would be some craic if he gets drawn with Anthony Kim in the next tournament and has to watch him hack it around the course. He'd be wishing that it was called IX then!

I think the relatively quiet build up to the Masters this year (or at least it appears so from my perspective) has really shown the damage LIV has done to the game. There was no real hype or intrigue in the build up, no anticipation of the upcoming major season in the events leading up to the masters (like there used to be) just the Masters pops out of nowhere this week.

Golf as a whole has handled the LIV thing so badly, they should have tried to get them to invest their money in the european tour as a sponsor (like they are doing with tennis) and pump in loads of money that way and not completely ruin the golf landscape like they've done.Coming in as a sponsor like in tennis would have been much more palatable for everyone rather than what they have done and it would have given them better PR than they've gotten from the whole LIV thing. Greg Norman really comes off extremely badly from the whole LIV thing clearly based on his petty dislike of the PGA tour rather than doing anything to help the game.

Think everyone agrees that LIV has completely messed up pro golf at the top level.

Just from Rahms recent comments that Liv should go to 72 hole tournaments and his general demeanour this week I wonder does he regret his move?

I know he has 300 million reasons to not regret it but he always seemed to be ultra competitive and Liv does seem like a weekend golf break away with the lads.

Did he think the two tours were going to merge quicker and he'd make off like a bandit with the loots?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,661 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

There seems to be a belief that Rahm thought the tours were on the verge of a merger so he took the chance and went when he did. He seems to be a fairly competitive individual so I'm sure he misses the competition up to a point, but I'd say he's happy enough with the loot he made at the same time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,113 ✭✭✭benny79

They should of had 72 hole competitions from the start would of solved at lot of problems.. I still hate in and Greg Norman buying a ticket to The Masters what a w*nker

  • Registered Users Posts: 856 ✭✭✭thewobbler

I’m not a fan of anything LiV. I particularly despise their communications strategy.

But for the life of me I’ve no idea why a tournament needs to be 72 holes to be seen as “legitimate”.

just because we’ve always done it that way doesn’t make it right. I’d even harbour a guess that tournaments settled in as 4 days purely to facilitate match play mathematics.

if 54 isn’t enough for a stokeplay tournament surely the same could be said for 72?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,502 ✭✭✭Trampas

Bryson out again with the crocodile tears around liv not in majors. Go with your crocodile tears to Norman. You knew that when you accepted his cheque. There are rules and you should obey by them or else the boards golf society be looking for world ranking points

  • Registered Users Posts: 22 AlanWatts

Rahm is sickened id say. He was already easily worth 100 million and bankable for another 200m rest of his career with everything all in. Mickelson did a job on him id say.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,861 ✭✭✭Russman

That's likely true I'd say. But at the same time, and without getting all socialisty on it, how much is enough ? His official career earnings on the PGAT were $51m, plus €27m in Europe, obviously there's some overlap with Majors and WGCs, but its probably in or around $70m, probably the same again in endorsements, unofficial money etc. I've no particular feelings either way for LIV (although I do like that they're almost doing what the PGAT did/does to the European tour for decades), but I've no sympathy for the players who went with their eyes open and now have buyers remorse.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,502 ✭✭✭Trampas

    Kim hopeless again.

Stenson, Poulter and Westwood must really thank their lucky stars that Norman was stupid enough to throw money at them. They’d be struggling to keep their pga cards

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,823 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

I hate everything about LIV....but would agree ..regular golf events going on for 4 days and 72 holes ..was daft .

Grand for majors ...but after that...

Golf is also too slow ..and LIV suggested it would speed up golf ...but don't watch to know if they have ? Besides shotgun start .

SIgned enough cranks and slow players ..so doubt they would speed up for Anything or anyone..

I don't see a problem with four day tournaments and don't see any viable alternative that would be more entertaining or more lucrative.

The problem with golf at the moment is that it is chasing a market that isn't there and neglecting the market that is there.

The fans, by and large never complained about four day tournaments and generally love that format.
