You ever watched Stockdale under a high ball? He’s as good as any winger in Ireland.

I agree his tackling can be shocking at times though

I'd like to see both get decent gametime. I think it would be more beneficial for all than expecting Furlong to shoulder a heavy workload in the 6N after limited gametime in the previous few months. We are going to need all three of them for the tour in SA. Bealham and TOT need more minutes at international level and Furlong needs minding.

Stockdale has been very good this season. If he gets called up (I'd be shocked if he didn't), he'll deserve it.

He'd definitely be ahead of Baloucoune

With our oversupply of high standard locks/flankers, lack of form for Henshaw and complete shitshow in the back three and outhalf, the 6/2 split with Frawley in the 23 jersey becomes a very viable option right now although I'm not sure they'll risk it.

That would allow us potentially have Henderson, Ryan, Beirne and McCarthy all in the 23 although I'd be equally of a mind to look at one sub lock with Baird and Conan on the bench too.

Lowe pictured involved in Leinster training yesterday. Has been involved previously but independently. Was training with the overall group yesterday as was Furlong (who has been training with the group for a couple of weeks).

Ross Byrne training/running alone so I'd imagine the earliest he could be back playing rugby is round 3/4.

With Carbery getting back on the field this weekend, there was an outside chance of him being recalled to the squad as the third outhalf but I'd imagine yesterday's announcement has scuppered that possibility.

I haven't seen anything in Larmour's form this season that would excite me. He's been ok, but has underachieved for many years now. His running is very lateral, and I don't trust him under the high ball.

But in addition to these basic concerns, I don't see guys like him or Baloucoune having the creative footballing approach which Farrell wants. Now this may be something that can be corrected, it's hard to tell because both players are locked into provincial systems which function on a different model, could they adapt?

Based on what I've seen, I'd prefer to see Nash and TOB.

I thought Stockdale was ok. He's still not back to his 2018 form. Yes he'll be in the squad but hopefully Lowe will start.

Im a big fan of Baloucoune. Thought he looked uncharacteristically weak in the tackle v Connacht and Leinster.

He would be the person I'd want starting at 14 but I presume it will be Nash.

Hanson is a massive loss and it's compounded by Conway retiring. That leaves Lowe as our best wing with several average lads vying for a chance.

Hanson is the only wing we have that would be close to world class!

As an Ulster fan neither Stockdale or Baloucoune have been great. Occasionally above average but certainly a long way off starting in a 6N match, although we may not have a choice.

Hopefully someone pops up the way Hansen did a few years ago and surprise us all.

It's concerning that there's nobody within a shout of taking a wing slot.

I wouldn't lump them together. Stockdale has been much better than Baloucoune, who has been very quiet and now looks unsure of himself.

Stockdale has been improving and was the last winger to be sent home from the extended RWC squad, if I recall? So I'd say he's up first.

If it was the end of last season, I think Nash would've been in with a great shout of starting in Hansen's place. He seems the sort of winger Farrell likes but he hasn't quite hit the heights so far this season.

If Lowe doesn't make it back in time, I think I'd like to see Stockdale starting in his place.

Yeah I agree with this - for the first half of 2023 I thought Nash was absolutely trending in the right direction and looked to he playing at an international quality level.

He hasn’t looked anywhere near that this season though IMO.

I think he’s still the guy I’d go for ahead of Larmour or Baloucoune or Shane Daly right now.

    Jamie Osborne to 14 ??

He’s a good footballer but lacks top end pace (by even Irish winger standards IMO) and also has the issues with staying healthy enough.

I think TOB has a better shot if he gets to start these two upcoming European games and shines.

A guy who gets no buzz but who I rate very highly as a really good nuts and bolts player is Rob Russell. Not touting him for Ireland here yet, but would have no issues seeing him get an extended run for Leinster over the next few months.

Baloucoune has more potential upside than Stockdale. He's better defensively too, by a good bit imo. I'd hope that Farrell et al could get him into a good headspace if they had him in camp. He went well against SA, I thought the team could've looked to get him the ball in space. I know the gameplan is predicated on wings coming, and it's a certainly a work on for him, but use his speed! He has something exceedingly rare for Irish wingers.

I think that's completely wrong on Stockdale to be honest. He hasn't been perfect, but his levels have risen significantly this season.

Great news but this last week has really highlighted that Ireland are not producing top level wingers.

I completely agree, his levels have risen but he's been poor for a quite a long time (coming of the back off injuries). He can def do a job for Ireland but is not at the level of Lowe or Hansen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,316 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

No-one is. So what do we do? Not field wingers?

I also don't particularly want to see Lowe coming straight in to play for Ireland with no game time, or one Leinster game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,708 ✭✭✭ersatz

Yeah, swings and roundabouts. We could export back rowers at the moment, but a few injuries to the back three and we are in real trouble. Just a pity that Stockdale and Balacoune in particular seem to have stalled out in their development. Both had real promise. Then Conway forced into retirement and other than JOB that next generation not really delivering yet.

With the level of training for Leinster and Ireland, plus he is supposed to start at weekend....also they normally have a behind the doors game with Ireland like they done before, I would expect if fit Lowe will start

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,316 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Oh I half-expect it as well. But whether it's the best option, time will tell (if it happens).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,088 ✭✭✭Clo-Clo

James Lowe on the wing is not going to be the winning or losing of the game in France I woudl expect.

That will be the numbers 1-8

    Erm... Okay.

I mean I don't disagree at all, but does that mean you don't worry about who lines out in the backs as long as you've a good pack?

There are plenty of decisions that aren't the crucial factors in the winning or losing of the game that you still want to get right.

Listening to the Radio last night and they were giving serious thought and consideration to playing ringrose on the wing due to the injury crisis. This was to allow for Henshaw to come back into the centre. Are we that short on wingers that we would rather entertain the idea of bringing in an injury prone centre instead of giving the like of Nash or Balacoune or Daly, or a number of others a shot.

I'd rather an actual winger played on the wing and I have to be honest, I would be worried about Henshaw at this stage. I don't think getting him on the pitch is the slam-dunk it once was. The underlying assumption that it will be fine to move Ringrose, Henshaw will step in, is reflective more of his reputation than anything we've seen from him since the start of the RWC.
