Ruane has a great engine but the issues with midfield were there when he was starting. He can't seem to cleanly field a ball, which is literally the problem with everyone in that area of the team at the moment and it's a huge part of why we're losing the kickouts. We are struggling on primary possession and the breaking ball. Dublin will press like crazy the next day, so we need to have some plan.

For a lad his size, Ruane doesn't win enough high ball imo... But I can't remember the last time a game against Dublin was all about winning kickouts in midfield.

Galway are a very strong fielding side, and the wind funnel from yesterday won't be seen again this year. Plenty of things for us to be worried about but I wouldn't be getting too caught up on the kickout stats from yesterday.

Ya your probably right about Touhy and right about AOS too nowadays I suppose. I just think we need height in the middle third. We had nobody to field a hig ball yesterday and Reapes kickouts were a shambles because he had no outlet. We didn't win much breaking ball there either. Looking back it's hard figure how we did win. But ya Touhy too inexperienced and Aiden not mobile enough. The more I think on it the more I think Dublin will win pulling up.

Dublin yet to be tested against top team . Only team to remain from leinster and their round Robin group so their opposition have proved to be weak . 3 from our group still in it ,so we have plenty of competitive games behind us, which will stand to us .

Valid question/hypothesis but wouldn't think it had too much to do with it.

Conor wins the odd break in there, as does DOC/Paddy/Stephen/Jack (Coyne and Carney)/Jordan/Mattie/Fionn/Enda/Aido/the rest. Or, at least, usually they do. We were just getting well beat to them yesterday. Partly strategy (Galway frequently outnumbered us heavily at the break), partly outmuscled or outbattled (Conor might have helped on that one relative to Jason/Kevin), partly bad luck (with balls just breaking the wrong side or an inch or two out of reach) and a few times too often simply fumbled/dropped when it could/should have been a clean catch.

Easy to get caught up with the statistics and see it as a big trend that might potentially have a singular cause but it was a pattern that emerged from a few different issues/mistakes/losses repeating independently rather than that one specific thing (unless we want to say lack of individuals able to win their 1v1 matchups aerially but again, wouldn't imagine Conor alone could make much impact there).

I'd tend to give Galway full credit on this one. They worked incredibly hard to prevent the easy short ones or lads breaking at pace to space unmarked (aided by the breeze which made the accuracy on anything less than a give-me too risky to try) and then used their height and physicality around the middle to bully us. Nobody else left in the competition has that height/physicality though (they were probably the best at this last year too even without Cooke) so wouldn't be 'as' worried going into a future game of it breaking in quite the same manner, especially without the Salthill wind tunnel.

So far this Mayo squad have won a division 1 title and beaten Kerry and Galway away in championship.

I think that compares quite favourably with any previous squads.

I watched the galway game back and have to say that they threw it away in the first half to a level that is hard to fathom. If the roles were reversed and it was mayo that was guilty of what galway were in the game, they would be getting called bottlers and worse from every corner, and it would be hard to disagree.

While on the subject of galway, how many more games need to be totally dictacted by the wind in salthill before they do something about it? If it isnt fit for purpose at the height of summer, they should forget about it for intercounty games.

Also, this stuff with odonoghue on kelly is nonsense. Cant see the incident properly for a start. Was it just a light tap as a warning for something kelly was at 10 seconds earlier? Was it even on the ankle?

Personally, I think if you are that injured that a light contact could do that much damage then you shouldnt be playing, and his management team have let him down by selecting him. I recall c oconnor's dislocated shoulder in 2013. When he got back for the final, the first thing he got was an almightly belt of a shoulder from one of the dublin defenders. It was a ruthless hit. If his shoulder wasnt right it could have ended his days as a footballer. But he was on the pitch and if the guy next to him could be hit with it then why shouldnt he be hit with it also? I dont think you should expect people to treat you with kids gloves because you had an injury. If rod taps hernons ankle with his foot there is no furore, so why shouldnt he be able to do it for kelly? If he isnt fit take him off.

Joyce shows absolutely zero duty of care towards his players.

His whinge after the match was another low point for him.

    An egotistical moan.

What did he say? Only interview I saw he seemed to be taking it on the chin and acknowledging it was their own fault

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,851 ✭✭✭MfMan

There's a difference between a fair shoulder and a sly, calculated rake down on a players injured leg. What ROD did was mean and unworthy of him and hopefully out of character.

I've been at plenty of games in Castlebar which have also been dictated by the wind. Learning how to play, and score, into the elements is one of the fundamental challenges of playing GAA. Mayo had no difficulty in the opening 8 minutes yesterday with this aspect.

Watched the game back there, a few things I noted:

    - we got hands on 5 kickouts in the first half (at least 3, maybe 4 in the 2nd) that we lost, small margins

    - the ref did well when both teams were trying to waste time with "head injuries"

    - Galway were 7-3 up after 21 mins, only got 1 point for the rest of the half, brutal from their point of view

    - Diarmuid should have had a black in the first half, v lucky to get away with it

    - Eoghan Mc needs some 1-1 coaching, he's very poor at a lot of the basic techniques

    - we were 1-9 to 9 up in the 58th min, only got 1 more point (Carr in the 72nd min), poor enough

    - conceding the kickouts was a good strategy, not something we usually do but it worked

    - after we lost 3 kickouts in a row and Galway brought it back to 1 point, Hession came short for the kickout which ultimately lead to Carr's point, brilliant leadership from him

    - Paddy Durcan was motm for me, he was phenomenal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,392 ✭✭✭HBC08

Kelly wasn't fit to play and it showed,Joyce has done this continually down the years and its never worked with injured players.Plenty of examples of poor judgement by him (his whinging about the ref being another)

I don't know did Ryan try to go for kellys ankle and I dont care either way.Kill or be killed at this level,we've been on the receiving end enough times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,851 ✭✭✭MfMan

Fair enough, don't gripe so when you are on the receiving end of it again. Donal Vaughan exacting retribution arguably cost ye the AI final in 2017.

Who has Joyce picked before that was injured?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,392 ✭✭✭HBC08

I don't watch all that many galway games but Comer v Tyrone this year and Comer off the bench v Mayo in 2020 Connaught final when he was so fcuked he was out of breath by the time he ran into position.

Leaving Walsh on v Mayo in 2021 Connaught final in Croker (after Walsh had decided to instigate a tussle with O Hora and came off second best to say the least)

Leaving Kelly on the last day versus Armagh when he was in serious trouble.Starting Kelly against Mayo, playing Comer against Mayo,I could probably go on.

Do you watch a lot of football?

this is the mayo thread and there is a quarter final in 5 days, why are you discussing another county managers selections over the last 3 years. You are usually the first person to moan about this sort of stuff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,707 ✭✭✭Blackjack

He was clearly responding to another poster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,851 ✭✭✭MfMan

Walsh was replaced that day in Croker, as was Sean Kelly in Carrick, as soon as was practicable. Comer was replaced at ht last Sunday, as he reported in the dressing room that his hamstring was tightening up. Kelly, he just had to play, such is his influence.

If you don't watch all that many Galway games then how can you claim what Joyce's selection policy is with injured players?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,529 ✭✭✭finisklin

McBrien's goal was well taken and a great strong run for the 1-2. Kelly and Daly were caught here. Not sure if Kelly injury was a reason.

That goal is up there for goal of the year alongside McLaughlin's aganst Kerry.

I was at the match and have not watched it back yet. Eoghan McLaughlin seemed to score a cracker of a goal, but it was ruled out. I couldn't see it properly - it was down the far side from us. Was it ruled out for over-carrying?

Got sorted for ticket yesterday. But I just see that none available on ticketmaster now. I'm sure there will be a big crowd there, but I presume it is ticketmaster playing little tricks again, to build hype.

Was off yesterday so hoovered up a lot of podcasts. The Stephen O’Meara one is very good on tactics, put a lot of the good stuff down to Kevin McL, his ability to find pockets of space and draw in extra players.

Some serious balls shown by the management team, the bit the bullet on Loftus, not an easy thing to do when hes played all but one game this year at 6. The also dropped a massive name in Ruane, to me it looked like he was fairly petulant on the sideline as a result, McHale was down at one stage coaxing him. He didn’t exactly make a strong case for inclusion when he came on. Having said that I’m not sure Croke park or the dubs will suit Kevin McL or Jason Doc.

I was happy enough at half time, thought we were very patient with the ball, ran down the clock well, three awful misses kinda counteracted Galways misses. I felt we should have kicked on when three points up but watching it back you get more of a sense that Galway are a good team and we contained them to a large extend. The end of game management was brilliant, I know the crowd were going daft when we were going backwards but we were ahead, Galway had to do something. We put ourselves under pressure by Eoghan McLaughlin coughing up a turnover when he should have moved the ball. The last score we had came from 2 minutes of keep ball and then moving it when Galway got sloppy. It was brilliant to see.

Paddy Durcan would have been my MOTM, he was fantastic, the speed he went after Tierney in the first half stopped a goal, even the skill to not dive in and just put on the pressure was unreal to see. Coen, Diarmuid, Conroy, Flynn and McBrien were all excellent as well. Even though Reape got cleaned out at kickouts, and I don’t think he was helped, he didn’t lose the head, he had three go to Galway before chipping that one out to Hession on 69 minutes, great composure. Think Carney will be lucky to keep his spot, he was fairly anonymous yesterday, similar to the Louth game, I suppose you have to remember hes a novice, all these games will add to his experience but I’d be starting someone else the next day

Hard to know where the dubs are, one Div 1 opponent all year but they are still the dubs. 50-50 really, we have so many weaknesses, glaring weaknesses but I don’t think theres a team left that could have put in the 20 minutes we put in after HT on Sunday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,905 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Put the head down and barged into the galway lad. So it was either that or steps, both valid enough IMO. The lack of footballing skill in McLaughlin is astounding, how can you make it this far and be so bad at the basics. Could easily have been sent off for repeated fouling or leading the head at one stage. But he is some athlete

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,847 ✭✭✭Sebastian Dangerfield

I got a link from my club here in Dublin which was noted as having a seperate allocation from the main sale, and there are loads there all over the ground. Lots more to be released during the week for sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,457 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Darragh Maloney & Eamon Fitz thought it was overcarrying but I saw it as being blown (correctly) for barging

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,392 ✭✭✭HBC08

"Kelly,he just had to play, such is his influence "

You're making my point for me.PJ has repeatedly played injured players, the fact that are are key players doesn't change that.Mayo would like to have played Cillian for the last 18 months but he was injured, you do understand this concept yes?

Walsh wasn't taken off as soon as possible in the Connaught final in 2021.He made an ill judged attempt to start something with O Hora and got a very bad injury out of it.This was in the first half,he was given and injection at ht and played a good bit of the 2nd half.

Maybe I watch more Galway football than you after all.

As has been mentioned this is the Mayo thread,I won't be responding to you on here again. If you like take it over to the main thread and you can embarrass yourself there instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,392 ✭✭✭HBC08

Could have been either,I dont think we can have any complaints either way.I only saw the replay on the day and counted 12 steps.

Eoghan tried to dummy one way and when that didn't work he didn't seem to have a plan B,it was a nice finish though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,645 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Didn't want to go all in on him straight after the match but he nearly cost us it at times. He gave away a very soft free and ran into 3 Galway players coughing up possession at a vital stage, all in the space of a few minutes.

To his credit though, he was in the right spot to cover for Reape late on.

I wouldn't have him finishing big games, he's too likely to be a liability. His strengths are there for all to see, but they're not on the footballing side of things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,134 ✭✭✭crusd

Kelly wasnt fit, but he was still one of their best performers

He gets himself into great positions though, do you just accept that he can't solo the ball?

The turnover towards the end put us under real pressure when we didn't need to be
