I don't agree with it, but I believe the Oireachtas golf "society" is open to all members, so could it be called a select group??

Callan kicks the year was played in his Saturday slot. probably just a one off schedule swap because of the holidays.

The new fulltime presenter is to be announced this week.

Out of the four or five guest presenters. I think Callan was probably the best.

A little dispointed with Shay, I like his early morning show and I think he is a great music presenter. But he is weak at the interviews. That may change over time.

Brendan was so so. He has his hobby horses and he brings them up a lot. I don't need to hear anymore that he has a masters degree either.

Maura, well the less said about that the better really.

Please don't let it be Kathryn 🙏🙏

The Indo said rte were in negotiations with Callan, but the pay was the sticking point, as he could earn more from other commercial interests.

Then Kevin should let Callan go to other commercial interests. RTE is a cosy 1 hour gig with a very large production team as backup.

I think the sticking point is not so much pay as the freedom to do other stuff.

I would not be surprised if it is Brendan O'Connor. In fact, I would say it probably will be.

It’s like saying your cleaner that you employ for 5 hours a week can’t clean any other houses for the rest of the time. This show is not a full time job. Either accept that or do a Newstalk and run a 3 hour morning show

With RTE cutbacks announced a few months ago, I would hope they will fulfil this promise and utilise a current permanent RTE staffer to present this slot, rather than the additional cost of taking on contractor presenter ?

Good shout maybe he likes the weekend gig though.

Really hope it's not Kathryn Thomas

Christ, why even key this slot? I liked Shay actually. Nice laid back guy. Is anyone else not seeing the obvious here though. Extend Claire Byrne an hour and let her start lighter or have her dive straight into the big ticket items and have her do a wind down lighter hour before Louise. Let’s not forget, this slot was created for Tubbs as it’s the form in RTE that the Late Late guy has also got a mid morning prime radio slot. Gaybo and Kenny were able to carry a full length morning show. Tubbs couldn’t and was given a pity fúck show just to justify his high cost. He’s gone so that show should also go.

Would agree that a contractor or someone outside of Rte's employ should NOT get it.

They are bust, let someone who is already being paid by rte do it.

Definitely not one of NKM stable. That should be a given.

So only people with weaker “representation” should be considered?

No, but I would like to think the new boss of rte, faced with trying to run a bankrupt company, would insist that the new host come from those already on the payroll, rather than hiring in another outside contractor.

Patrick Kielty lives in London and has his own show on BBC Radio 5 Live.

plenty of RTE staffer presenters wandering the corridors of RTE that could do the job

Blathnaid ni Chofaigh (,or good old Brenda), your time has come!

Brenda! They couldn’t be that foolish surely.

I know. It’s just impractical for him to do a Mon-Fri Rte Radio spot but that’s not the point I was making. RTE have, at least for now, broken the link between LLS and a national radio morning slot. Why not go all in and cancel the slot and get Claire to take up the slack. You’re not paying another presenter and but supporting another research and production team as well.

Where did they find this one talking about her fertility journey this morning? She sounds like a right pain in the hole. I feel sorry for her fella.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,441 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

I didn't catch it. How bad can she be. This sort of guest would have been pretty regular back when Tubs ran the show.

Maybe it is just time to extend Claires show.

I have no idea who The 9 O'Clock show is aimed at. Other then people who forget to change the radio after Morning Ireland.

Sorry Shay, I do love your music show in the morning.

Tubbs would have been rock hard interviewing this woman. Total misery slot. Too old to naturally conceive, multiple IVF sessions not taking, some alcoholism, crying, therapy. She sounded like she just wanted a wide outlet for her misery. I’m not sure rrally why she was on. She was definitely the wrong guest for that show. It’s shears been a light enough period between morning Ireland and Claire. It Ray should have been an item for CB to cover I’d have thought.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,441 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

Jesus, who thought it was a good idea having her on?

Who wants to listen to that?

    Was she on promoting?

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 10,562 Mod ✭✭✭✭squonk

Honestly I don’t know. I got so put off listening to the whole palaver. You know I actually think she was just on to talk about her experience. She might have had therapy but it doesn’t sound like she’s completely over the whole thing given the tears. She really shouldn’t have been on. I’m not even sure of the benefit for other women in a similar situation. Oh, yeah, she’s an actor or something like that so I suppose she got in that way. Still, you’d have hoped that the production crew would have sussed her out beforehand.

That show has been 9-10AM for a long long time now. It was 9-11 fur years but was shortened towards the ends of Gay Byrne's on air career in the late 90's, with the mid morning show starting earlier. It remained an hour from 2000 when both Duffy and Finuncane tried and failed to make it their own; ironically the slot only settled into its own when Tubbs first moved into the fame.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,870 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

    Not forgetting John Murray

Remember Gareth O'Callaghan used to present it too ? He had been on the production team for Gay around that time, 1996 I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,441 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

Jesus, thats sounds pretty fupping weird. I might give it a listen back.

If you can't fill the hour and need to rely on misery porn. It is time to kill the show.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 10,562 Mod ✭✭✭✭squonk

I might listen back myself as I was working at the time so wasn’t giving it full attention. It’s funny though. The interview started brightly eight. She was sitting or at least based in or around bondi beach and making a thing out of that. It struck me before it went any further that she was kind of over egging that fact. She seemed ‘off’ to me.

Only by default did Tubridy settle his arse into the chair. O'Rourke was doing a decent job 1000-1200 and Tubridy was a meaningless filler. Lost more listeners than gained I'd wager.
