    but legally how exactly

    It's the weather

It's like the point about being made come into work

Still haven't had orange warranted wind gusts (110 km/h+) here in north Dublin (based on Dublin Airport data) since Storm Doris in February 2017. Ophelia felt windier in my locality than Debi and even that wasn't that too different to a standard stormy day. Only referring to my local area of Dublin 13 though, appreciate the differences elsewhere. No trees fortunately down here.

A non event up here in Donegal.

Was it generally not as bad as the media were telling us it was going to be around the rest of the country?

Just drove from Monasterevin to Ringsend, a bit of surface water on the N7 but nowt else to note.

    Very light traffic.

I've got bad news for you - prepare now for your crèche not opening at all today.

I'm in Meath also and have just got messages that neither my kids secondary or primary schools are opening at all today. Justified in my opinion as trees down, no esb etc. there is a high possibility your crèche won't have enough staff today due to their own childcare issues. There is also the possibility that they will not have electricity.

As expected, they both flooded. Timing is everything.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Don't become a school principal, creche owner or lawyer if you think you can legally get away with "It's the weather"

Not so bad here in Kerry, well in my patch anyway, bit of wind/rain overnight, calm enough now and even some sunshine but family in East Galway had it a lot worse, no power since middle of night, schools/creche now closed for full day, lots of trees down locally so vast difference even within red areas.

The UKMO modelling for this was OTT for the Midlands at least. This has been nowhere near as bad as the Christmas storms of 1997 and 1998. From a quick look at the ME observations, only two stations (Knock and Athenry) have had Orange level gusts and low orange ones at that. Mount Dillion had high Yellow.

It was a yellow level event for several counties that got a red warning. Actual yellow level gusts are still quite impactful and will blow down trees and cause power outages.

Just drove to work shocked by the amount of people at bus stops…. How have people missed that one?

Go on educate me on the legalities

The red weather warnings are just advisories

I'm all for them, but that's all they are

If yellow level events still knock down trees then doesnt that suggest the yellow event is too broad a category?

Trees being knocked by wind can pose a threat to life - that kind of weather system at rush hour would be chaos.

There's the added issue of the high centre of gravity of double decker buses. I remember being on a Dublin bus during a storm, and the bus was rocking from side to side from the wind when on d'Olier street, which is a terrible wind trap. I imagine on motorways or exposed areas sudden gusts could be very dangerous if it caught a bus.

Not everyone listens to the radio/ watches TV or is online at all times. Can easily happen.

If something hits a car or a person at a school it is the schools fault legally whether there is a red warning or no warning.

Schools have to therefore exercise caution these days.

Because a huge portion of the population don’t listen or watch the main stream media.

Plus you'd have to wonder, will the social media algorithms show someone who predominantly interacts with viral overseas content, the local Facebook groups weather warnings or transport updates.

Plus the TFI app is showing Dublin Bus services as operating because they once again failed to officially list their services as cancelled. For some that will be enough to mislead.

Ringsend, Dublin - Which was thankfully under a red warning when this happened… otherwise someone could have been walking or cycling past this bench… or even sitting on it.

    Red Warning = Fully Justified.

yes for 99% of people they’d be fine and they are all hardy as fcuk and it’s just a strong breeze etc…. But for the other 1%, they need to be told.

I mean I'm all for safety

But there's no legal framework around these warnings

Initially with storm Ophelia the whole country shut down, now only the schools

Proper wind here in Leopardstown. I’m in a new estate with barely any trees so it’s hard to gauge, but the noise outside the window is much louder than a bit of bad weather. I definitely wouldn’t want to be on a luas in this.

It’s windier now in South Dublin than it was when we were under a red warning

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,755 ✭✭✭✭sryanbruen

We've become too used to the idea that yellow, which used to mean "be aware" before they altered the system somewhat, means ah sure it'll be grand. It's just a yellow. We get those all the time and it'll be a standard rainy windy day.

The Met have since moved to a hybrid impact/criteria based system which is like a middle ground between our old 100% criteria based system and the UK Met's impact/confidence matrix system. A yellow now is more impactful than it was previously as it entails the possibility of severe impacts based on the time of day, time of year etc. How would we change the average Joe's perception of what a yellow warning means when they've been so accustomed to the old system.

Anyway let's not spam this thread with warning system talk.

Oddly I just saw a luas pass the end of my road. Probably headed for the terminus. That’ll be a bit hairy heading over the M50 bridge.
