Car was registered yesterday morning but still can't tax it, how long does it take for it to appear on their DB?

    Details Incorrect (please see below)

    • The combination of registration number and PIN entered was not valid. Please check you have entered the correct vehicle registration number and current PIN.

When I vrt my car, the person in the VRT said it can take a day or two. I was able to do it on the Sunday after vrt it on the Friday morning (I didn't try any other days)

Note beware if you get solar now on an old night rate meter you get NOTHING for export until ESB networks swaps your meter

If you have a real old style day/night meter

From September 2023, ESB Networks will start installing smart meters for customers with day/night meters.

If your micro-generator was installed prior to 11 September 2023, you'll be entitled to a microgen payment until your smart meter is installed.

If your micro-generator is installed and approved after 11 September 2023, you will not qualify for a microgen payment until your smart meter is installed.

You tax it online using the last 6 digits of the vin as the pin. You can probably do it now if you know the vin. It can take 2 days to appear on the motor tax website.

Once taxed, the VLC will issue within the week.

Admittedly I've only bought 1 brand new car but I could have sworn my dealer made me tax it before leaving, did it on the day I collected in the dealership. I paid for it though.

Maybe they just did it as a courtesy to help me, my mistake I thought it was general practice.

Interesting. Ist that networks policy (as they are the ones who send microgen data to the supply companies) or just BGE cutting costs I wonder.

Two days I found, it might be up this evening, if not it will be up tomorrow.

It was a courtesy. I taxed the eNiro in the dealer (Kia Navan Road) when collecting back in 2021. It was a case of the dealer just opening the motor tax website and letting me fill in the card details.

Are there any tutorials or guides for details on getting this set up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66,643 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Set what up? The DIY battery? There is an excellent guide here on the renewables forum for doing just that. And trust me, several people who don't consider themselves at all handy and who had never done anything like that before, have built their own based on that thread and sometimes with a little help from other forum members. Have a good look!

Personally I love people spending a fraction on renewable setups compared to having hem installed by greedy installers. This not only gives you a much better insight into how these systems work, it will also give you a much quicker payback period and / or allows you to install a much more substantial system for your budget

Mind this guide is from 2 years ago when most people used 16 CALB 200Ah cells for a 10kWh setup. Now most people use EVE 300Ah cells for a 15kWh setup, which in practice is about twice the usable size (for roughly the same money total spent)

I thought this would be simple to get an answer to....going to NI for a weekend. Can I simply use the ESB public charging network up there?

Phoned ESB and the answer is yes.

Yes, beware network in general is worse. Consider other networks, see plugshare, there are various non esb networks in some places and they tend to be better, depending on where you are going. You are more likely to get stuck in NI

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 807 ✭✭✭CivilEx

ESB public charging in NI has a far higher percentage of AC units rather than DC (which are all 50kW max I think), but the same app / RFID card works fine. Tap & Pay works on NI DC chargers generally, but use Google pay / Apple Pay on your phone rather than your bank card as the pre-authorisation is £50.

Whereabouts are you heading? Ionity, Maxol or BP Pulse might be better bets if heading to Belfast

Sorry this is probably off topic- mod(s) feel free to move this post, but I find this interesting - how much would it cost in panels, inverters, ESBN fees, contractor fees etc to get a system that would generate the ma. Available and export the max available as a private customer as opposed to a commercial customer?

How long would it take to pay off the initial outlay?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,109 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

That's a how long is a piece of string question unfortunately.

There's a lot of helpful info in the Renewable Energies forum on here. You'll find a fair few EV posters from here, there too.

+1 for the renewables forum, but quickest way is to look at the quotes thread there, talk to a few installers yourself and look at various electricity plans for feed in

There's threads dedicated to all of those over in the RE forum

I was in Belfast in Jan (before Ionity opened) and I used the Maxol Recharge site in Kinnegar, where it was a very good experience to be fair. It was the third location that I stopped at that day though as both the BP Pulse and the EasyGo chargers I tried were out of order. @zg3409 makes a good point about the reliability of charging units in NI. You are so relieved to find one that works that you don't care about the price per kWh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,003 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Yeah I've used the Maxol site as well and it's very good

I haven't been up since the Ionity hub opened but I'd probably use it because it's less of a detour

Agree on the AC chargers. I actually found it handy enough to parkup and charge overnight in NI last year on holiday. Took all the stress out of planning for chargers during the day. Just lower the charge rate so it was nearly full by the time we went to set off next day.

You can't tax a brand new car online, for the first time you have to go into your local car tax office and tax it and everything is then okay yearly from there. This is what the girl in the tax office told me, explaining that due to been a new car there is no previous record to go to online.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,733 ✭✭✭joe1303l

Rubbish. That lady must be keen to keep footfall numbers up in your local motor tax office.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭wassie

Yep. All info is on the motor tax website here. Most important is the Vehicle Registration Certificate (as @CoBo55 posted) and the RF100 form provided by the Motor Dealer. Don't need insurance details anymore either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,032 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Yes you can, I've done it with 3 cars. I've outlined what's needed, end of. Don't be spouting rubbish.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,215 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

ehh, yes you can. And have been able to do for many years. By default all new registered cars have their pin set to the last 6 digits of the vin.

People have been known to rock up to the garage on collection day with the tax disc already in their hands.

I taxed the eNiro in the garage while we were waiting on the keys to be handed over. That was back in 2021, and even then it was known, well established procedure.

Give some of you a laugh.

Brother in law called over earlier. Literally said hello then "I bought a VW ID3 and I'm telling you, combustion engines are done".

This is a lad who has owned various 911's and high powered BMW's. A complete petrol head. Had a fully specced 7 series that went in for repair work and they gave him and ID3 as a courtesy car for a few days. After a day he told them he'd take an ID3 and they could give him the difference back on the beemer!!

He's going next week to buy the Taycan turbo. Reckons he'll pick up one for decent money and he'll keep the ID3 as a runaround.

He has a lots of land and is looking at a big solar fit out as well. Was laughing and saying to me "jaysus I should have listened to you years ago. I just plug it in at night once or twice a week and I've a full tank in the morning for a few quid".

I never thought I'd see the day he'd give petrol the boot!!

I haven't seen the tax office in years, I remember having to go to the Naas tax office, take a ticket and wait for your number to show up. lol wow, we really have it handy now but it was a chance to chat to people in the queue to pass the time, a lot of younger folk now wouldn't talk to strangers.

What's worse is that I lived 10 Km from the Carlow Tax office, in Kildare but had to go to Naas lol. That used to annoy me a lot.

Great story. And one that gets lost in here so much. Relative new comers come in and assume it’s a hippy forum with tweed suits drinking tea watching the grass grow. They forget that many regulars were big car heads for many years. Time moves on. Technology moves on. Just because someone drives an EV doesn’t mean they can’t respect a nice ICE. The flat 4 burble of an STi Impreza actually interests me more than a Porsche GT3 RS (but I still wouldn’t say no to one!)

Yeah until the novelty wears off and you want to drive something a bit more fun with gears and engine sound lol.
