Looking at the weather radar it should have been raining in Galway for the past while not a drop what is wrong with the radar showed front going through with nothing.

    Hello weather folks

Just wondering how accurate ventusky forecasts are. Predicting nearly 40mm of rain in South Dublin from 3am to 6am. Have a sporadic leak (waiting on roofers) and thinking I might need to stay up in case the drip catching bucket gets overwhelmed.

Some guidance suggesting conditions in southeast could go from near calm around 0700h to storm force wind gusts from NNE by 0900h as low passes. Strong winds from an unusual direction could bring down a few trees in exposed locations. So in other words, readers in that region especially near east coast or downslope from mountains, be prepared for quite a sudden change in conditions around 0800h (timing could be off by an hour or so). A little further north in Dublin-Meath-Kildare there would not be such a pronounced change as the low tracks south and winds would be fairly strong all through the rainfall event, might show a slight decrease before shifting from ENE to NNE, around 0700h.

I'll be watching wind direction. Have a birch in the front that is well looked after, pretty dense leaves and branches. The willow is another matter, was too late in the year to get to it and it's got alot of beetle bore holes.

Took the trampoline net down and turned it upside down! So hopefully it'll be okay!

Same, I have 2 massive Beech trees and a chestnut that are all over 200 years old. They sit right above the public road, which is immediately south of the trees so winds from the North are definitely most risky. In the past 4 years I have had multiple arborists out to quote for trimming them and none of them will take the job because they are quite awkward to get at. Every single year I spend September to March worrying about them coming down in a storm. The only thing about northerly winds for me is that I'm sheltered from them by a hill. I only remember one northerly wind event, I think it was 2 years ago, and there was hardly a breath of wind at my house despite a wind warning in place. Hoping for the same outcome tomorrow.

Just looking at Meteologix most models have slightly downgraded the wind potential for the East (but still some looking potent). ECM & HARMONIE keeping the strongest winds offshore; AROME, GFS and surprisingly ICON that usually way overstates wind potential are downplaying things a bit, and then UKMO HD out on its own with near red-level gusts. Still a big spread in the models in terms of severity with this one.

Luckily for me I've got access to my roof via a Velux to get out on the roof and access the Zinc clad Bathroom Dormer of the attic conversion with neighbours roof valleys protecting me from falling anywhere. Feckin thing wasn't clad right by cowboys back in a major renovation in 2010. The zinc sheet overlaps weren't done right and weren't soldered either. Leaked almost straight away back then and builder 'fixed' it along with the rest of the snag list. Only when it leaked again in 2018 did I get up there and have a look myself. Turns out he just spread a bucket load of sealer along the zinc sheet overlap. Looked ugly AF but then again whos going to see it but a Garda Helicopter (or drone pilot nowadays). Did solve the leak for 8 years though I suppose. My fix with a tube of tec7 lasted 5 years from 2018 till a week or so ago.

The weekends forecast helped me break through the procrastination and indecision about what to do about it and a trip to Woodies for the materials and 90 minutes on the roof today sorted it hopefully. This time I scraped all the old shite off and applied a special roof sealant tape and then spread a load of Tec7 sealant from a tub over that. Hopefully these 2 layers of protection see me good till I can afford to get someone who specialises in zinc cladded roofs to redo the top deck of the Dorner around the skylight and solder it this time.

Some of the Hi Res models showing a lot of rain falling in a relatively short timeframe, flooding rain, especially around parts of Leinster. Dublin could get flooding, there is going to be very strong run of from the Wicklow mountains also along with other mountainous areas. High tides in Dublin in the afternoon, I wonder might this find a lot of water trying to exit the rivers although winds by then will be moving offshore.

Winds a bit less than earlier shown but still stiff in places it being summer, especially more elevated ground. Possibility of very strong winds all right along the E, SE for a short time, I think the strongest winds will stay along or offshore as gradients tighten with the Lp moving quickly away and sending the strongest winds into Devon /Cornwall, will see if any wobble in the models later.

Donegal not included in the warning but no escaping the rain. Moderate and persistent this past couple of hours.

Unfortunately the source of the leak isn't anything obvious. Roofer who installed it blames the semi-d flat roof adjoining neighbours and after 3 attempts to source the issue stopped answering calls.

Fingers crossed for yourself, hope you don't wake up to any surprises 👍️

Unusual for such a low that the areas highlighted will see some torrential rain and other areas further South little or nothing. As some have already noted the direction of the wind could be a factor regarding potential damage in the South/Southeast. A Northerly gale, albeit temporary is a disruptive event

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Overnight rain will test your repair Caibos, best of luck, hope it holds, tec7 is good stuff.

That's some serious rain falling in a short space of time into early morning by ICON 18Z, been very consistent in its projections.

GFS 18Z also showing high totals especially in the East.

Uk met office orange wind for parts of SW Britain. Gusts widely 40 to 50mph inland, possibly 60mph. 70mph possible exposed coasts and hills.

A bit stunned that a chart of any kind is showing a gust within 6kmh of a red warning criterion, a mere 5 days after the end of July. Mad.

(even though if it by some miracle verified it would be at the summit of Lugnaquilla)

Going to bed nice and calm in eagle point, I can’t imagine we will wake to the same calmness but hopefully it won’t be as bad as expected.

Have a great sleep .Got a bit windy here near the coast outside Tralee.

Blustery early tomorrow morning along Southern counties, AROME 18Z picked up the winds again a little bit from earlier runs.

It looks like we will avoid the heaviest of the rain from this.

A named storm this early August. Who would have thought it? Due to the unusually warm seas temperatures we may well get several wind storms in the next few months.

Position of Lp, heaviest of the rain overnight into tomorrow morning

Getting very windy here now in Cork. More like a night in October/November than the first week in August.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,391 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

    Rain pretty heavy now

We had one a couple of years back too if I recall, lot of branches down in Cork after that one.

rain band appears a bit further north than that ARPEGE loop at present. Some strong echoes in Donegal

Best of luck to all tonight!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,072 ✭✭✭John.Icy

The northern portion of the front looks worse IMO. I know the Dublin radar is poor enough (without Shannon backing it up) and can't portray any sort of intensity or structure to fronts a lot of the time, but I'm not seeing those huge totals in the likes of Dublin.

Below is the ICON 18z for e.g. and it looks miles off it for now, it really didn't think much would be happening up north by now. Perhaps that really heavy pulse is being hidden by Shannon repairs but I'm not sure. We shall see in the totals tomorrow.

Radar fairly useless which is a shame. Met reports from midnight show its raining heavy out west

    Belmullet 4.7mm

    Athenry 4.1mm

    Newport 4.2mm

    Knock 3.6 mm

Wind is starting to pick up here in Waterford and direction has changed to the Southerly South Easterly. Looks like it will turn to a more northerly when it picks up in the morning which is better for the trees here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,809 ✭✭✭snowgal

Heavy enough rain already near Trim, hope no one wakes up to anything bad…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,391 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

Status Yellow - Rain warning for Donegal

Limerick the only county without a warning now.

Sweet jaysus, some wind and rain in sliver strand in wicklow, mobile home is rocking but not the good type of rocking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,989 ✭✭✭spookwoman

Dead calm in Waterford city at the moment.

Radar showing signs of gusty winds and thunderstorm over southeast Wexford, possible small tornado in development? Will be off the coast by time anyone reads this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

    Sounds grim out there now

Driving rain 30mm has fallen in large parts of Dublin in last few hours

Low winding up. A rough few hours ahead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,751 ✭✭✭✭fits

I’m in Dingle. Was fairly wild and gusty for a while around 4 am. It’s windy here alright but not raining.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭Clamball

Very gusty here in Cork City now, gusts woke me up. Two flights have taken off from Cork Airport, but the summer laden trees in the back gardens are being put under pressure. I can hear some of the garden furniture moving on the patio as well.

Wind has picked up further in Greystones. 34kts gusting 42kts. Rain has eased. 25.6mm since midnight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 596 ✭✭✭aisling86

We are awake since about 5am with some strong gusts. Thankfully it’s dry. There are trees down not far from here on the cousane road.

Very quiet here in East Clare.

Ah flip, I was quietly gloating that we finally escaped something for a change.

Wettest day here since August 2nd 2014 which had 70.4mm and is the station record. Currently on 42.8mm so not going to break that. Still pretty impressive. So roughly a one in five year event.

Monsoon like conditions in Dublin...think there will be lots of flooding

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,725 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

I am a long way from Dublin of course but I visualize some of those small streams coming out of the hills overflowing in the next few hours, assuming 40-50 mm rain may have fallen by then. Low appears to be moving off Wexford coast now, this is the point where the strong N-NE winds are likely to rush into the vacuum created. Reports from Gorey to Wexford will be appreciated. Would imagine the strong northerly has just set in around Waterford too.

Wind gone from SE to E here in Greystones. 27kts gusting 38kts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,169 ✭✭✭spakman

Just back from a drop off to the airport. Horrendous driving conditions - there will definitely be flooding

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,278 ✭✭✭Sammy2012

We live just north west of Gorey and its currently very quiet.

Some very strong gusts hitting Carlow town now. I'm parked up and the car is rocking. A sign took off down the road which is what got my attention. It was fairly calm up to a few minutes ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,238 ✭✭✭pad199207

    Atrocious conditions in Kildare

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭Clamball

Still gusty but I would say gusts easing somewhat in cork city. Sun breaking through the clouds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 259 ✭✭littlema

For once we have a sunny morning with a gentle breeze since 6.30.am. The forecast on Met Éireann is optimistic for the coming hours. The garden beckons!

    South Sligo.

Lovely sunny morning on the West Coast, light Northerly breeze, we've escaped once again this year. I see almost 2 inches of rain fell in Dublin according to the met stations. The rain stopped here about 1am, didn't rain too much in the end. I also see a 98km gust at Roches Point.
