What's all this talk of countries running down their own systems and a fear of such for their own protection?

    Protection from who?

The enemy is already in Ukraine and the Ukrainians are killing them.

This is the point of weapons isn't it to kill the enemy?

You can bet the donor countries see it this way too. Drip feeding in keeps Russia from destroying stockpiles in Ukraine.

The sooner Russia realise they've been taken for maximum damage and go home the better for themselves.

If we allow countries to invade neighbouring countries and hold onto territory they will not stop there .

I thought we all knew that.

Have you references for donor counties' arms being depleted so that they can no longer defend themselves?

is there no arms industry to produce the arms that are needed? Is there no money to pay for it?

Are we too poor and lacking in armament to provide Ukraine with the means to defend itself ?

    Zelensky has meeting in Shannon...

with Sudanese army general Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. The pair discussed security challenges posed by Russia’s invasion, with Zelensky saying they aim to ‘intensify’ cooperation between Ukraine and African countries.

NATO countries have been modernising their stockpiles for a long time and this has expedited it. The majority of equipment sent was older, often soviet era gear that the Ukrainians were familiar with.

Some modern stuff is being sent and this is largely a proving ground for NATO investment in this tech, so again no losses there.

There's absolutely no evidence to suggest that there's any shortage of materials in NATO.

@amandstu If we allow countries to invade neighbouring countries and hold onto territory they will not stop there .

But nobody actually stopped them ,this is the crux of the problem which led to this latest invasion, Ive been on numerous threads discussing the invasion that was coming since 2014 ,your a Russophobe, you hate this and your just saying this to make them look bad , Fast forward 550+ days post invasion 2.0 and guess what were still having the same discussion,

The EU and NATO didn't do enough and aren't doing enough, but now they are sitting there going Ukraine aren't doing enough and the big counter has achieved very little strategically and winter is rapidly approaching which will pause the counter offensive .

"Have you references for donor counties' arms being depleted so that they can no longer defend themselves'

So NATO countries have an infinite supply of weapons, tanks and other vehicles to Ukraine.

No ,no they do not, have countries given a very large supply of equipment and munitions to Ukraine yes ,has that equipment and munitions and vehicles been replenished no they have not have their stores replenished, does that leave countries weakened defence wise yes .

    @circadian

There's absolutely no evidence to suggest that there's any shortage of materials in NATO.

It's well documented that there is shortages of artillery and other munitions, they are struggling to find the 1 million rounds promised to Ukraine

, is there a large number of tanks, IFVs and other armour in NATO to give to Ukraine no

    That's shortages.

Yes NATO are modernising not a rapid scale by any stretch

Leaving aside ammunition (afaiwa) the US unlike Europe, has no shortages of most of the weapons platforms they might want to supply Ukraine. For example, I think they could repeatedly feed kinds of numbers of IFVs/artillery systems/tanks etc. they have given or promised to Ukraine so far from stocks over several years of the war before making a large dent, and could do the same with aircraft if they decided to supply these in future. Without the US we (in Europe) would be in trouble.

At the moment IMO the US is calibrating and limiting support for domestic political reasons (the division + general lack of belief in supporting Ukraine on conservative/isolationist right) and also as a strategic calculation (worries about "WW3", Putin going on a mad one + cracking under the pressure and using nukes, and/or Russia exploding in chaos). It is not because they are caught short of stuff to supply Ukraine with and struggling.

An advertisement for the Russian armed forces. The sign says 'Meat Farm'

It's not an advertisement for the Russian military more a poorly executed memorial mural with the sign above translating to meat yard rather than meat farm

Trump is a lame duck. He well lost to Biden already and he probably lost even more support from Republican voters due to his January 6th stunt.

And still more claims are coming out against him and classified documents,if he gets re-elected America will be a lost cause

Not just the United States. He will sell out Ukraine to the Russians on day one.

America is in a sad state of affairs. The choices for president are comical.

Amnesty International’s new investigation shows that Israel imposes a system of oppression and domination against Palestinians across all areas under its control: in Israel and the OPT, and against Palestinian refugees, in order to benefit Jewish Israelis. This amounts to apartheid as prohibited in international law.

No I think he will do what he done to the Taliban, have a MOAB loaded on to a C130 to drop on a cave,in this case he'll drop it on Kiev aiming for zelensky

Theres 3 1/2 years between them so they certainly are both geriatric! I really can't see Trump getting the Republican party nomination with all those criminal charges over his head. He might well still stand as an independent candidate, if there's no legal obstacles against him?

I'm not sure that either of the USA parties are prepared to back other more suitable candidates for the next presidential election. Betting odds have the two auld 'uns way out in front as favourites. WTF?

A very sad state of affairs in this time of world crisis.

I guess the fact they can choose and freely vote for what ever candidate they choose to is what makes it a democracy.

It's strange that someone convicted of a felony cannot vote, but can be on the ballot and be elected.

T'is messed up, but that Merica for ya!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,170 ✭✭✭deadduck

“He might well still stand as an independent candidate”

that’s exactly why he will get it, and why he got it first time round too. If he runs as an independent, the GOP lose a large percentage of their vote to him, effectively handing the election to the democrats

as long as there’s no legal barrier to him running, I think 100% he’ll get the nomination, he’s just too ‘popular’ with enough of the republicans voter base

Zelensky would not be human if he wasn't showing the accumulated effects of 18 mths of the war, and that's for sure !!! He's one remarkable man. I think that its well understood the position that Ukraine is in now vis-a-vis continued funding V "progress" . None the less, I also think that there's a core of supporters in western Country's, US etc. who see the bigger picture and realize that Putin has to be stopped, and that's the bottom line. And if not now, then at some future date and that's the reality of Putin's war. But neither is it all doom and gloom. On the Russian side, all the evidence is that Putin is grasping at straws, and time is not his friend either. And you can be sure that he's feeling a damn sight worse than Zelensky despite all the comforting noises he hears from his sycophants'. Despite his best efforts, like the cracks that appear in the Moskva river that flows through Moscow as it starts to thaw.

It is certainly possible but I would also think that Germany's main concern was energy supply for German industry not be interrupted by the Ukraine cutting off supply through their country.

Germany have had a fairly detached view of the more recent full scale invasion of Ukraine. It was really only when the pipeline was blown up that proper support for Ukraine against Russia materialized.

I'm surprised kamela Harris seems to have been completely overlooked over the last 18 months ,

For a country it's size and the numbers involved in political activism from a young age , the current only two choices are terrible,

I was saying on another thread about the rise and number of pro 2A youtubers looking like getting the nod to run in Republicans states elections in the next while isn't great all anti woke, pro god and conservatives , all with followers in the millions who tend to be more towards the extreme end of the spectrum,

Rather than saying we need to fix America, they want to bring god and traditional family values , church on Sundays and anti LGBT rights.

I don't see American politics settling down any time soon

No doubt, and if the West, NATO etc knew 2 years ago what they know now, they would have done something. But the general consensus at that time was Ukraine didn't have chance of a snowball in hell of withstanding an invasion by the 2nd most powerful military in the world, and a nuclear superpower to boot. Remember all the military "experts"? 2 week's maybe, but 3 weeks max, no longer. Basically it would be a re-run of Crimea. But Ukraine turned that plan on its head, as we have seen. So it was only after Ukraine proved to the world that they were not prepared to fold in the face of Putin's aggression that the military and other help started to flow. Had Ukraine the gear back then that they have now, Putin's invasion would have been stopped dead in it's track's. Unfortunately that did not happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,209 ✭✭✭jmreire

Yes, there's always that of course, but assuming in the worst case scenario that he does get re-elected., what then? The US Election will be held in NOV 2024, so minimum 14 mths away, then add in another 2 or possibly 3 mths best case scenario, so 17 mths away. But as I under stand it ( and that's no guarantee that I have it right) but what the present US Government decides, holds? I'm thinking about Trump organizing the pull out of US Troops from Afghanistan, 2 years before it actually happened, and with Trump no longer in power. So, could Biden have changed the plan laid down by Trump?

Biden could only do so much to keep things locked in, Obama did the same, Trump did the same with the pull out yeah and the US Taliban Treaty, Obama/Congress did it with Russian sanctions, it completely neutered his naked effort to appoint Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson to Secretary of State to grease the wheels of a Russia-Exxon deal worth at least $500 Bn. It won't stop Trump from calling Russia and giving away intel though, or taking executive actions to stand down any movement of materiel.
