Think this game will be tight enough, we never seem to do well against packed defenses and Mickey Harte will have his homework done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,903 ✭✭✭HBC08

Might be tighter than people think.

Louth had no problem putting up a big score against Cork.

Mickey Harte is a wiley old fox, everybody expecting Louth to go very defensive and hit Mayo on the break.Mayo traditionally struggle against blankets in Machale Park (see Cavan,Tyrone, fermanagh,Derry,Galway,Roscommon ) in recent enough times.

I think if they try this Mayo will have planned for it and will win well. However a curveball like going man to man would upset and surprise Mayos plan and might keep Louth in the game longer but I'm expecting a Mayo win regardless.

I think this could be an interesting game.

    Changes to today's starting 15:

    (18) Jason Doherty replaces (10) Fionn McDonagh.

    (24) Padraig O’Hora replaces (5) Paddy Durcan.

    (22) Donnacha McHugh replaces (9) Diarmuid O’Connor.

Aiden Orme added to the Mayo 26 and will wear No. 9.

    Diarmuid a huge loss.

RTE saying he isn't injured, just being rested.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,152 ✭✭✭✭Cartman78

Jeez got a fright there....thought Joanne Cantwell said Diarmuid O'Connor had been "arrested" instead of "rested" 😂

Anyway, wear sunscreen and hydrate lads....looks sweltering in Castlebar 🔥

Paddy fully togged and in for the toss just like he was in Killarney.

I guess that means he'll come on at some stage

Coen to MF and Mchugh to HB?

Maybe Carney to move into MF but who goes to HF then

Good options off the bench if we're in trouble

I’ve literally no idea what you’re talking about

This is a tough game to watch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,152 ✭✭✭✭Cartman78

Making heavy weather of this 🫤

Actually doing reasonably ok against a blanket defense but some bad wides

Very difficult to play against these Louth tactics, especially on MacHale Park pitch and in this heat.Horrible to watch, hopefully Mayo can get a goal and pull away, terrible to see these tactics being rewarded in any way.

But all they'll be rewarded with is a moral victory against a Div 1 team.

No team playing that sort of defensive stuff will win anything.

    Some save from Reape 😬

Subs needed here asap to freshen things up...gone very sloppy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,152 ✭✭✭✭Cartman78

    Horrible game and performance.

But a win is a win I guess....and a badly needed one with Cork waiting in the longish grass maybe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,100 ✭✭✭Barlett

Well back down to Earth after the performance, still happy to cough up the last minute goal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 617 ✭✭✭franklyon

Well got the win, less said about everything else the better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 118 ✭✭Be-Jaysus

Not great, 6 points shy of the 20 point mark, but a win is a win.

Only good thing to come out of today's game was seeing the fraudulent 300k Mchale Park pitch being exposed to the nation on RTE 2.

Its an absolute disgrace that warrants an investigation, as to where and how the money was spent during the project.

Looks like lots of shortcuts were taken by either the contractor or the county board to enrich themselves further..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,903 ✭✭✭HBC08

Well it wouldn't be a moral victory it would be an actual victory.

Most teams in the country won't win Sam,half of them don't even play in it but if you're the likes of Louth you might come up the divisions, maybe get to a leinster final and claim the odd famous victory along the way.Thats about the best Louth can do so I understand why they do it.I just don't want to see it rewarded because it's so horrible to watch

Isn't head the head the first criteria if 2 teams are level on points in the group?

If so, even if Kerry win and Mayo lose versus Cork then Mayo top the table?

    I could be wrong

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,073 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

There would be 3 teams on 4 points then so it goes to points difference.

There’s a template there to play against us. Cillian would have been great to have today. And Diarmuid also to a lesser extent. Having the ability to take on long range points is what you need against those tactics

Twas sweltering, even up at the back of the stand. Let's just say not the pleasantest afternoon of my life all round...

Good to get a result but uninspiring to say the least. Don't think we took a single long range shot or put a single high ball in - just did the same thing repeatedly and it was easy enough to defend against for a team as well organised as Louth. Good thing they didn't get ahead or we could have been in trouble

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,367 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

I think someone predicted it here, that Louth would set up defensive and Mayo would struggle to break them down, with Mayo's superior fitness, bench and experience etc winning the day.

Well that's more or less what happened.

This team has a great chance of winning an All Ireland but I'm worried that they won't if they meet someone like Galway or Derry who play a very defensive game.

Why can't they figure it out, it's been going on for years ?

It reminded me of the home league game in 2015 in the H&C era against Tyrone where they couldn't get past the 45.

A win is a win and all that, and they will learn more from this than a 10 point hammering etc, but sort out getting past a blanket defense please.

I'd expect Cork to be more open next week so I'd expect a Mayo win, but they need to sort this stuff out.

If Cork have any sense, they saw the template today to beat this Mayo team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭MacDanger

I doubt Cork have the quality to beat Mayo playing that way but plenty of other teams left in the championship do, most obviously Derry & Galway and to a lesser extent Monaghan & Roscommon. It's harder to implement that gameplan in Croker but if you can, we seem to have no idea how to respond

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,367 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

But it's not a switch that can be turned on.

Louth have had Mickey Heart as coach for a good few years, it's no surprise that they have inched their way up the leagues and have the game plan like they had today, it's been worked on over time.

So if Cork don't already have a defensive ethos they can't just come up with one in a week.

But as the other poster said it's the likes of Galway and Derry that will be the problem, as they are already play defensively.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,907 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

Did the ref blow up on the dot of 5 minutes of injury time? I was sure there was more to come after Louth's last point...
