Rent Tax credit now available to claim for 2023.

You can only claim for the rent paid until now so it probably makes sense to wait until you pay enough rent to get full refund back (2500 for single claimant and 5000 for a couple).

It is 20% of 2500/5000 you get back.

That's the limit you can claim for. For the whole year.

    Hope that makes sense.

You can claim as soon as you paid enough rent, but they will add it to your tax credit so rather than having lump sum sent to your account you will pay less tax for the rest of the year.

So let's say you will claim with 10 months left you will pay 50 euro less tax each month.

I will have paid €2500 by the end of May as my rent is €500 per month. Can I claim back the €500 then as a full refund or do I’ve to wait till later in the year to file the 2023 income tax return?

I’ve already received the 2022 refund. I was going to have it reduce my tax over the 2023 year but would prefer the full refund in one lump sum

Then you'll have to wait till Jan 2024 to claim back.

Anyone using an Umbrella company still awaiting this?

No. Why would you? A statement of liability is the result of you filing a tax return for a prior tax year. What you have done is claimed a real time credit for the active tax year 2023. This has been added to your tax credits for 2023. Your tax credits will now be adjusted by your employer and may result in a small refund to you based on tax paid since the start of the year. You will also pay slightly less tax through the rest of 2023.

Could anyone advise if you rent a room in your landlords house, ie have a licence agreement rather than a registered tenancy, then that you can claim the 2×€500 cost of living tax credits for renters?

If you can what information do you need to provide and who do you provide it to?

Also curious to know this, I have a rent a room situation with my landlord but he is not registered

*Yes. Just submit claim with landlords name and address.

    * You cannot be related to the landlord for the relief to apply

Yes, if not related to you. Landlords availing of rent a room relief are not obliged to register with RTB, so not applicable

I assume from the budget announcement if you claim this tax credit in a lump sum the increase to €750 won't be available until January 2025 and the refund in January 24 will still be €500?

the RTB should know about everyone living there though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭GerardKeating

Yeah, but revenue ask for the RTB "details" for the tennancy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 977 ✭✭✭crinkley

but everyone resident is supposed to be on the rtb files so if there was any audit and revenue are paying credit to 6 people but rtb only knows of one it may raise a couple of flags.

But that's assuming that agencies would work together to catch our fraudsters but I'm not that confident

Does anyone know what date in January we can apply for rent credit from 2023?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,180 ✭✭✭relax carry on

Whenever the 2023 tax return is available on your Revenue myaccount which should be the 1st of January.

Filed my tax return for 2023 on New Years Day, should have it soon. Hopefully get the €500 and maybe an income tax refund too. It’s just a shame we’ve to wait till next year for the €750

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 422 ✭✭sh89000

I was able to apply for the 750 the week before Christmas. Anyone know when we should expect it in accounts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 876 ✭✭✭Ronney

Its a Tax credit so it will increase your take home pay by €62.50 each month in 2024 if you have already applied for it. Above posters are now claiming back the full €500 from last year, alternatively they could have been getting back €41.66 a month in 2023

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 126 ✭✭Iggy1986

You wouldn’t have been able to do it before Christmas, the max is €500 for 2023 not €750. That won’t change till next year unfortunately

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,755 ✭✭✭lbunnae

just to note you can apply for the 750 this year but you will have to have paid 3750 personally in rent until you are eligible for the whole credit to be applied to your wages and it will be divided out for the rest of the year. Alternatively you can wait till Jan 1 2025 and claim back then.

So if I'd applied for 500 I would have gotten that into my account? Got 500 into account last year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,180 ✭✭✭relax carry on

From your first post it sounds like you added the 2023 rent tax credit to your 2023 tax credits using the PAYE services section of your Revenue Myaccount. That doesn't generate a refund of tax from Revenue. It just reduces the amount of tax you pay during the active tax year. In your case 2023. However by the time you did it the way you did, it was pointless as no new tax credit certificates were issuing at that time of year.

If you want to claim relief for the 2023 tax year, go file your annual tax return and add the credit there.

Anyone else experiencing long wait time for the €750? Waiting more than a week - it was pretty much instant last time

Do you mean as a lump sum? Lump sum is 500 and got mine last week

if you mean the 750 for 2024 you more than likely haven’t paid enough tax yet for the credit to be applied
