Yes, a dual plug CCS with space (and marked bay) for another unit beside it. It's at the garage and burger king that is in the Tesco complex. I'm a blow in from meath so I'm not sure of the exact place name!

Even 50-100kW is better than my leaf which averages 22kW in a 30 minute session as the speed throttles over 50% SOC. My first leaf could be in single digits above 70-75% so it's not just this one either.

The majority of EVs on the road are either MEB VWs or Tesla LFP, both of which would average well over 3X that 22kW speed in a 30 minute session. It's a difference of multiples/exponents rather than a few kW/kWh here or there.

These are ABB Terra 184 chargers that give 180 kW on 1xCSS or 2x90 kW on 2xCCS.

Terra 94/124/184 UL Data Sheet (abb.com)

Not the top of the ABB range such as Terra 360 which gives load balanced 2xCSS with total output 360 kW.

Back to the bad old days on the M1, the single charger at Lusk South is broken

And the Ecars unit is gone

Get a fecking move on with the second unit Applegreen

    Applegreen, single point of f**k-ups

I have to hyphenate it to make the acronym work 😂

To be fair, I imagine they'll be quicker to get the second charger in than Ecars.

I don't buy the excuse that Ecars were blocked from installing it, I'd say they asked once, got told no and didn't ask again. If they'd really wanted the second unit in they could have been pushing a lot harder

Hopefully Ionity opens up the new chargers up the road soon

Just got an email from Applegreen

    "Good afternoon,

We hope this message finds you well. We are excited to share an important update regarding our electric vehicle charging services.

Starting today, November 23rd, we are thrilled to announce a special offer exclusively for users of the Applegreen Electric mobile app in Ireland. When you download, sign up and initiate charges through our app, you will benefit from a reduced price of 68 cents per kWh. If you are already an app user, there is no need to do anything further, you will automatically avail of the reduced rate.

We would also like to remind you that there's no pre-authorisation fee for our app users. We understand the significance of hassle-free charging, and this is our commitment to providing you with the best service possible."

They are counting on quite a bit of Stockholm Syndrome, it seems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,784 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

It’s only €0.07/kWh cheaper… but it’s better than a kick in the ar$e… so I’ll gladly take it, as even though I’m an infrequent user, I still went down the app route as didn’t fancy a €30 hold on my card anytime I did use them…

I think this is a good move and perhaps the sign of some ‘price wars’…? Circle K don’t have any way to count loyalty with an app/card so they can’t do the same other than just cut their rates to match…

Apparently, Applegreen have reduced their "hold" to €1 so that it just validates the card.

    App showing 68c fee now.

Does anyone know if Paulstowns 2nd unit with CCS & CHAdeMO has been reinstated as it’s showing up on the app!!

It was originally there alongside the dual CCS charger, but was removed earlier this year!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 296 ✭✭tlaavtech

Applegreen guy told me a few months ago that it was due to go back in at some stage. Apparently a very popular location in Dublin had a failure so the Paulstown one was moved to cover it as they could not get stock of new units. I could have checked yesterday if I had known!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,784 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

    No worries,

Ill be passing on Sunday so will see what’s up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,884 ✭✭✭✭mfceiling

99% sure there is 2 units there. Passed it 2 weeks ago and from memory there was a Skoda on one charger and an ID3 on the other.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,198 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

I was only able to pull 30kw from 2 separate applegreen chargers today. Was travelling from Belfast to Kilkenny return so needed charging

Castlebellingham at about 30% soc and a warm battery, brought it up to 50% but didn't fancy hanging around, I got to the one at rathcoole with 11% and same speeds. Got bored again so went a small bit down the road to ionity kill south and was pulling 80 to 90 kw all the way up to 90% battery

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,784 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

Yeah that backs up what I see in the Applegreen app… 2 units onsite again…

1st time I used this site there was the 2 units which was awesome, but the last time it was down to 1 unit (though the story above about the CCS/CHAdeMO unit being pulled to backfill a broken & busier unit in Dublin probably makes sense..).

it’s just handy knowing there are 3 CCS plugs there rather than 2 so chances of queuing are reduced…

the last photo in PlugShare is actually mine with the unit removed… so I’ll be passing on Sunday and will drop in for a charge and see what’s happening, and maybe grab a pic…

There's three units at Circle K at Tinryland now. Not sure if they are all working yet though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,784 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

Yeah, that’s my alternate site on the M9 now (Will hopefully never stop in Kilcilullen again for the rest of my life), but I haven’t been there yet… Paulstown suits as it’s that bit closer to Waterford, so it’s an ideal spot for a splash and dash on the way down, and then heading back up the M9 towards Dublin.

What a difference a year makes as previously all we had was Kilcullen (a sh1tshow and just slightly too far from Waterford for me), and then maybe Knocktopher, though I never used it..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,493 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

Depending where you're going in Waterford there's also the eCars units at the Amber petrol station off the Waterford bypass heading back towards New Rose.

Yeah, Inverue or something? It’s there in the back of the mind if I’m ever stuck down there, though it’d be a bit of a detour as I cross the river and head down towards Passage East…

  • Registered Users Posts: 897 ✭✭✭NyOmnishambles

The second unit was back in Paulstown at the end of November but it wasn't active

Actually the day I was there there was only one plug functioning one the other unit so hopefully that is working now too

  • Registered Users Posts: 296 ✭✭tlaavtech

The three units in Carlow are working and have been for a few months. Perfect for me in a 94Ah i3 coming From Tramore. Car says I can get to Ionity Naas road with 9km range left but that's a little tight for my liking. Spent too long waiting in Kilcullen in the last 18 months...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,784 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

The 2nd unit is indeed back in Paulstown

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,419 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

That one doesnt work for leafs on the chademo btw

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,109 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

It was working back in August, any idea why it's not now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,419 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

Bjorn had a video on it. Some of the newest HPC chademo (I think it's a specific unit type) dont work very well or at all with the earliest leafs. The older the leaf the more likely it doesnt work. Mine is a 2011 and I tried all four chademo plugs at that inver station but it doesnt work. It starts charging, then times out with internal error after 15-30 seconds. The exact same error is in a bjorn video on youtube. I think its his frankenstein geilo test video.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,109 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Ok I can confirm it was a 182 refresh model that worked in August so maybe it's to do with the age of the car

The CPO software vendors need to up their game when it comes to software updates (which I assume this is). In place / zero downtime upgrades are not a novelty anymore and the service the CPOs are providing is too important to justify an hour long outage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,168 ✭✭✭✭listermint

Depends on the type of deployment though. I'm sure they don't enjoy being out for an hour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,371 ✭✭✭markpb

I’m not blaming AppleGreen (or eCars) for this, it’s clearly a deficiency in the back-office software.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,168 ✭✭✭✭listermint

Back office software? You have chargers in the field which require both FW updates,Modem FW and then OS updates for application operation. All reliant on hardware.

As an example most phones take 15 to 20 minutes over 4G to download a large update then further 10 minutes for processing and the application updates.

With these things you probably have to bake in test time prior and after. An hour is reasonable. You aren't switching staging to production environments here you are doing wide OTA updates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,371 ✭✭✭markpb

I work in a company with more remote devices than eCars and AppleGreen put together. They all have firmware and configuration that updates OTA, they all connect to software in the back-office that needs updating and servers that need patching. We’ve never taken an hour of an outage or anything close to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,168 ✭✭✭✭listermint

    As do I.

What I don't do is present my companies capabilities on to a charging station network with unknown hardware and a hosted site that may be cloud or on premise.

1 hour seems legit based on a high level view of the architectural physical dependencies. It's not long.

This type of scenario should be outside normal business trend hours. But i wouldn't be stressing about an hour tbh. And 1 hour is probably advisory btw it's probably 30 minutes total till its up .

It's called a buffer any production sw company gives buffer.

As I said HW isn't switching dev environments that takes minutes worth of redirection.

Applegreen in Galway seem to have dropped prices - it's now €0.68/kWh via the app. I think it was €0.73/kWh the last time I used them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 373 ✭✭vinniem

Yeah all AG units dropped to €0.68 on app a few weeks ago, Ecars have dropped also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,784 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

The AG price drop was if you are signed up with them and using their app.

I think the contactless rate is still €0.73

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,276 ✭✭✭Ubbquittious

Saucy out. You'd want to be badly stuck to use one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭denismc

I noticed the new AG chargers near Portlaoise seem to be pretty quiet this weekend while there are queues at ESB Portlaoise and J14.

A lot of people obviously not aware of there existence.

    Quick question folks

Recently purchase a PHEV. Was in the Applegreen on the M1 at Castlebellingham last night and I just went to look at the charging stations. Loads of Tesla ones and one other one. The other one seems to have CCS and CHAdeMO connections, no type 1 or type 2.

Would this be standard? Naively I just assumed that it would have all chargers, what with it being on the M1.

I dont need to use it, was just lookin at it to be nosey

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,792 ✭✭✭10-10-20

PHEV's are typically for home and destination charging and only have the capacity to take on small amounts of power at much lower charge speeds than EV's, hence their use of low-speed AC type-2 connectors. So for that reason only high speed DC connectors are typically available (except with very few eCars sites) at motorway stops. That's all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,419 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

phevs dont use DC fast charging (with a couple of small exceptions like the new landrover)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,784 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

or people not willing to pay the extra few cent per kWh for the Applegreen chargers!! Which is fair enough if you are using them every day, but anyone doing trips away, it's madness queuing to save a few euro...

Ever since that site went live in Paulstown on the M9, my trips to Waterford have become completely stress free as I'm no longer needing to rely on eCars in Kilcullen or in Waterford city anymore... (I know theres a new eCars site open at Slieverue, but thats slightly out of the way, and I just don't need it as a little stop in Paulstown going either direction is fine...)

I've yet to use the CircleK in Carlow, as Paulstown suits better being closer to Waterford, and I swear I will never stop in Kilcullen again for as long as I live... Still has an utterly sh1t layout.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,094 ✭✭✭✭event

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,419 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

Utterly sh1t layout as well as a poor track record of reliability, and a very dirty service station in general.

I like the j5 m9 stop, it's perfectly placed for me to extend range on my L24 if needed. Too close to the house to be worth using in our other EVs usually but I'm in there quite a bit with the leaf.

  • Registered Users Posts: 117 ✭✭dsandson

The M1 sites have separate 22kW Type 2-only chargers located near the fuel forecourt. 1 at each site. as they're so slow for most cars versus the time people spend there its unlikely they'll install many more.

  • Registered Users Posts: 992 ✭✭✭crl84

ESB 50KW CCS units usually have a Type 2 connection as well I think. I don't think any of the major companies have Type 2 on their higher speed CCS units though.

There used to be ESB ecars there at the M1 site with chargers that had both CCS and Type 2 connections, but they were removed last summer (presume contract ran out and Applegreen wanted to put their own in).

That site is a bit bizarre as despite being an online services and prime for Dublin-Belfast charging, there's only one non-Tesla charger there. There's space marked out for a second, but they haven't put the charger in (same as lots of other Applegreen sites). As a result, lots of people (me included) would rather not take the chance as it's a single point of failure, and charge at the 6 Ionity chargers at Circle K further south, or the Circle K just off the M1 on the way into Dundalk, which has a 150KW dual CCS charger, and a separate 50KW CCS charger (which has a Type 2 connection too). There's also an Applegreen a few minutes away from that with the same single 150KW charger setup as Castlebellingham.

Also strange that Tesla haven't opened up that site for non-Tesla vehicles, as it seems fairly empty every time I've gone in there, never seen more than two Teslas charging, and far more likely for there to be cars waiting to use the 2-bay single Applegreen charger.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,094 ✭✭✭✭event

I have never seen a single car in the Tesla chargers, agreed its a bit strange

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,884 ✭✭✭✭mfceiling

I've charged there where there's been 5 other cars charging. It can be busy at times.
