    Oh FFS.

Why the hell should anatomical features not be named and identified?

They are not giving sex ed and they are not calling it a knob and pussy. This old catholic culture guilt is insane

Because they don't need this kind of instruction, parents can provide it

The Catholic guilt label is tired reductiveness

What is wrong with teaching body parts? Teachers would prefer not to be discussing it too but they are required to do so and they are under no obligation to inform parents of what they will be teaching on a given day. Some crazy comments in this thread.

It was probably viewed as received wisdom a couple of decades ago when it was first muted. Now it's convectional wisdom and it's accepted by both experts and pubic that it's better to use proper anatomical terms for penises, vaginas, vulvas, strotums, testicles etc… just as it is accepted to call fingers fingers and ears ears. In time they'll be saying "a kick in the balls" and "you're a pain in the gee" and all the other fun stuff!! but as young children, it's best they know the proper names for the parts of their bodies.

It's interesting to explore the origins of the terms ."You know, children, penis comes from an old language that nobody speaks any more called Latin. It means tail, any kind of tail.Vagina means a covering made to hold or contain something. It was Latin for a sword holder. What do we call that in English? With this approach there is less likelihood of unhelpful giggling and embarrassment in later years. The makey uppy names for body parts are silly and unnecessary.

Many of those so called experts are activists and ideologues , we will be withdrawing our kids from any instructions related to transgenderism etc

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,543 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

What percentage of parents actually do provide it though?

This is admirable, you are providing the instructions on transgender topics yourself? This is very forward thinking of you!

Didnt take long for this thread to take a turn.

Children should be taught this stuff in school, in a standardised and well thought out way. Leaving it to parents is ridiculous, you'd get all sorts of nonsense being taught.

This thread is an example of why sex education should be mandatory in schools and taken out of the hands of inexperienced, prudish and overly protective parents.

It wasn't a turn, the thread was always going this way.

Is there a requirement for the teacher to consult you personally when she carries out her job in teaching the kids the names of body parts, because that is all this was from your description?

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,544 ✭✭✭John_Rambo

Oh right, I honestly didn't see this coming. But you're way off & on the verge of paranoia here.

Teaching boys and girls the proper names for their body parts has nothing to do with transgenderism. In fact by teaching them proper & appropriate nomenclature it's differentiating the sexes, not confusing them.

Now I see why it's sometimes up to teachers to teach kids stuff they should know from home.

    Ok troll agenda unmasked.

Goodnight and good luck. Plenty other places to rehash all this elsewhere.

    Thread closed.

Having the correct names is important for many reasons , one of which is child protection. I can’t understand the objection to using the correct name of a body part .
We encourage children to stop calling trains choo choo or dog bow wows as their speech develops . Why on earth would people not want to use the proper language in this instance.
