I still laugh at myself going out after the postman was gone and wiping down the letter box and doorbell !!! It was a futile excercise as no one was actually going to use the letter box !!

An anti vaxer collegue came out with this klinker one day - "Do you know that every single rat they tested the vaccine on died!"

Otherwise a nice lady but I switched off when she started talking about covid and vaccines.

It is absolute bollocks.

The rat studies showed nothing of any concern, but they all get killed at the end of the study to examine their innards and because they can't be used for any other studies. So maybe that got twisted by the usual anti vax cnuts.

I love facts and dislike malicious misinformation.

Telling a child to put their hand over their mouth on a beach is neurosis plain and simple, if the parent is that concerned about a bit of coughing the child should be kept at home on not on the beach! You just don’t get it.

Maybe my parents were posh or something (no, they weren't) but when I grew up sneezing coughing yawning was to be covered and not doing it was considered to be bad manners. Not necessarily for health hygiene reasons alone but also 'because'. Regardless where it was beach, at home or restaurant didnt matter.

I think your neurosis detector went into overdrive there. It could simply be the above. At least from my POV its not unheard of.

I was skeptical that a new technology could produce vaccines that were safe enough, effective enough, and could be produced in such vast quantities in such a short space of time to make a massive change to the course of the pandemic.

I was delighted to be proved so emphatically wrong. An absolute triumph of science and medicine.

They weren't mandatory. There were a lot of incentives to get them, it was a pandemic, also because everyone knew a core of anti-vaxxers would be against them from the start, which is precisely what happened. Later on ICU's contained a majority of unvaccinated despite them only making up a tiny part of the population. I can't imagine losing someone unnecessarily to anti-vax quackery, but sadly that's what happened in cases.

My friends, family, co-workers, every one I know absolutely sick to the teeth of the anti-maskers, anti-vaxxers and other anti-science alarmists losing their minds over some free vaccines and fantasizing that they are being oppressed by basic healthcare guidelines during a pandemic

A lot of my friends and family are angry at being coerced into receiving vaccines that at best didn't live up to what was promised, and at worse led to some pretty significant side effects for some of them. Most are saying they won't be getting any more because they don't see the point. Why take on the side effects and still end up with COVID anyway?

Locking people out of society unless they get a new, never used in humans, medical product isnt part of "basic healthcare guidelines during a pandemic" at all.

I very much doubt that.

We weren't "promised" anything either, bizarre view. Vaccines were developed by multiple companies, early trials showed good results, the virus mutated, it still performed. Got billions of safe doses out to billions of people during a pandemic.

The most comical, hysterical part are the anti-science, anti-authority types in Ireland still determined to paint themselves as victims of "oppression" over a free vaccine which saved a truckload of lives. There must be dozens of them, dozens!

Less than 5% of Irish adults chose to be unvaccinated. Yet come to a thread like this and I can already identify half of it as known Boards anti-vaxxers or vaccine contrarians. Not exactly a representative cross-section of society. But that's the nature of social media. Online, people are less likely to express neutral opinion than someone with a more extreme opinion.

Back on topic, the most hysterical people I came across during this whole pandemic were those who were against vaccines, masks, etc. Lunatic views.
