'Can I have that car for a 100 euro if I promise to promote your business every minute of every day?'

    Problem solved for Marty.

If it took Kevin this long to implement this rather watered down policy, there’s no hope of real change in RTÉ.

I have heard stories of Marty and the Mummy not paying their bills. It is not a gift if the invoice goes unpaid!

My issue is that he's a terrible game commentator - which is the core part of his job. RTE could do a lot better at a fraction of the cost.

How do I get on the RTE gravy train?

1.. have a relative in Montrose

2..Have been a student activist in your College days

3..Have been a leading light in a students union

4.. Have gone to Blackrock, Gonzaga, St Andrews..etc

5.. Have a Daddy or Mammy with lots of money

6..Have performed in RTE as a member of the Billie Barry troupe in your young days.

7..Befriend someone in RTE who drinks in Goggins or the Purty Kitchen.

8..Have taken a leading role in some lockout, protest, riot, eviction, or cause .

9..Have a D4 accent 'sau strong' you could cut it with a knife.

10.. Have travelled the world at other peoples expense trying to find yourself.

That should put you on par with most of the staff out there, this poster would opine.

The language used is revealing and quite comical.

Any policy I ever wrote always said what employees must, or must not do. I never 'urged' anyone!

    11. Have a blog or social media presence that garners you an award or award nomination for the some 'social media event' that nobody has heard of. This has become more annoying with the likes of TikTok or Instagram.

I knew someone like this. It was still early days of social media, late 2000s, early 2010s. Round the time folks were more and more able to access the web from their phones, and tablets. She created a presence online, ran a blog, posted quite a bit. Parents were pretty well off, had a house in Spain or Portugal, as well as one or two in Ireland. She got a tryout for RTE, a 5 minute segment on TwoTube, or TwoTV (whatever was the 'young people's' programming at the time). Seemed like she might actually get a job in TV, to the outsider. She graduated, and did pretty well by all accounts.

Well, a year goes by-no calls. She's blogging, and complaining that her Degree is gathering dust. Goes to the USA, starts bragging about all the interviews she's getting. But it never goes anywhere. (Meanwhile, parents are funding this trip). Her visa runs out after a year.

She came home. Stopped blogging. Retrained in something else. I think, even in the 2010s, late 2010s, it became apparent that without a connection, you weren't getting into the media.

By big social media presence RTE thinks having a 1000 followers means you are the next big thing (can't remember the womans name who got a job based on that) - showing how out of touch they are in RTE, wow 1000 people follow you, you must be big, here's a job

God, there's so many of them who've done that-there's one in Fair City right now, who claims to be a comedian… but who's stuff is just 'skits' on instagram. It's how she got the gig on Fair City.

There's a presenter who was on one of the RTE jr shows who started life as an 'online' comedian. She was actually pretty intelligent, was studying law and then did a Masters in media.

There's been quite a few who've gotten gigs over the years from youtube, social media, or the likes. Rubberbandits had been doing quite well, in Ireland, but couldn't parlay it to the UK. And I'll at least give them credit, they did do stage performances. So they worked on their skills. It wasn't all just 'online' comedy. Takes guts to get in front of an audience.

But they didn't connect in the UK.

It's actually Mafia type scary the amount of cash handed over to breda o'keeffe as a literal parting gift by Dee, considering how much she was begging for money to help the cash strapped company she was running into the ground

I'm not even sure the amount of cash on that table would reach the amount!!?

Imagine what she could have done if she got the funds she was looking for..... she could have easily doubled the golden hand shakes,,, honestly are the government going to take any meaningful action, obviously not as many seem to be walking away with their own lump sums,,,an absolute disgrace.

If your talking about the same actress in FC that I am think of she is daughter of the guy that played Johnny One, she's fairly useless I always thought he wasn't bad, I think the FC producers feel sorry for her because I think he ended up in a pretty bad way due to drugs. Her acting skills are much more like the rest of the Fair City cast, fairly shite.

I think I know who you're thinking of, but I'm thinking of that 'new' family in Fair City (the one that recently recast the daughter, bizarrely-tho the new actress is really fit, so no complaints :) ). The one playing the mother, Ali Fox, claims to be a comedian… but she's a comedian on social media (or a 'content creator' if you don't find her funny).

Apparently, someone in RTe paid attention to her, during the lockdown, and that got her a gig on Fair City.

I did not know that about Roxanna Nic Liam's dad. That's really sad, that a promising career got derailed so quickly. No wonder she uses her writing and poetry as therapy. I know she's spoken of her own issues with addiction.

The human cost of RTE "management" and its "self-employment" thing:

    https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/she-said-theres-no-such-thing-as-a-job-for-life-ex-2fm-dj-keith-walsh-on-his-desperate-plea-to-dee-forbes-to-keep-his-job/a127854407.html

That Dee Forbes excuse is looking more threadbare by the day. At this stage, it is looking like only a new government will be the only way that the actions of RTE management, past and present, will be properly examined.

    Regards…jmcc

So we now know that Jon Williams got an exit payment to leave. Previously we knew that he had as part of his pay packet been given trips to NYC to go to board meetings on some board he is on, nothing to do with his work in RTÉ but sure here's some money to support your other work that has nothing to do with RTÉ. You have to assume he received moving expenses. He also took a trip home during the semi-lifting of COVID restrictions, but of course the trip was paid for by RTÉ, no problem with him visiting home but to have it paid for by the National Broadcaster! Also everyone was in the same situation so you get little sympathy when pulling out the sympathy card.

Meanwhile 2 weeks before his hospital appointment Jimbo Jennings attended the 2023 final of UFEA champions league. He according to RTÉ went into hospital for an operation on the 26th (I assume routine), he's been out sick from RTÉ with pay for the last year! and he still expenses newspaper subscriptions to his company credit card!

Does anyone here get a year of sick leave in the place of work? Good time in RTÉ.

I would opine that those happenings were widespread in RTE…..I wonder who paid for all the Orlando trips during the GR days.

There seemed to be a a thin mist between work done in RTE and “outside activities”.

Seems that a large percentage of on air folk were involved in outside activities and apparently there was a somewhat murky distinction between the two activities as presented by recent occurrences.

    Why did Jon Williams leave?

I see the story in the mail about Jon Williams traveling to the UK in July 2020, a time when RTE were telling the general public that they had to "staycation" to "beat Covid". as an aside, nobody in the media ever mentioned how katherine Zappone returned to America after leaving cabinet in Summer 20 when the general political & media narrative was that air travelers were super spreaders.

It may be to do with the Nally review? I doubt it but it is one possibility but the other possibility is that Dee wanted to get rid of him?

    https://www.rte.ie/news/2024/0417/1444013-tv-licence-inspector/

Everyone get your violins ready. Apparently TV licence inspectors are having a hard time on doorsteps throughout the country. Who would have thought that calling to someones door and demanding money from them to pay for entertainment they probably don't watch, under threat of going to court and possible to prison, would be unpopular.

The tone of the article is hilarious, the surprise that a once docile and compliant public are now hostile and speaking their minds. Even being asked by members of the public to justify why they must pay a TV licence. The humanity.

Oh won't someone please think of the poor Licence inspectors. They will be like that other much maligned group the clampers. 😀

Interesting to see Joe and Her have headlines criticising an RTÉ programming The Full Irish Hidden Camera Show

    https://www.joe.ie/movies-tv/rte-show-slammed-as-the-worst-programme-ever-made-798241

    https://her.ie/entertainment/rte-show-slammed-as-the-worst-programme-ever-made-604161

The publication is very slow to move on any criticism of anything in these types of articles.

Could they not guess that it is not a great show by the promotional picture taken for the show,

    image.png

I suppose we just have to think about how wonderful 2FM presenters are.

That's 3 invoices of €10k a month that RTÉ have to pay on our behalf.

Has Forbes ever actually said what is wrong with her? Months later and she still isn't fit to answer some questions by email! Is she in a coma?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,511 ✭✭✭RoTelly

She's just feeling sorry for herself, they put it down the mental health issues and you can't really argue with that.

RTÉ 2FM's breakfast show hosts and hosts of the Hidden Irish Camera Show: -

Donnacha O'Callaghan (Former Irish Rugby Player)

Doireann Garrihy (a self styled comedian and impersonator)

    Carl Mullan (Former RTÉ intern)

Do you not see how hilarious they are from that photo ?
