That's so far above the heads of most dodgy box users it's almost in space.

Is there an app more generally available for android TV that does recording actually does anybody know? That's the one area I miss, especially for sports like F1 that have races inconveniently in the middle of the day... I know most providers have catch-up, but you have to wait for the event to be over before it's there, and the quality (at least on my services) is usually lower.

A VPN can be directly installed onto the device without affecting your home network, so only the device itself uses the VPN. Most VPN's installation and software interfaces are extremely user-friendly.

But to a lot of people it's way above their heads.

A great many people are terrified of IT.

For you or I a VPN might be simple, but we are the exception rather than the rule.

A person I know who's service has been dark during EPL games recently has been told by his supplier that he needs a VPN, he's totally flumixed by it, he doesn't know what it is or how it's supposed to help him, he kept referring to it as a "VPN number".

He's fairly typical of the normal person out there that uses a dodgy box.

I get your point but the only response or advice that I could give to someone who is typical of what you have described is that if for example they are using an Android smartphone, they must have some proficiency using the smartphone user interface. Google purposely make the "Google Play Store" app easy to find. By opening that app they can easily find a VPN via the search facility and purchase it.

If they are using IPTV via a platform such as an Android TV box, they must also have some proficiency using the Android TV user interface as they have with their smartphone. Again, Google purposely make the "Google Play Store" app easy to find on the Android TV user interface. By opening that app and doing exactly what they did on their smartphone, they can easily find that VPN that they have purchased and then install it on the Android TV box.

The most complex part is probably the initial purchase using their smartphone but the installation and use of the VPN on the box is straight forward from there-in.

I know Express VPN have an extremely easy to use interface and it's default settings are to the needs of the typical user.

In my family (including in laws) Im installing / setting up the IPTV then the bat phone goes any time anything needs sorted nevermind a VPN. I dont mind at all but I think maybe this could be a typical situation. 1 "tech guy" in the family keeps the whole IPTV show on the road. No way Im adding a VPN to the mix. Im not a masochist 🤣

If ISP's start throttling or blocking supply IP's, you may need to consider it.

Haven't come across an android app that is reliable for recording tbh. Tivimate has the functionality but I can never get it to work reliably.

Using tivimate catch-up on the service I have allows you to watch the show from the start even if it's still on. It works very well but like you say none of the FHD channels have catch-up enabled, only the HD channels.

For sure. Dont trouble trouble until trouble troubles you. For now I'll watch this thread for good VPN tips.

As a 60 something female who is a new firestick user quite a bit of this thread is above my head - but using a VPN is not hard - come on, I am not tech minded, was the last of my friends to get a mobile phone, prefer using the laptop. But I use Nord VPN - have used Express in the past, just got a better deal this time on Nord. They make it simple to download and use, I really think they are as user friendly as they can be!! That's as far as I go, android boxes, tivimate, and lots of other terms I see on here are totally over my head!!

That's quite impressive, my mother is 70 and I still have regular video calls from her on a range of simple technical problems that I want to bang my head on a wall over 😩

Explaining a VPN, dear God I'd rather pay her sky bill 😂

My dad rings me about the "dodgy box" too, it's hard to help him when the camera is aimed at the floor.

What model of homeplugs are you using? Looking for something similar to my own shed.

Ive had a firestick lite (dont hate on me) for a few years now, and its time to upgrade as its just not up to the app Im using.

Id love to get some hints\tips\advice on what folks would recommend.

I use odroid N2+ single board computers. It has the CPU power to cope with any task and you can run Android on it so all android apps are available. I personally use Coreelec because it better fits my use case.

But are you more tech minded than an average 60 something? You might not think it but in my experience you are. If you've ever given I.T. support to family members its not the ones who can set up and troubleshoot a VPN you'll be talking to. The start of COVID was great craic. Everyone looking for support and all had to be done remotely.

Newest 4k firestick, chromecast. If the budget allows Formuler Z11 or Nvidia Shield. My original shield is on the way out so I'm going for the Formuler next

I wouldn't skimp on the hardware, some people forget you are saving 1000's by using these services and don't want to spend more than 30 quid on a device, its strange.

Well if I am then great - work outdoors, not in an office - all I need now is a decent service provider!!

The way Amazon seem to be going with their hardware, I wouldn't invest in a firestick. They seem to be progressively making it harder to change settings or install 3rd party apps in recent times.

A Shield Pro (2019) is still the gold standard IMO.

Agreed, hardware is sorted it's finding one of the better providers that is the tricky part.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,457 ✭✭✭SharkMX

I agree. I was all for the firesticks. Got lots of friends to get them too. Had them years. I needed a new one for another tv and with all this messing that amazon are doing with them decided that im leaving the firesticks behind now and using other options. Just trying to figure out what to get next but its not going to be a firestick.

Are the xiaomi Mi Boxes still on the go? liked them back in the day for its Android TV offering

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,375 ✭✭✭jj880

I looked into their latest box (S 2nd Gen) before getting TOX3. Seems to be a great streaming box supporting a lot of formats but let down by some skimping my Xiaomi on the ram / storage / some components. 2gb/8gb, no ethernet port and 1 x usb 2 port.

I prefer to use apps that run on the Apple TV (I know not everyone likes Apple 😝) but it’s well specced and runs smoothly. We have quite a few around the house. I prefer SupaTV app and then just find yourself a good supplier and you’re sorted. I found Firesticks could be laggy and as others have said it’s in their interest these days to try stop people side loading iptv apps

I dunno what VPN services ye are all using that cripples your download speed.

The only time I had that happen was when I used one of the free VPN services.

Now I use ProtonVPN and get above 800Mb/s on my 1Gb/s service.

I am in Ireland with VPN showing I am in UK

Same here. Quick check just now using fast.com.

    • No VPN: 330 Mbps
    • VPN to France (randomly picked a country): 250 Mbps

Slower? Yes. Slow enough to actually notice? Nope.

I'm with Surfshark. Don't use a free VPN...

I don't know if anyone is aware or has some insight into this but from my experience Express VPN doesn't seem to like wired /ethernet connections. I am unable to connect to the internet using ethernet via Express VPN when the VPN is enabled. It will only work on Wifi. I am using an Android box running Android 9. I think this is a specific issue for Express VPN for which they have not addressed.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues when trying to use a VPN via ethernet?
