Large explosion rocked Kazan tonight apparently. Russian officials are saying a car exhaust was blocked.

Over 1,000km from the Ukraine but this would be on the wishlist.

    Edit: Video of the explosion

There’s aid, and there’s immediately practical aid.

The Russians cannot be stopped or driven out by flinging 20Euro bills at them. Without downplaying the effect of various non-kinetic aids to Ukraine as a country and its citizens, the ability to rehouse people or rebuild towns is a “nice to have” compared to the immediate requirement for things which can disrupt or kill the enemy. Or things which directly support that, such as the US’s unequalled ISR and Intel capabilities.

In other words, there are probably better charts than that to make the point,

No, they were supporting the Free Syrian Army, but both ISIS and Al-Queda were also fighting Assad at the same time, and sometimes the lines got blurred as in " My enemies enemies are my friends". Which accounted for US supplied weapons and equipment sometimes falling into ISIS /Al-Quaeda hands.

Car exhaust, jesus they are struggling coming up with the excuses now.

hard to believe all the hysteria about the risk of escalation if Ukraine attacked targets within Russia.

Ukraine seem to be doing it with frequency now.

The soft announcement of ATACMS is great to hear. It will be another off the bucket list.

Even if they get a small but steady supply of ATACMS when you combine it with a small supply of Storm Shadow and Scalp it becomes a decent supply. Taurus would be the icing on the cake.

How soon will the atacms be delivered or can we presume there may be some already on route and ready for use.

A bit more on this from the Guardian this morning based on a interview from Budanov. Looks like they managed to at least injure some senior generals yesterday.

Generals injured in strike on Russian navy's Black Sea HQ

Nine people were killed and 16 injured, among them two generals, in a Ukrainian airstrike on Russia’s Black Sea naval headquarters in Crimea, according to the head of Ukrainian military intelligence.

Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine, told the Voice of America that “among the wounded is the commander of the group, Col Gen [Alexander] Romanchuk, in a very serious condition. The chief of staff, Lt Gen [Oleg] Tsekov, is unconscious.”

A Ukrainian missile strike hit the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea fleet in Sevastopol on Friday. Footage posted on social media showed clouds of white smoke billowing from the rooftop of the building.

Soon after the strike Russia’s defence ministry said that one military serviceman was missing as a result of the assault.

Budanov did not confirm reports about the alleged death of the commander of Russia’s Black Sea fleet, Adm Viktor Sokolov.

“The number of casual military servicemen who are not employees of the headquarters is still being determined. These are military personnel who are on duty, security, and so on — they are not included in the list that I announced to you,” Budanov was quoted as saying by Voice of America.

Probably next month. Might have some ready to go in Poland, in which case possibly next week.

    It's what grass craves.

What I read is that they get the shorter range version with cluster munition (150km) or m39 variant

It will be interesting too see the claim attached to the nbc article seem to suggest that it's not official but if it happens it's only going to be a small supply, hopefully it's a steady supply but time will tell,

Not sure where the claims of cluster munitions are the ones being sent unless you look at Wikipedia they are top of the page ,

I don't think they are sending one of their best weapons to bomb a few trenches

The drip drip drip of weaponry continues.

Just give it to them, it's not like the money is actually leaving America.

They don't want to defeat, they just want to reduce the threat of Russia down to negligible, I still think the bigger picture is looking at China and removing their biggest Allie from the chess board

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,337 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

A weaker Russia makes China stronger.

Regime change is evitable in Russia, the successors will look East not West.

Whenever Putin reign ends , Russia will burn in chaos,we will likely see a kick off in Chechnya, and elsewhere a weakened and demoralised military is going to make it easier for internal conflict to break out too , China will then rape the country for every natural it has to offer ,

Russia is fauqed thanks to Putins 3 day adventure to Ukraine

Unless there is a Hitler style ending to the Putin regime and full occupation of Russia by western forces it’s hard to see an end to this. The current war may stop or freeze like Korea but Russia will use that time to re-arm and ramp up their interference in democratic countries. Any non fighting period will be used by Russia for these purposes. It is an absolute dictatorship in all but name so they can do whatever they like and behave whatever way they like. There should be western military intervention to drive the Russians out of Syria and North Africa to stem the flow of migrants and reduce the turmoil that causes on the home front. But the chances of getting the necessary political will to do that are less than zero and the howls of derision and condemnation from the likes of the UN/China/ BRICS etc would be deafening.

The current western objectives appear to be to squeeze Russia in the hope of precipitating a popular uprising or inner circle move against Putin neither of which seems likely in the short term. A quick end to the war is not on the table.

The problem with chaotic fires is they likely burn down the neighbour's houses; I think there's as good a chance Putin's folly emboldens a resurgent nationalist, military dominant Russia keen to restore pride and empire after the Ukrainian humiliation. WW1 Germany was demoralised, stripped to the core. Look what happened there.

Russian imperialistic, collectivist and supremacist mindset, coupled with a big dollop of irrationality at the core of their mentality, is so deeply embedded in this nation, that I don’t think it can be compared to any other nation after any other European conflict in history. What I mean to say is that I think Russia will remain a political liability on the edge of Europe, and a horrible model of autocracy, for a good while to come, certainly in all our lifetimes, and that is completely irrespective of the outcome of this war or its consequences. The mentality is simply not ready for democracy or rule of law. They can put on a veneer of it alright, but the majority have no true understanding or appreciation of it. Much like the proponents of any aggressive, supremacist ideology (another certain one comes immediately to mind), the “Russia is great” people (which has to be most Russians, really) see democracy and peaceful co-operation, if they give them any thought in the first place, as others’ weaknesses to be exploited and abused, nothing more.

I myself am from EE so I will admit I can fall prey to the “strongman syndrome” at some points in life. But, perhaps as one of the consequences of their complete and continuous brutalisation of other peoples, as well as self-brutalisation, if you will, throughout history, Russians are on a whole different planet from any other EE states regarding the distorted irrationality of their mindset.

I would think that what we have seen and heard of their military, propagandistic, media and other announcements and pronouncements during this war so far (including Vox-pop here) illustrates the above quite nicely.

If you cast your memory back to the announcement of Storm Shadows. They were already in Ukraine before the announcement and were used (if I'm remembering right) within a couple of days of the official announcement.

I'd say they could be seen sooner than some might expect. Not going to guess though.

Which makes the lack of backbone from the west to actually back Ukraine all the more pathetic.

Amnesty International’s new investigation shows that Israel imposes a system of oppression and domination against Palestinians across all areas under its control: in Israel and the OPT, and against Palestinian refugees, in order to benefit Jewish Israelis. This amounts to apartheid as prohibited in international law.

Unfortunately Ukraine is being used as the proxy to achieve this aim. The suffering is horrific.
