No idea, tbh. It's shocking to me that there's been little or no improvements for Larmour.

Is it poor coaching or wanting different attributes in a player to match the coach’s game plan?

Larmour is quite a bit smaller than the Irish back 3, and to my knowledge has never exhibited a side of him where he can come off his wing and get creative with kicks or carries, maybe Leinster supporters could speak more to that?

Forde and Osborne are both left footers, so you wouldn’t necessarily need a left footed winger

42.ie reporting plans for Emerging Ireland/Ireland A vs Portugal in March.

Good to see they're continuing with this approach to looking at up and coming talent.

    along with skill and brains

Larmour has plenty of skill but I think it's the brains department where his biggest weakness lies.

It's behind a paywall so I can't read the article, I think in principle it's a great idea to have "A" games again. However, I think they need to run in parallel with the International window rather than cut into window of club competitions so I prefer to see this game being around the 6Ns rather than later in March.

I was going to add to the post if it would be worthwhile repurposing Osborne back into a winger!

He has the passing and kicking skills with size to make an excellent 12 with ball in hand. Still not sure about his defense. He has loads of time but I just don't know if its in him to be an excellent defender.

Ringrose has the 13 spot locked down.

Don't know enough about Forde other than he plays 12 (bit of 10) and looks good with ball in hand.

Doris one of the most overhyped players in the World. He was utterly anonymous in the World Cup and anonymous in both European Cup finals he's played in. His handling is still sub par. Certainly not in the top 3 no.8s in the World. He's on borrowed time with Gleeson and Culhane coming through.

Andrew Conway retiring from rugby. Big shame

Pity for him. He never lived up to his initial hype but had a very good career and seems very content with it

Even if Gleeson got 8, Doris would be an excellent 7.

What do we think of Jager coming to Ireland? I honestly don’t think he’s that good. If Salanoa can stay fit he’s a better player as well.

"Never lived up to his hype" - shut up you dick

It would probably suit him better. He could focus more on the breakdown where he is reasonably good, and less on handling and carrying, neither of which areas he's strong in.

But I think Quinn will have the 7 shirt soon enough.

He lived up to the hype, it just probably took a bit longer to do it. He debuted at 25 and didn't break into the starting XV until the 2020 6N when he was 28 (although he should have been starting at the 2019 RWC). But 15 tries in 30 caps is a very respectable strike rate and better than most Irish wingers.

If you watched back the 2022 European cup final, Doris was our best player, he consistently made tackles on La Rochelles big carriers behind the gainline. Him and James Ryan are probably Leinster's best two players at clearing the ruck and he is a very good playmaker from 8. Was also probably Ireland's best player in the 6 nations. Also think Doris had the most turnovers for us in the New Zealand game IIRC. The "Borrowed time" Isn't true considering hes the most versatile backrow we have. Farrell absolutely flogged him playing him in meaningless games before the tournament and our entire backrow looked absolutely exhausted in the New Zealand game.

If any of Leinsters and Irelands Backrow need slagging off for not turning up it's Van Der Flier. He hasn't turned up for a big game in a long time. I'll always be critical of players that are "workhorses" who make 25 tackles in a game, from my experience those players almost always win tackles through disregarding the defensive system and simplifying the game. It doesn't work as well at higher level's IMO.

That said Long term I think one of him or Culhane will move to 7, I think the 7 position is changing to accommodate larger players playing there and 6 has really moved on to needing the body of a second row to play the positon I.E Lawes, Frizell, PSDT. The 7 should probably evolve into a 6.5 where you've got almost a combo of a traditional flanker.

TRC has a pathological hatred of Caelan Doris.

He'll never consider him as one of the best in the world despite all the evidence available.

    Don't worry about it.

Doris is a phenomenal player. One of our best forwards. He's our best 8 by an absolute mile.

Which is exactly why Ireland playing him anywhere other than 8 to accommodate lesser players, which we've done on a number of occasions, is stupid.

It's catching the ball that seems to be his problem. It's weird, he just seems to have spells where he drops too many.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,460 ✭✭✭ersatz

Something is going wrong when he drops a simple ball in the most important game of his career.

I think Doris is a victim of the idea of best 8 means best 8 in every situatuon.

Ireland got dragged into going phase after phase over longer periods of possession than is typical. Doris isn’t made for that game as an 8. Being really good at rugby does not mean that every game plan will suit your game.

I really like Ruadhan Quinn but he's still only a development player. John Hodnett was superb in the closing stages of last season and injury permitting, hell play all of the important games at 7 for Munster this season and he definitely deserves a look in the Irish set up

Nobody's mentioned Antoine Frisch at centre. We'll see great things from him this season he should be brought into the Setup and given a shot for Ireland.

He's not a 'young' player but he is new to the Irish scene in the same way Hansen was a few years ago

I think Murray at Connacht really deserves a chance too. Hendersn's done, Beirne is getting older, the Irish team need a panel of at least 6 locks in 'the system' to cover injuries, tours and the RWC in 4 years
