Since you were threatening to involve the police because I disagreed with you, what you choose to contest has no value to me.

So I see Graham Linehan was unable to find a venue to hold his comedy show.

Despite this I don't see Father Ted or The IT crowd being pulled from channel 4 anytime soon.

Nothing says cancelled like a column in one of the country's largest newspapers.

I think he is cancelled from his own industry of comedy writing though. No one seems to want to work with him now and he would be difficult to take a gamble on as his last popular show was from 10 years ago.

The whole "cancel culture" thing is utter nonsense. People should be free not to work with someone that vile.

That is true but cancel culture I think refers more to advertisers being targeted to not support a show or organised boycotts and protests. The church and conversative groups did it in the past and now every side tries to do it. I think people wanted to work with linehan on the father Ted musical in 2018.

Being Conservative myself this as akin to an ouroboros: different elements of the progressives in a race to silence any one who disagrees with them so as to instil a culture of self-censorship to prevent any challenges to their authority.

You think it's that organised? I doubt it.

Who are the liberals with this authority and what authority do they have?

Man on the internet says absolute facts.

Cancel him, delete his works, pretend he never existed.

The sooner people wake up to cancel culture the better. The people driving this crap are only after a medal for taking down someone famous. That's all.

Nobody's being targeted. People are allowed to voice their opinions and to vote with their wallets.

If a tv show or movie is not being made because financiers or advertisers pull their funding as a result of activism then the general publics doesnt get a say in the matter. The ticket holders for that linehan gig didn't get a chance to see the show after all. I don't think the venue should have been foreced to host Linehan but I'd say some of the ticket holders feel a bit aggrieved with the venue.

The public always have a say. They're either ok with it or they don't care. The venue wasn't forced to do anything. It's their choice who they give a platform to.

Ah, yeah but shows only get made if financiers want them. How do the public get a say in that?

If everyone thinks they'll make money, things get made. If they don't think they'll make money, they don't get made. Isn't it that simple?

This comedy show with Grahm Linehan lost money by cancelling the show, as all the tickets had already be sold. If decisions were made purely for financial reasons this show wouldn't have been cancelled.

The venue decided. The ticket holders were not polled to ask if they wanted the show cancelled when it was revealed GrahamLinehan was one of the mystery guests. The public had no say.

Venue's choice. They're pro-LGBT and once they realised what an awful person Linehan is, they cancelled the event.

Why would the public have a say on something like this?

Presumably they thought reputational risk was a long term problem. The first theatre was a pro LGBT venue, or so I hear.

In your previous post you stated the general public always has a voice and they can make their wishes known with their wallet. I was only rebutting those points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,970 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

Again I have no wishes to force the venue to host him given his views, but the idea that activism or boycotting doesn't leave to cancelling is just wrong. They literally cancelled his comedy show.

But it's also not a new thing if a comedy show in the 60s was pro lgbt it would have been cancelled at that time.

Man on internet gets obsessed with topic, harasses individuals on a frequent basis, ends up with his wife leaving him because of his behaviour. On top of that, half of his former colleagues no longer want to associate with him because he's harangued them online for not agreeing with him.

All his old comedy works continue to be aired but nobody wants to work with him in the future. That's as a result of his behaviour. On top of that, the comedy venues ran a mile when they saw his name cause of the reputation he earned.

No, I said they've a choice in general. I doubt almost 70 million people are going to sanction every booking of every venue.

No it shouldn’t stop because the show and the actors in it shouldn’t be tied into something one of the creators said years after the show ended.

Not to throw a spanner in the works, but wasn't he bang on about stuff like the Tavistock way before it was seen as an issue.

I actually don't think it can. Legislation is voted on by the Oireachthas by the politicians we elect and that's the way it should be. Referendums become issues of protest etc and the real matter gets overlooked.

Its a pity Beasty didn’t moderate Twitter and banned him for a few weeks at the very beginning of his campaign - it might have got him to come to his senses.

He’s effectively lost his family his friends and his livelihood just by simply not stepping away from his tweeting device and letting some nobody get under his skin.

Many of us here have stayed on fighting when we really should have quit but we haven’t devoted our lives to whatever stupid topic we were arguing over.

I pity his wife and family- it must have been so hard for them to see him deteriorate and get sucked into an argument that was just impossible to “win” so why even start.

I certainly don’t agree with this cancellation bollox but as others have said, the best way to address would have been through clever comedy.

I'd argue his wife leaving him reflect quite poorly on her aswell. If marriage is supposed to be a serious commitment then I don't think a couple of years of odd behavior is requisite for ending a marriage rather than trying to properly help the person who's going trough the crisis they were going through.

It is kind of ironic that Linehan made his name with a comedy show that made fun of men in dresses, and now he has permanently attracted the ire of other men in dresses.

His wife left him because of his obsessive hatred of trans people.

Oh come on- his wife and family were threatened by trolls and all because he refused to give up the bickering - you know nothing about the key reasons the relationship ended- that’s such a pompous thing to say about someone you know nothing about
