It’s a problem in all sports and not something new or cycling specific. Gambling, alcohol, tobacco previously, now petro companies and states are the biggest sponsors across the sports world.

It’s logical as they are willing to spend a lot to clean their image by association with sports and human endeavour.

Cycling bashes itself up enough without taking on too much self blame for sports washing when it’s a much wider issue.

I think Vingo will want to take today's stage and take the climbers jersey too.

F**k sake, ITV and their marathon ad breaks. Only been on 10 mins and they have 2 long ad breaks already. Why I watch almost exclusively pre recorded.

In cycling though its not just a name on the shirt / jersey. It is the team name. It is more in your face.

Go do something else for 30 minutes and then come back to ITV. Of course, you'll have to avoid the likes of this page until you catch up, but there's nothing worse than those ad breaks.

Or subscribe to GCN - it's actually great value for money.

Yeah, definitely doing GCN next year, currently I'm going over to TG4 when the ads come on, though cycling is tough to watch when you are not really understanding whats being said.

Madiot gave a very emotional interview in regard to Pinot last mountain stage. Pinot corner today should be electric.

Yeah it’s a shame cycling teams don’t have names instead of just sponsors. Like in formula 1 you have Williams, McLaren etc along with the manufacturers works teams. It would give more continuity to be a fan of say Wolfpack Quickstep or whatever, with at least part of name staying consistent.

Neither Ineos or the medical staff making any effort to check out carlos rodríguez who’s just head butted the tarmac. Not a good image.

Shocking isn’t it, the lack of concussion protocol is actually scary

Wouldn't you just love if UAE and Jumbo would just p1ss off for ONE day and let the other teams battle it out. No rest for anybody

It's really not a good tactic in the long run. They will need favours some day. Mercxx and Pantini were notoriously selfish knobs in that regard too.

Thats terribly amateur from Gaudu. He looks proper hurt.

Barguiel playing it cute and not doing any turn. I think pidcock catches pinot and barguiel robs the win from them, unless POG has the legs to save his tour and go long for a win

Crazy how Adam Yates always lets Vingegaard onto Pogacar's wheel.

    Oh fek off Pidcock

Just realising Gall is Austrian. Had assumed given his name and team that he was French.

UAE are still a poor GC team. Questionable tactics, poor road positioning like you mention. I’ve seen more than once where Pog would be the first man of his team in the peloton with his teammates all behind him. There were times in the first two weeks where they had the chance to take the pace out of the peloton and allow Pog some more recovery time. Yet, they got on the front and went foot to the floor. They were trying to out Jumbo, Jumbo and it’s a crazy tactic when you look at the respective lineups of both teams.

You do wonder about Vingegaard. Why not attack there before the top assuming he wants the stage. Absolutely nothing to lose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,130 ✭✭✭Raoul Duke

Exactly what I was thinking. How does he expect to win this stage. Zero attempt so far. Looks like a simple sprint win from Pogacar.

You can’t suck a wheel if you attack though.

Ya his tactic watching Podge is bizarre. Anyone but Vinge to win the stage I hope!

Gall and both Yates brothers have been great to watch this tour.

Good man Pog and fair play to Yates. They played that to perfection.

Looking at today and it just reinforces my opinion that Pog just emptied himself in the TT and paid a big price the following day. I’d say the TT hurt him more psychologically than physically as well. Imagine putting in a ride that good and getting blown away like that. It must be tough to get over something like that in such a short time.

I would have broken the TV if he did.

He followed Gall the whole way up so I assume it was a deal. Gall deserved those points.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 9,213 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

I'm confused. What would the deal be? Hey Gall I won't attack so you can have second in the Polkadot and I can.....stay 7 minutes ahead?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,236 ✭✭✭Mefistofelino

Not Vingo's problem if Gall was riding like a dunce. For a couple of decades now, Kelly has been telling us " In order to win, you must be prepared to lose". Gall obviously had the legs to be in with a shout. His head was somewhere else though.

Ya very true. I was thinking about historically in that situation rather than the real race situation.

I was already very much in the VdP camp vs WvA in the classics and after this Tour I'm really developing a dislike for Jumbo. Not that they do anything wrong just they seem to constantly be against anyone I like.
